A group of Grade 11 students from Garth Webb Secondary School (GWSS) in #OakvilleON are designing and selling custom-made shirts and sweaters to support those affected by COVID-19. Called @thehaltonunityproject, the fundraiser is created and managed by Aiysha Hussain, Selin Yenigun, Kiran Tailor, Mehr Siraj and Ximena Martinez Luebbert who design the custom apparel for students in #HaltonON and beyond. Through the Project, the group’s goal is to raise funds to support COVID-19 patients while uniting their peers and the Halton community at a time when many feel distanced. The group began the project in the spring and officially launched the Halton Unity Project website to sell their apparel on July 1. “We created this project because we wanted to show our gratitude to all the public healthcare workers who have put themselves on the frontlines for us during this pandemic,” says the group. “Along with this, the purpose of our initiative is to help connect our community. Ever since this pandemic started, we have noticed a divide in our community. We want to use this project to unify our community, as solidarity is what we need during these trying times.” All funds raised will be donated to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital @haltonhealthcare. The ELYSIAN CAFÉ, 1001 WASHINGTON ST, has gone through many changes in its 125 year existence. The 1000 block of Washington St. was empty at the time of the 1885 photo. The Quartett Club (later the Gayety Theater) and the Elks Lodge #74 were built between 1891 and 1905. As early as 1902 Jacob Dillinger and August Jefsen were operating a Saloon at 1001 Washington St. and in 1904 applied to the City Council for a House of Public Entertainment License. By 1910 John L. Himes was operating a Café and Restaurant at the same location. However, by the time of Prohibition in 1925, local directories show the Nicholas Confectionary operating at 1001 Wash. The longest proprietor of the Elysian, James Quinn, was a WW2 Veteran, Business Administrator and interim Mayor of Hoboken. By the 1980’s and 90’s the Elysian was a popular bar where bands such as Hoboken’s own, Who’s Your Daddy, appeared on regular occasions and posed for photograph’s. Towards the end of this period, the Elysian was the location for the assassination of Kevin Bacon in the 1997 film, SLEEPERS. 2003 saw the Elysian brought back to its Victorian grandeur by local restaurateurs Eugene and Joyce Flinn. In June, two people—a 38-year-old mountain climber from Colorado and a 19-year-old on a gap year from around Boston—became the first two folks to finish the Appalachian Trail this year, climbing the closed Mount Katahdin (in one case) under cover of dark. They walked 2,200 miles over 14 states, breaking federal, state, and local trespassing laws along the way, and lying to or running from cops and park rangers several times. For Outside, I interviewed them and wrote about the white male privilege of hiking the Appalachian Trail, especially during a pandemic and amid the fight for long-overdue racial justice. In the last few weeks, people have been pouring through our little town again, heading north on the Trail, as if the pandemic or protests are over. On April 13, Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan along with the Livonia Police Department Chief Curtis Caid picked up protective face shields from the company’s Livonia plant where AlphaUSA’s engineers deployed a prototype process to test their face shield concept and complete the initial order. “Thank you so much,” said Mayor Brosnan. “This means a lot to have a company like AlphaUSA stepping up. There have often been times where Alonzo received less blood than his body required due to there being a lack of compatible blood type in the country. I have just come across another great story in our community that I wanted to share. The northeast corner of Belmont & DeVilliers belongs to Rev. John Powell of Truth for Youth. However, he was gracious enough to allow his parking lot to serve as a coordination base for visiting electrical workers. One day on their return, Rev. Powell provided a hot meal to say thank you for serving the community. Rev. Powell, thank you for showing our hospitality and appreciation for our visitors who came to restore our electricity. Hey governors — like @nygovcuomo in New York, @gavinnewsom in California, @govlarryhogan in Maryland, and @govpritzker in Illinois — what action are you taking NOW to reduce the prison population in your state so that we can stop the spread of the novel coronavirus and save lives? Our lives have changed in enormous ways in recent weeks to decrease the spread of COVID-19 across the country, in large part through social distancing and increased hygiene practices. Neither of those necessary steps are possible, though, in the jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers across the US that hold more than 2 million people. These facilities often are overcrowded and they lack basic