As art spaces around the world begin to re-open their doors, were delighted to collaborate with our neighbouring East End galleries for the September edition of First Thursdays. This September we partnered with @veloroselondon, @offshootgallery and @studio1.1_london, who have each announced an exciting and timely assembly of photography, painting and video works – both online and on-site. . Between dance, film and photography, Velorose presents the FUBUNATION collective which investigates the personal struggles of power and emotion, and strikes a balance between conflict, vulnerability and co-dependency. Sharing works from the Ruins series, the group emphasise the social, rather than political, issues of what may be identified as a universal ‘black male experience’ . Offshoot Gallery present Splinters & Swimmers, a solo exhibition with new paintings by Araminta Blue. This new body of work considers the role of imagined natural spaces as both means of idealised escape from our reality, and as a reflection of our paradoxical relationship with nature: how we connect with it, attempt to control it and damage it. . In ‘normal’ times, the annual members’ shows, This Year’s Model, at Studio 1.1 take place at the start of the year. This time around they were separated, the first taking place in January, and the second deferred post-lockdown. As their artists and curatorial team returned to the gallery in late July, they aimed to pick up where they left off, showing a wide array of work that has inevitably been influenced by these interesting times. . Gerewol festival in Chad It’s time for wodaabe tribes to gather in the region of Durbali in Chad. A year ago, I was about to leave Chad after 6 years living in this incredible country. But, a few days before leaving, I was offered to go and see this festival. It was such a great experience ! Now, I live in Niger and my wish is to go and see the Cure Salée. This festival must be different from the ones held in Chad. It is an official festival and it is supposed to be a lot bigger than the one in Chad. Nevertheless, Cure Salée won’t be held this year. The pandemic and the severe floodings resulted in it being cancelled by the Government. #EOGConservation: The photo was shot at Senkwekwe orphanage in DRCs Virunga national park - the only one of its kind in the world. The work that André Bauma (pictured) and his colleagues do in this, Africas oldest park, is some of the most important and (sadly) least publicised conservation work on this planet. Some of the gorillas are victims of poaching, others were orphaned when their mothers were deliberately murdered by rebel forces. Either way the goal is to return them to the wild where rangers protect 60% of the worlds remaining mountain gorillas - just 600 animals - living in Virunga. Despite its environmental riches the political instability in DRC understandably deters many would-be tourists, ironically depriving the park of the very income it needs to survive. A few months ago @thiagocavalli from @casadorio_ introduce me to Parque das Tribos, a community in Manaus that houses more than 700 families of 35 indigenous ethnic groups in the Amazon. A peripheral region of the capital, invisible, sad village, with indigenous people in very precarious living conditions, far from the forest, on the edge of the city. It was an invitation from leader @vanda_ortega, a brave girl with courage in her eyes. During these difficult days, Thiago learned about the needs of the Parque das Tribos, and offered help from @casadorio_ to the community, taking 700 hygiene kits and materials for making 1000 masks there, with resources that the NGO collected with the project. # VogueSolidária created by @ danielafalcao1 and with the support of old friends and partners. We are so proud and excited to be a partner and seen so many great things evolving 🙏🏻Working with nearby villages is a part of the work Thiago and his Casa do Rio do ,which has become a hub of solidarity and affection to embrace native people living along the rivers and traditional people who may be the most affected at this time . Varias empresas y grupos voluntarios comprometidos con el ambiente participaron en la limpieza; entre ellas @telecablecr @sykescostarica @amazon @clubdeleones @onehandcr @rios_puravida @ecosunrise Se logró recolectar 1 tonelada de residuos, mayormente micro plásticos y llantas. 