ActionAid Mozambique is working with local partners to support 12,000 people in Cabo Delgado with essential supplies. They received food kits with rice, corn flour, oil and sugar as well as hygiene materials consisting of buckets with a tap and soap to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Karma climbed with Tenzing Norgay and Ed Hillary, his son climbed Everest in the 80s and his grandson @pemba_sharwa guides in the Himalaya. Karma’s family along with @panuru_sherpa donated the land for the building which serves as a community center, library and wellness post. It also has a climbing wall and gear room. Phil is a multi year volunteer instructor beginning in 2006 and is board member of the KCC. It takes $60 to feed 30 children a well nourished big plate of food for one day in Roatan. Roatan may very well be one of the friendliest places in the world. The common phrases “Buenas” or “Mornin” can be heard in the streets at every corner of the island from those living in Roatan and even from travelers. It’s common to be greeted by strangers in Roatan and to become accustomed to this. The culture of “ Buenas” makes Roatan one of the best places to travel and to live. The islanders have lived together biculturally in harmony. “Mornin’ “ is a greeting half of them say and “Buenos” from the other half depending on heritage. I think this is a wonderful practice and it’s not surprising if you consider the fact that Roatan is an interesting collection of different cultures. Though Roatan is not small the communities there are. This creates a level of comfort despite different cultures, colors and contradictions. Next time your traveling in your own area consider taking a lesson from the culture of Buenas and sharing a smile with a stranger or even a “Hello”. Though in western culture it is not common place to greet strangers; maybe embracing that friendlier side of ourselves will provide some comfort and help strengthen local communities during these difficult times. This month, I’m helping Community Town Federation (CTF), a women-led community organization of city-wide informal settlement (‘slum’) dwellers in Korail, Dhaka, reach their goal of $5k. Korail is the largest informal settlement in Bangladesh and is home to over 100,000 residents. These urban farmers and daily-wage earners fall among the millions of Bangladeshis who lost jobs and have no source of income due to COVID-19. Many of these women are coping with food insecurity by relying on their existing urban farming practices to feed and sustain themselves. De 6-jarige Khosi groeide op in onzekerheid. De onstabiele jeugd met veel verhuizingen en het verlies van zijn moeder, zorgde voor veel angst. Khosi’s oom, waar hij nu met zijn 4 broertjes en zusjes woont, is werkloos. In samenwerking met Mount Olive werd Khosi begin dit jaar aangemeld voor het Early Child Development programma, waardoor hij ingeschreven kon worden voor de basisschool. Ook krijgt Khosi dagelijks huiswerkbegeleiding en voedzame maaltijden. Door rouwbegeleiding lukt het Khosi om het verlies van zijn moeder een plekje te geven. Thanks for all the amazing feedback about my @nytimestravel Malawi photo essay. Lots of questions about how I behave around kids when I’m working - I suppose these will give you a bit of an idea of that. (Thankfully I have reason to stick to Malawi, which means you don’t need to watch my street dance-off with a group of kids aged 3-8 in Karamoja from a few years ago.) 🤣 Also, a lot of questions about things like consent. This is a tricky subject, not least because our understanding of what that means doesn’t necessarily translate that well. The sheer number of people we come across (especially kids, whom I often photograph for their pleasure more than my own), sometimes not knowing until years later if a photograph will be used for anything, makes having any kind of written consent from everyone who appears in any single picture impossible in practical terms, as does things like writing down names (although I do this whenever it is feasible, and certainly if I engage in a one-on-one conversation and then take portrait photographs of that person). Having said that, I - and most other photographers I know - don’t tend to photograph people (and kids in particular) without first having asked for permission, and I generally don’t enter a school or a village without a chaperone of sorts - a teacher, chief, parent, or project employee. I always want my visits to be appreciated, so the thought of causing discomfort or making anyone upset by my actions would certainly be more important than taking a particular photo, no matter how good I think it might be. We have to be human first, photographers second, and as always: be respectful. And if everyone assumes that the intentions of others are good - and let’s face it, they usually are - then most situations end up being very pleasant. (Also, vast majority of people I’ve come across on my travels absolutely love being photographed, so it really is a win-win if done in the right way.) Meet Vaida, Fatianca, and Querida 👋 These women are a few of the local farmers who have worked with us for many years planting coffee on Mount Gorongosa. Vaida (left) has been with us for ten years, first as a volunteer in the rainforest reforestation project and later helping to shape the #GorongosaCoffee initiative. From the start, she was clear that a reforestation initiative would only be successful if it also helped local farmers feed their families. The answer, it turns out, was coffee! Vaida was hired to run the coffee and native tree nursery at the top of Mount Gorongosas waterfall. Today, she works five days a week and is responsible for over 200,000 coffee seedlings and 20,000 rainforest trees. Welcome to the Kuzamura Ubuzima farm: an area of existing regenerative and biointensive agriculture that is regularly utilized to feed hospitalized women and children, and the local community. HU’s Food Forest Project aims to support and expand this