The road was leading up to this. Today we made the very difficult decision to keep Amelia home until January. We love her school so much (when I say love I mean L.O.V.E โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ) but with Covid cases rising by the second, and very little information known about this virus, plus government and non government officials LYING left and right, we just donโt know what fight we are fighting. So with that, we decided that the best for us as a family was to simply accept the dual role of professionals + homeschoolers. . This entire time weโve been complaining about how hard itโs been. We barely sleep, routines are out of whack, and truth be told our daughter has been at the mercy of Cat in the Hat, Blippy, Sesame Street, AND Booba Cartoon. Honestly, out of all of us, sheโs the one whoโs been hurting the most (even though she doesnโt know it). It breaks my heart every time Iโm in a meeting and I look back at her and sheโs sitting there staring at the TV. In my head I wonder what all of this will mean for her. We are all trying our very best but this covid thing is very real, not just from a medical perspective but a psychological and emotional one. . This room was supposed to be my office/meditation/sound healing room. It was supposed to be my indoor โshe shedโ (while we wait on buying a house next year and setting up our airstream in the back which I plan on turning into a full blown โshe shedโ. Through my struggles the last couple of months while adapting to a new job, a new career and now homeschooling, I realized that I havenโt fully adapted to all these changes that I have zero control over. I used to have Miaโs play area downstairs, next to the living room, across from the dining room which I had turned into my office. It was just a mess- I was a mess, my house was a mess, and honestly everything was a mess ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ. . Pero bueno, this weekend we had an epiphany and rather than me holding on to that โboho she shedโ dream, I decided to open up and share this space with her. Because out of all of us, SHEโS the one who needs it the most. Our first day of school in our new home was everything I expected. Full of magicโจ+ connection + love๐ค+ fun AND some frustration + whining + resistance soooo basically the same as every day always. And it was perfectly imperfect and all I hoped it would be๐ซ The thing is, the space doesnโt make or break the learning. Itโs the energy and connection that Iโve found really make a difference for us and that is a l w a y s a work in progress for us (mostly me๐๐ปโโ๏ธ). Yesterday was a pretty big day! The kids enjoyed themselves to the fullest and it made my worrying mama heart so happy! I love their school and their teachers beyond words and am SO grateful for all of the hard work and endless effort they put into making their school The Absolute Best! .... but like... itโs still me and I thought I would share some total fails with you that happened yesterday ๐๐๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐๐๐ป So I packed the kids lunches the night before (I shared on stories ๐๐ป ๐) Well at around 10am I got an email from Wentworthโs teacher reading โWentworthโs lunchbox looks really fullโ and remind me that it was noon dismissal!! ๐๐๐ป for some reason it made me laugh so hard!! *** Iโd rather send too much food than not enough!! ๐๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ I knew it was noon dismissal but my late-night-lunch-packing-self didnโt put the pieces together. ๐งฉ Second thingโ I didnโt put lentils in Avalinaโs lunch box!!!! ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ Argo she only had snacks to eat all day!!! Oh my gooooosh mom of the year award right here!! She told me as soon as I picked her up and we laughed about it and I of course apologized, I couldnโt believe I did that!! We are 7ish weeks into this homeschooling gig and Iโm finally taking a deep breath. This weekend is gonna look like a lot of re-evaluating. One child is flying through the daily work. One child is hanging on by a thread. One child wants to join in the work allllll the time. And the other would much rather play outside, come in for a 15 minute lesson, and scootch right back on out. I honestly like the challenge of a *not* one-size-fits-all approach, Iโm actually enjoying all the together time, and Iโm satisfied with the learning that really is occurring. Iโve listened to The Call of the Wild and Free, am currently in the middle The Brave Learner, and am consistently grateful that teaching is intuitive. Yes, I was trained to be an educator and I taught a handful of years before becoming a MommaโBut thereโs something about that God-given intuitionโ knowing what our children need, deeply embedded in every motherโs heart. Trust it. I have had several messages and texts and conversations with friends who are just about to start their homeschooling adventure and while Iโm by no means an expert or veteran, I want to pass on a little encouragement: take one day/one subject at a time, youโll find your rhythm, you have so much time, the schedule is yours alone, go outside and run around with your kids, read that book aloud, explore and enjoy just being together. Your children are resilient and WILL learn this year (even if you all cry a few times in the first few weeks!) Iโm rooting for you!! - @thecocklehomestead on Instagram

I love sweet kidsโ books. โThe Kissing Handโ is definitely on my list of heart-warmers. It fits very well for kindergartners at the beginning of the year because of the anxiety they must face leaving their safety and starting something new. Although, about 75% of my class has attended Pre-school or the equivalent, I still think itโs a perfect beginning of the year book fit that hits home for a lot of kids. I have a Listening Center as one of my Independent Centers and kids respond to the book after they have listened to it. I usually like to make my response questions โtext-to-selfโ or โtext-to-worldโ because it requires some out-of-the-box thinking. Sometimes we brainstorm together first what a possible response could be, but I usually try to make it as open-ended as possible and not give them ideas. Itโs always so cute to see the stories and thoughtful responses that come out during this Center. How will you remember lockdown? 6 weeks nearly complete and I donโt deny that itโs been grueling everyday without the support of family, friends, school teachers and work colleagues in the flesh, Iโm an extrovert and usually recharge around others! This week Iโve decided to take the learnings and make this last 2 weeks as something positive overall. Hereโs where Iโll start and would love to know what you learnt as Iโm sure I could do it better next time (please never though!); 1) healthy grazing platters everyday (sometimes paired with ๐ท after 5pm, just for the antioxidants of-course ๐ ) , 2) all homeschool parents deserve a week off parenting (not sure how this would work, but our kids all owe us a granny-flat instead of aged-care facility when we are old and grey), 3) active-wear must not have a tight waist band (used primarily as โin-active wearโ and much more comfortable with thick waist band), 4) saved $$$ not buying any cosmetics or hair products (skin actually improved and hair more shiny and less damaged too), 5) I chose my husband well (survived the weekdays and weekends doing both the parenting, socializing and home-school/work-life together), 6) blessed to have 2 beautiful daughters who are home-bodies unlike their mum and who love โค๏ธ homeschool (they were so independent and dedicated to learning - not saying it was easy but they did concentrate in short bursts and both even won their school golden awards ๐ ). #grateful #learningeveryday #goodbyelockdown - @katesave on Instagram