💚🏝️ Esta playa está cerca de la desembocadura del río tarcoles que trae todos residuos que son tirados inadecuadamente desde la GAM. Entre los que podemos mencionar están mayormente pajillas, removedores de café, cepillos de dientes, muchísimos zapatos, jeringas y muchísimos encendedores. I’ve been intentionally quiet on social media for the past few weeks. Covid, the amount of deaths, and it’s chilling ripple effects on so many lives...this years Mothers day was really hard on me...but THIS. THIS is not something to stay silent on. Our nation is burning in the ashes of pain from our black community, and silence is not an option. If you are not fueled with anger and pierced with hurt at this point, you are not paying attention. Whats been set into motion is not from the protesters, looters, rioters..whats set this into motion is decades after decades of mistreatment, violence, death, and hate towards the black community. This is the only possible reaction when a community is sickened with racism. I am not for violence, but peaceful protests have brought no justice. The fear many feel from the riots happening down their street and in their neighborhood, is the same fear every single black person feels every single day. As an Asian American I am still so, so privileged and I will never be able to have my well deep enough to fully comprehend the amount of aching pain our black community has faced and is facing today. NO MORE. The fight against racism, inequality and injustice is not a fight for the black community alone. Secara geografi kami berada di antar beberapa kabupaten dan berbatasan langsung dengan 1 Negara. Di utara berbatasan dengan Kabupaten Kerom,selatan berbatasan dengan Kabupaten Boven Digoel, sebelah timur berbatasan dengan Negara tetangga Papua New Guinea (PNG) dan sebelah Barat berbatasan dengan Kabupaten Yahukimo. Dalam foto ini kami menggunakan baju adat kami yaitu : 1. aksesori yang dipake laki-laki ini di kepala adalah kulep abol adalah makota kepala dari buluh burung yang di anggap sakral, aksesoris di leher disebut Dilmonim (kalung dari siwol okaum atau dalam bahasa indonesia uang tradisional yang di gunakan sebagai alat transaksi pada zaman dlu), di bagian lengan disebut Yafet Tiki (gelang yang terbuat dari anyaman tali), yang dipegang di tangan adalah Ebon dan silmon (merupakan senjata dari suku ngalum) dan yang terakir adalah aksesoris pakaian khusus laki okbul marmisol yang dibuat dari moncong burung taon-taon (koteka). 2. Aksesoris yang di kenakan di kepala adalah Mendip (Noken yg dalam bahasa indonesia adalah tas), aksesoris pada leher disebut dimonim kalung dari kang ningil (taring babi) suk (kulit bia) dan yang terakir adalah Unom (Cawat atau pakaian khusus perempuan) Seiring perkembangan zaman Kepercayaan akan suatu kebudayaan dan nilai-nilai kebudayaan semakin hilang dengan adanya budaya-budaya luar atau yang sering disebut westernisasi. For their new year in June, called Kael, Bodi men consume large amounts of blood and milk to become overweight; This tradition measures the body fat of a contestant; Each family or clan is allowed to present an unmarried contestant; The winner of this contest is awarded great fame by the tribe; The women in the tribe wear goatskin skirts and have a plug inserted into their chin; Most of them are now Christians. So powerful! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Maasai have always been calm and courageous. They were formerly hunters, with their young men trained to hunt for food and to protect their families. In fact, until recently, a Maasai boy would only be crowned a warrior if they killed a lion single-handedly using a spear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗗 ❱ This has probably been one of the most intriguing factS about the Maasai people. As strange as it may sound to some, the Maasai do in fact drink the raw blood of the cows and goats that they slaughter, which is their primary source of food. Since then, the Jamaican Iguana Recovery Group has been helping the Critically Endangered lizards. Hatchlings born in the Hellshire Hills are brought to the Hope Zoo. The iguanas, no bigger than a pinky finger, spend five to six years in the head start program at the Hope Zoo and when they are big enough to defend themselves from invasive predators, like the Indian Mongoose, they are released to the wild. Today is World Rhino Day🦏 ~~~ Thank YOU for making a difference, for helping to keep critically endangered rhinos alive, and for helping us to empower local communities that surround key wildlife preserves in South Africa.🌍 ~~~ Together with our conservation partners in South Africa @stoprhinopoaching , @chipembere_rhino_foundation , @africa_found , @simonjamesnaylor , Laguna Beach APU, and our supporters and donors, we have been able to fund the following rhino conservation and community empowerment initiatives over this past year: 🌟6 month Conservation, Research and Skills Development Training Program for 5 students from local communities surrounding Mun-Ya-Wena Wildlife Conservancy in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, one of the key black rhino conservancies in the world. Candidates are being finalized and the course starts Oct 1st, 2020. 🌟Contribution towards purchase of a High Definition Radar for SRP Operational Unit. Radar is the only form of technology currently in use that detects, tracks and provides real-time actionable intelligence to friendly forces to gain the advantage and increase the success rate of anti-poaching reactions. 🌟3-day basic legal training courses for 130 Anti-Poaching Unit Supervisors and Rangers 🌟Dehorning of 4 rhinos on Mun-Ya-Wena Wildlife Conservancy, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.