vital undertaking, especially considering the climbing malnutrition rates that disproportionately affect children and uneducated mothers at a shocking 40% in the rural Huye District of Rwanda. Rwandan hospitals often do not provide food to patients, leading to prolonged hospitalizations due to the inability to effectively heal from illness. This malnutrition cannot go unchecked, as it can be linked to stunted brain development, immuno-compromization, and long-term health complications. The United Nations estimated 144 million children younger than five-years-old were affected by stunting last year. “My baby Bridget is four months old. I started this business three years ago. Its not a great business. Theres so much hard work. You have to cut the trees. They can easily fall on you, so there are many injuries. There are also a lot of snakes and scorpions out in the bush. So, when you do this you have to be very careful. The area where I work is about an hour away. We cut the wood there and also burn it at the same place. I am blind on eye and cannot see much from the other, so that makes it harder. I always need someone to help me. It takes about two weeks to make one bag of charcoal. I can sell a bag for 20K shillings ($5.40). Right now, I have three bags. I know this business may cause problems. If you cut trees, you need to replant also. There are so many problems caused from cutting trees. Trees provide wind breaks for our homes; without them the wind becomes too much. Land that doesnt have trees may also experience erosion and the topsoil can wash away. Eventually our land is becoming infertile. With no leaves to fall, there is no compost being made. Weve had many challenges in the last three years. The rain has not been reliable and were all farmers. But if you want to eat, you need to do something. Without this work, I dont have an income and I cant support my family. I would like to leave this business. Its difficult, since I always need help to do it. I would prefer to do something else. I’d like to get a grinding machine. My problem is capital. I dont have money to start the business. I also need money to go to Kampala to get an operation. They say my eyesight can be fixed.” Geoffrey, 20 years old. Through AWR’s Microfinance and Savings program we are helping people start businesses that are safe for both people and the environment. The most humbling and heartwarming experience. I am a wife and a mother of 8 children. My mother, who is in her 80’s also lives with us and she is sickly. I also take care of Karanja, James and Alex who I have raised since they were very young boys. We all live here on this small piece of land that we were given by the government. Three of my children managed to finish high school and have moved out, two were not able to finish primary school because of limited finances, while the others are still ongoing with school. I live with most of my children here at home, and we have been trying to get them jobs so they can be independent. . The greatest kindness I have received has been from Flying Kites. They have educated Karanja, James and Alex, and my son, Maara, who was in Flying Kites Academy. For this I am truly grateful. . The biggest challenge I have felt is that I am not able to raise these children as I would have wished to, especially with the limitation of resources. I also cannot quite say I have yet experienced a day where I was truly happy. It is also really difficult for me to see that I am not in a position to help myself, let alone the children. Oftentimes, I receive help from my neighbors, they give me food, lately they have also supported me financially by paying for my medical bills as I have been sickly. My joints are in pain, I also get dizzy. The doctors are yet to find out what is happening to me. . It is really tough for me because I know I am financially unstable. It is no surprise that this year’s World Environmental Health day, marked every 26th of September, is about public health. Certainly, the current global pandemic has brought forth the extent to which we are all connected, existing in an intricate ecosystem, where the health of one component - from climate, to habitat, to plant and wildlife - impacts the other. More than ever, this year has zeroed in on the significant role that conserving biodiversity plays in human health. ... Beyond the obvious benefits (food security, safe water, clean air, ecotourism etc) scientists are now finding that a healthy environment may be a key factor in avoiding future pandemics! How? For starters, the less the encroachment into natural habitats, the less the risk of transmitting disease between species. (PS. the transmission mechanisms of the corona-virus is not yet certain, but research indicates that it is a zoonotic disease.) The bottom line is that ecological instability impacts the resilience of every species. …… Yet, nature is declining and species facing extinction. For example, the size of wildlife population has decreased by two-thirds since 1970. Intact forest land decreased by 7 percent from the year 2000 to 2013. That’s the equivalent of 36,000 football fields every day for 13 years! How does such erosion impact human wellbeing? The answer is immensely. ... Communities and their sustainability is a catalyst to conservation. And vice versa. This is the Lewa model. 17 community water projects, giving over 2000 people access to clean water. 