- Sea Turtle missing about a fifth of its body, still alive, dragging its intestines. Most like due to a shark attack.
Before, the survival rate of the sea turtles in Palawan was very low. Once the eggs are lain on the beach, dogs would play with them out of curiosity, or the locals would eat them. Turtle eggs were sold for 5 pesos a piece! . In the last 3 years, a group of locals in the area have been incubating, hatching and releasing the turtles back to sea. They’ve started from hatching/releasing 250 turtles from the 1st year, 2000 the next and this year, they’re at 5000! Georgia’s sea turtle nesting season, which began in May and ended in July, was healthy for continued population recovery of the enormous creatures. From Cumberland Island to Tybee Island, loggerheads laid roughly 2,800 nests. The count was not as high as last year’s 3,650 nests, but it was still in line with the recovery goal for the state. The turtles are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, and achieving nesting goals will help the species be removed from the list. Most sea turtle species primarily nest at night. Youd be lucky to catch a sea turtle nesting at sunrise and sunset. But olive ridley sea turtles also nest during the daytime and are less likely to be disturbed during their nesting process, making them easier for biologists to study and for visitors to witness and learn from with less stress on the animal. The most important thing to consider is to keep your distance and stay behind the turtle and out of their line of sight. DId you know a sea turtle’s sex is temperature dependent? If a turtle’s eggs incubate below around 82 degrees Fahrenheit, the hatchlings will be male. Above 88 degrees Fahrenheit, the hatchlings will be female. Temperatures between the two extremes will produce a mix of male and female baby turtles. As climate change leads to increased temperatures, this could result in a higher ratio of female turtles, which would impact turtle species. The sexes of other reptiles, like alligators and crocodiles, are also temperature dependent and face similar threats from a warming world. - @noaaocean on Instagram

This gorgeous creature arrived on an @airnz flight this morning, after having been found washed ashore in the Bay of Islands in a very weak state. . Sadly, sea turtles face a myriad of threats in the ocean that can leave them sick and fighting for their lives. The reason this particular turtle has washed ashore in this state is unknown. Tonight we had our first Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nest Hatch in Broward County. Our staff rescued 96 loggerhead sea turtles that disoriented to artificial lights. They were blessed with names and released to swim wild and free. Only 5 found their way to the ocean on their own. 😐 Greater enforcement is needed! As per City of Fort Lauderdale, “A common threat to sea turtles is disorientation caused by other sources of light. The City of Fort Lauderdale has adopted Chapter 6, Article III. - Sea Turtles in its Code of Ordinances to help protect threatened and endangered sea turtles that nest and hatch on the beach. David (@theiobot) & I got woken up at 2:30am by screams outside our beach villa. David went out to confronted the ladies who were on our deck and got a simple loud reply of “turtles!” 😳 About 50 had hatched near by and started to make their way towards the hotel lights vs the ocean in the opposite direction 150 yards away. They were going onto the patios, under the villa, into the parking lot and into the bushes. The hotel lights disoriented them & they were going into the wrong direction uphill into unsafe areas. We all decided to gently pick them up and put them into a bag to carry them towards the water and release them by the ocean. As we are doing so a guy with a red headlamp shows up, a bucket & a stick and demands we set them free in front of him.😠 He seemed to want to poach them for himself. We ended up releasing every single turtle into the water before this guy got a single one. Hopefully we did some good and saved these little guys from death due to disorientation or this guy with stick. Im sure if the hotels weren’t here they would have been ok but mother nature has changed for them and a little help and redirection was a must to save them from uncertainty. - @laurendrainfit on Instagram

