Hi all, @holdtheframe here. I’m excited to host the CS account for the next week. This community has been an invaluable resource for me and I hope my posts are useful to others. Here we go. First up, I’d like to talk about The Sound of Silence, a feature I shot, directed by @michaeltyburski . It premiered at Sundance 2019 and was released by IFC Films and is streaming these days. Peter Lucian (played by Peter Sarsgaard) is a successful house tuner in New York City, who calibrates the sound in peoples homes in order to adjust their moods. He meets a client, Ellen (played by Rashida Jones), with a problem he cant solve. I’ve hopped around many genres in my work but my approach to conceptualizing the look of each film always begins with character and story. How can I use my tools to portray the character’s emotional journey? In our initial meetings in prep, the director and I dig into the subtext and psychology of the characters and I let those ideas inform our visuals. I try to do this before we even start scouting so that these core ideas guide what we think we want in our locations. The film is about Peter’s obsession with the invisible forces that influence us. To draw out how that obsession has isolated him emotionally, and how it imposes a rigidity on his life, I shot early sequences in the film without much camera movement and wide-open on Zeiss Super Speeds for a super shallow depth of field. Of course, the visuals of this film had to support the sound elements and the act of listening, which is central to the film’s story. We found that by limiting the bandwidth of visual information further, with very low exposure levels and by designing a LUT that pulled everything into a very limited color palette (with the mighty @romanhankewycz ), we were able to enhance the audience’s act of listening. In the last episode (season 1) of this audio drama, I have to recreate gong music from East Nusa Tenggara. Actually I can not do that, but I cheat. I watch several times the video of maekat dance, from central Amanuban. Through the body movement, I have an idea how to play the gongs. I saw a spaceship last night! Zipping by at over 17,000mph, the ISS is the most incredible feat of engineering created by humans, and pretty much anyone can see it. No need to travel, itll come to you! I downloaded an ISS tracker app (there are many and they all work well) so I could get alerts when this thing is overhead. During the pass, the ISS shows up as a bright star steadily moving overhead. Theres nothing quite like it in the sky. If you have a dobsonian telescope like mine, you can position it just ahead of where the station is moving, and catch it in the eyepiece as it zips by. Seeing the panels and radiators in real time is breathtaking. To get these shots, I put a high framerate camera in the eyepiece of my scope, and manually tracked the station while recording frames. And this is how we must learn to love; without expectation or attachment. To understand we cannot force people to come into our lives, or stay in our lives, simply because we want them there. There is nothing forceful about love; we cannot demand it, manipulate it, control it, coerce it into being. Indecision is still a decision; if we must convince someone to see our worth then they do not belong in our lives. There is no place for those who are not ready or able to love us now, as we are, and to set them free is to create space in our heart for those who will see us, and love us, as we deserve; it is to set ourselves free also. To love without expectation does not mean we should ever be okay with a love that offers us no loyalty, respect, understanding, or hurts us in any way. But that we learn to love without an expectation of outcome; that we cannot place those we love inside our predetermined ideas of relationship but must allow love to manifest of its own accord, all the while finding the grace to accept we may not always get the outcome we hope for. It is allowing those we love to put their own needs first, even if those needs do not include us; to become whole enough within ourselves that we do not need another to complete us. To love ourselves enough that we do not need another to prove we are worthy of love. To learn to love in a way which honours both them and ourselves. It is accepting there are days love will hurt; days our wounds of rejection and abandonment will be reopened when someone we have loved is no longer there. It is learning to sit with our pain in those times, to lean into it and know this too shall pass; tomorrow it will hurt less to breathe, tomorrow we will lift our heads a little higher toward the sky [continued in comments] - @kathyparkerwriter on Instagram