400 small scale farmers trained on sustainable agriculture in the past 6 years. Tree nurseries that produce 6000 tree seedlings per year, regenerating forest cover for both human and wildlife habitats. Over 4000 students visiting the Lewa conservation education center every year for environmental awareness. And in keeping with the theme of the day, health clinics that attend to over 50,000 people in a year! There’s more, but you get the idea, right? MAHASALAMA As mãos trêmulas seguravam um pequeno saco plástico vazio. Ela havia comprado uma mistura de farinha de milho fortificadora, em cuja embalagem se lia mahasalama. Muito saudável. Não resta dúvidas: a mãe vinha tentando fazer tudo que estava ao seu alcance. A despeito de suas tentativas, ela nos trazia o filho de 20 anos carregado em uma carriola de madeira, pesando 21kg, com seu fígado crescido e sem funcionar, além de muita falta de ar. Recebi-os com imenso aperto no coração: uma família que me é tão cara... e ei-os aqui, diante do diagnóstico de uma doença que seguirá seu curso sem que qualquer intervenção seja capaz de reverte-la. Mais uma vez, não será possível curar. Mas sempre será possivel cuidar! Mas esse cuidado paliativo trouxe algo diferente. Gosto de cuidar de pessoas no final de suas vidas. Mas dessa vez, me vi diante da necessidade de cuidar de alguém que beira o final da vida porque não teve acesso a água e saneamento. Porque morou em condições que favoreciam a transmissão de doenças. Que não pode comer adequadamente porque sua família não tinha nem mesmo o necessário. Que não pode se cuidar melhor porque, mesmo tendo uma mãe extremamente trabalhadora, ela nunca teve acesso a uma renda fixa. Foi com esses pensamentos, sentada por longos momentos em silêncio ao lado da mãe, que meus olhos alcançaram suas mãos: ainda assim ela tinha dado um jeito de comprar a farinha mahasalama. Respirei fundo. Pedi a Deus para que não me faltasse a compaixão necessária. Sorri. Não há deserto no qual não encontremos vida. Ela abriu um grande sorriso e me abraçou: família. Concordei: família. Oramos juntas, pedindo amparo e discernimento para os próximos passos: resignação para aceitar o que não podemos mudar e coragem para mudarmos o que é possível. Escrevi esse post ha um ano em razão do #Setembroamarelo : nosso mocinho amado nos mostrou que não há sofrimento que não possa ser cuidado! Photo by @eva.colomer As we were driving to the north east of Uganda, in the Karamojong area, we happened to stop at a little group of houses by the bumpy road. After negociating with the local chief who was dressed in the most bizarre attaire possible ( a sort of military jacket and matching cap) , we agreed to camp next to the houses. The curiosity was mutual, obviously. Slowly, slowly came the children, then some older boys and some women, too. They were as fascinated by our “houses” which were ready in 10 minutes, as we were by their looks. Amazing experience. The next morning, just as I peeped out of my tend, I caught them standing there, as if they had been waiting for me all night. The Karamojong or Karimojong are a Nilotic ethnic group. They are agro-pastoral herders living mainly in the north-east of Uganda. Their language is also known as Karamojong or Karimojong and is part of the Nilotic language family. The main livelihood activity of the Karamojong is herding livestock, which has social and cultural importance. Crop cultivation is a secondary activity, undertaken only in areas where it is practicable. Due to the arid climate of the region, the Karamojong have always practised a sort of pastoral transhumance, where for 3–4 months in a year, they move their livestock to the neighboring districts in search of water and pasture for their animals. A rescue in progress... Yesterday, AKTF and MC Rangers (Ololoolo gate) went out for a patrol at Nyakweri forest. Along the way, they saw a stranded and exhausted baby Eland- about 2 days old. She was searching for her mother, unfortunately the mother was far away since Elands has a tendency of hiding their calves in a safe place, and only returns in the evening for feeding (nursing) until the calf is able to run on its own. The Team managed to get hold of the calf and tried to locate the mother, to no luck. Fortunately, one of the community members; Mrs Lankas was of great help. She warmly accepted to take care of the baby Eland for a night in her boma, while the team continues the search of the mother. Currently the main hindrance to a beautiful co-existence between Human and wildlife is compounded by electric fences erected which are blocking many wildlife corridors. We are looking forward to a successful complete rescue and happy reunion! Back in April, we launched the Angaza Project, Kakenyas Dreams emergency response to the COVID-19 crisis. Through the Angaza Project, we deliver care packages containing vital supplies including food, feminine hygiene products, study materials, and solar lights and radios for distance learning to each of our students households. In May, we distributed the first round of care packages to our girls and their families. Another round of care packages was distributed in July, and our third round of distributions is happening now! The floods and muslide in Chesegon, West Pokot County in Kenya have had devastating effects. The community has lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The mudslide has left the community without water, and in unsanitary conditions heightening the communitys vulnerability to COVID-19.We, therefore, gave water cans and handwashing stations. Alongside the cans, we also gave water treatment chemicals to protect from water borne diseases. Women and adolescent girls have special needs that are often hard to meet during a crisis. @karmagawa ・・・ Please share this post about the Senkwekwe Center, the only mountain gorilla orphanage in the world, with your followers because these hardworking caregivers live 24/7 with the orphans, offering them a level of care unprecedented in the gorilla world! These gorillas are most often the victims of poaching incidents where poachers have killed their mother in order to steal the baby #gorilla to try to sell it. The Rangers of Virunga National Park have done an amazing job to counter this but occasionally it still happens. It has proven very difficult to rewild these traumatized gorillas so as a result, they need a place to live and people to care deeply for them. Nobody does that better than the caregivers at Senkwekwe, the orphanage named after a devoted Silverback male who died trying to protect his family.
