As we mark the 48th anniversary of the commemoration of Marcos’ declaration of martial law, we, the youth of Anakbayan BC, Gabriela BC, and Sulong UBC, take the opportunity to reflect on our history, its similarities with the present, and the kind of future we want to see for all Filipinos. • As progressive Filipino youth engaged in the struggle for national democracy, we dedicate ourselves to the study and analysis of the conditions in the Philippines, and through educating ourselves about our history we recognize and identify the patterns that repeat themselves. Increased inflation, high rates of unemployment, and rising tuition fees led to heightened social unrest and a corresponding growth in the political consciousness and militant activity of youth in all sectors. • The early 1970s saw a proliferation of youth-driven uprisings and the intensification of student activism, culminating in watershed moments of political activity such as the First Quarter Storm (FQS) of 1970, a series of demonstrations, protests, and marches against the Marcos administration taking place from January to March 1970.