Had warm fuzzies walking out on the beach in the mornings and seeing all of the nesting tracks, knowing I’ve just missed a mama returning to the water after a long night for her. I’ve taken to stalking nests to see if they have hatched. Hoping for that one chance to capture them emerging from a nest to photograph. I’ve come close by seeing all the tiny tracks leaving a nest but not a single one left nearby. Because of your continued support, we were able to release Brody and Terra back into the wild this morning! Brody, an adult male loggerhead, arrived at our Center at the end of March after becoming entangled in fishing line and experiencing a buoyancy disorder. Fortunately, our rehabilitation staff was able to heal Brody and return him to the wild. Terra, named in honor of our Earth Day contest, arrived at our Center covered in epibiota and in poor overall health due to chronic debilitation. After removing the epibiota and treating the subadult loggerhead with betadine, honey, and therapeutic laser, Terras health began to improve and was deemed healthy for release. El acto ha contado además con la presencia, entre otros, de la delegada del Gobierno andaluz en Cádiz, Ana Mestre, la subdelegada del Gobierno en el Campo de Gibraltar, Eva Pajares, y el director gerente de la Agencia Andaluza de Medio Ambiente y Agua, Javier de Torre. La consejera ha felicitado a los responsables del cuidado de las dos especies durante este tiempo, resaltando la importancia de su labor y el incremento en la recuperación de este tipo de ejemplares a lo largo de los últimos años. Why do Sea Turtles need our help? For thousands of years humans have harvested sea turtles around the world. In Florida the early original Floridians particularly loved not only turtle meat but their shells for utility and art. During the egg laying months harvesting the nests found on the beach provided a particularly special delicacy for the minimal human inhabitants of Florida up to the turn of the century. As human populations grew in Florida and around the world sea turtle populations were obliterated almost to the point of extinction due to over fishing and egg harvesting. It wasn’t till the 1960’s and 70’s that protection was finally enacted and through conservation and intervention efforts the sea turtles started to see a return to many of Florida’s beaches. While in much of the world sea turtle harvesting still occurs illegally and unmonitored, Florida waters and beaches have begun to see the return and continued increases of nesting activities thanks to education, awareness, and changes in human behavior. Proof that we can make a difference! But new challenges have come into play. The new dilemma is how to deal with the unintended consequences of our population growth. By-catch by commercial fishing, pollution of waters with solids and chemical run off, boat strikes, over development of water front habitat, and global temperature increases are the new culprits that threaten not only sea turtles but thousands of other species. Here are a few ways you can help! 1. Turn Out Lights Visible From the Beach: Sea turtle hatchlings use light and reflections from the moon to find their way to the water at night. 2. Clean Up Trash You See in The Environment: Sea turtles can become tangled in plastic and trash both on the shore and in the water. 3. Avoid Nesting Areas and Hatching Turtles: Make sure to give nesting areas plenty of space. 4. Reduce the Amount of Chemicals You Use: The chemicals you use on your lawn and in your home can actually wash into the coastal waters – killing plants and animals. 5. Volunteer! El Centro de Conservación de Manatíes del Caribe en la Universidad Interamericana recibió el pasado domingo una tortuga marina con una herida en su cabeza. La tortuga de especie peje blanco (Chelonia mydas) y de tan solo 6 libras de peso, fue rescatada por el Cuerpo de Vigilantes del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales en la playa Las Criollas del pueblo de Barceloneta, quienes la transportaron expeditamente al centro veterinario localizado en el Recinto de Bayamón de la Inter. La tortuga juvenil con un trauma intracraneano producto de lo que parece ser un traumatismo penetrante en el cráneo, actualmente presenta un compromiso del globo ocular y la glándula de sal. El día de ayer se realizó una radiografía la cual no nos mostró con claridad la penetracion de la lesión, motivo por el cual el día de hoy se realizó un CT scan para poder evaluar la verdadera condición del animal y si había más compromiso de órganos, la interpretación inicial parece que no hay compromiso del encéfalo sin embargo estamos en espera de la opinón de un especialista en imagenologia veterinaria. Por lo pronto se ha mantenido un poco débil aunque letárgica, ha recibido tratamiento de termoterapia, terapia tópica, antibióticos, fluidos y analgesia. Esta paciente se encuentra en cuidado crítico. Estamos en espera de evolución para poder dar un diagnóstico. Barb was tagged this passed weekend. She is the most popular turtle in the Argostoli Harbour. She’s often on postcards around town and has a social media following. Barb can be easily recognized by her healing propeller strike wound to her carapace. This propeller strike is easily over 8 years old and will continue to heal as the new keratin forms underneath and the old scutes slowly peel away. - @wildlifesense on Instagram

Meet our newest patient, Elvin! At 7:30 p.m. last night, the Sea Turtle Care Center team received a call from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources about a stranded juvenile green sea turtle on James Island unable to dive. Elvin was transported to the Care Center where he was triaged by our vet staff. Hes completed the first step in his journey home, rescue, and is now resting as he starts the rehabilitation process. Remember Elvin? Elvin was found stranded and in need of medical attention on James Island by two helpful citizens, Kimberly and her son Sebastian. Our Sea Turtle Care Center team asked Sebastian what hed name this little green sea turtle, and he chose Elvin after his imaginary cat. ⠀ ⠀ Like Elvin, little Sebastian is embarking on his own hopeful journey to recovery, as he was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Its Turtle Turtle Tuesday 🐢 If you ever get the chance to witness this natural event you will be so amazed by seeing them run down to the water trying to make it to safety, at least from the predators on land. Then they have to deal with the predators of the big blue ocean. Theyre survival rate is so small, 1 only 1 out of 1,000 will make it to adult hood. That is crazy. Thats why its so important to keep our beaches and oceans clean and healthy. Not only for the turtles, but for all marine life! If you do get to see make that mad dash to the ocean, please, please, dont interfere. Let nature take its course. (Well scare off any birds you see) Just dont touch or pick them up. These little guys could smell the ocean, when they got closer. They ran even faster. Good luck little guys!!
