{coming Wednesday} As mentioned before, the Marvel series Im doing is less character themed, and more what might the characters wear in our universe. For Peggy I went with a WWII bomber jacket art design, because I love the idea of her wearing this around the base telling the boys what to do 😄 The lettering is based on some 1940s painted jackets I came across, and rather than have a traditional lady pin-up I added Captain America. From the Archives: This story by the great alpinist Kei Taniguchi first appeared in Alpinist 52, which was published just before she died from a fall in December 2015 while climbing in Japans Ishikari Mountains. In Being with the Mountain, Taniguchi writes, I dont like rushing to a destination, reaching the base of a peak in the shortest possible time and starting to climb right away. To me, that approach would be like walking into someones house with dirty shoes. (1) This is how, in 1992, an Everest summit picture taken with a disposable Fuji Quicksnap camera looked. As it is the only picture I have of my few minutes on the highest point of the planet, I‘m very happy about it - especially as it was taken and given as a present by the late Sonam Thsering Sherpa. After taking the sequence of photos of Sonam climbing to the summit of Everest (see my last post), the battery of my SLR camera was empty. Since 1992, I have tried another seven times to climb Everest without supplemental oxygen - never successfully. My last attempt was in spring 2017 when I had to turn back at 8,580 m because of wind, snowfall, and cold. (2) The second picture in the series was one of the last I took with my big camera - seconds before Sonam arrived - and it is of the summit tripod which was placed by a big French expedition just a few days prior. The photo shows both the strong wind we had and the reflectors on the tripod which were to be used for a laser-measurement of the height of Everest. . . . . . Alta is the birthplace of avalanche research and mitigation in the United States. Early snow studies from Monty Atwater, Ed LaChapelle, and the US Forest Service Snow Ranger program evolved into the Utah Avalanche Center we know today.
