I don’t believe in talent, here’s why: My story starts from My birth certificate... it didn’t have a father on it He was gone for 16 years He would send me drawings as a child and I was always excited to see the new ones. too young to understand at the time, but always wondered why he wasn’t around but his drawings were. I felt like it had something to do with me. So I did art to prove myself. I did art to bond with a man I looked up to but never knew. Age 13, This same need for approval put me on the ground beaten black n blue, as I was jumped into the gang life and started tattooing for the homies. (Art saved my life) High school rolls around and the school gathers up in the event room to acknowledge the 3 Artist winners that represent the high school in some competition. I was one of them. just won an award for my Art, but I didn’t go up on stage when they called my name. I didn’t feel like I was worthy and I definitely was too “hard” to go up on stage and pick up an award for school. My homies would have made fun of me. So I sunk into my seat, as they repeated my name on stage until they mentioned the next winner. I remember in that moment, looking over a couple rows of seats at my art teacher (whom was amazing) and she was looking at me with this look. “what the fuck are you doin Dax ? Go get that shit you’re my best student, you earned it.. “ But I just laughed, looked away, and then started conversing to some friends next to me to distract myself from what I felt inside. Shortly after that my father gets out of prison, and we meet up. him a drug addict, me a gang banger. we didn’t know what to do to bond, so I brought up the idea of Drawing with him. Within a few minutes something didn’t add up. None of his stuff looked nearly as skilled as the drawings he sent me all my life. I remember asking him what happened to his skills. And he told me that most of them were drawings he had drawn from others as gifts for me to go with his letters. That was the moment my whole reality was flipped upside down.