hygiene options and health care resources — circumstances that make COVID-19 outbreaks inevitable. Already, the jail on Rikers Island in New York appears to have the highest concentration of COVID-19 cases in the world. Making this problem even worse, the churn of staff and others in and out of these facilities daily means that a COVID-19 outbreak in jails and prisons will lead to illness among staff and spread of COVID-19 in the households and communities where those employees return at the end of every shift. Governors across the nation need to take decisive action NOW to reduce jail and prison populations through whatever powers they have at their disposal, including commuting sentences or granting reprieves to bring people home now. It’s been an eventful week! With your generosity, over 1700 fresh meals were provided to the incredible staff at @suny.downstate this week. We were able to provide meals to essential hospital employees - including doctors, nurses, hospital security, administrators, custodial staff and other unsung heroes who commit to serve every day to help keep the hospital running smoothly. Today, we had another delivery from Fillmore’s Tavern, who provided 200 meals and Peppa’s, who provided another 200 meals. Never did I expect to feel so. many. things. from a trip to the grocery store. It had been nearly 4 weeks since I entered a store of any kind. The last time I went grocery shopping, it looked exactly how youd remember it And there I was, standing in line with a mask on my face, gloves on my hand, waiting to be let in to the store. When I was permitted to enter, I was directed to a hand washing station, after which I could grab a freshly sanitized cart and proceed into the store. I was so focused on maintaining 6 feet apart from everyone that I started losing focus of what I was there for. I thought I was doing ok until someone came too close to me and I went into full panic attack mode. My heart was racing, I had trouble breathing, I got that tingle in my stomach that you get when youre really nervous. I went to a corner of the store and hid until I could catch my breath. I wrapped up my trip and head home. My daughter came running at me wanting a hug. My heart broke to tell her no, I needed to get clean first. I disinfected every single product, went to have a shower, washed my clothes then put the groceries away And you know what.... Apart from a slight cringe at having to use one plastic produce bag, and enough thought to choose the fair trade coffee over the others, my mind was completely blank to even thinking about making eco conscious choices. My head was not there I had 3 things on my mind and 3 things only: food to feed my family, my health, and my safety and protection. And in a hard lesson Im reminded of how crucial a sense of stability in our most basic needs is before we can make room for self-actualization I didnt recognize the person I was in that store today. Where was the girl who could happily go shopping with a clear head to make eco conscious choices? She was in hiding. One day she will be back. New Government Restrictions Announced Six months after announcing the original Lockdown, Boris Johnson announced new restrictions to curb a second lockdown… Last night, Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced new restrictions which will last a further six-months and has warned the public to follow them to avoid a second national lockdown. The new restrictions include a 10pm enforced closing time for all pubs and restaurants, stricter rules on facemasks and a renewed ban on indoor sports which go alongside last weeks announcement of the ‘rule of six.’ Pubs and restaurants will be restricted by law to table service only, except for takeaways, and table bookings for more than six people are no longer allowed. Businesses can now be fined up to £10k if they take reservations over six and do not enforce social distancing or take diner’s contact details. Office staff will once again be urged to work from home where possible. Cabinet Minister, Michael Gove, said, “If you are in a COVID-secure workplace, then you should be there if your job requires it.” However, he also said otherwise, people should work at home. Unfortunately, from Monday the 28th of September, only 15 people will be able to attend weddings or civil partnerships, while funerals will be limited to 30 people. To enforce the rules, Johnson announced an increase in fines with a fine of £200 for the first offence now in force. He also said, “If people don’t follow the rules we have set out, then we must reserve the right to go further,” and, “Now is the time for us all to summon the discipline, and the resolve, and the spirit of togetherness that will carry us through.” Deaths from Covid-19 remain low - accounting for only 1% of deaths in England and Wales in the week to 11 September. But deaths are rising rather than falling for the first time since the beginning of April. And there are fears that rising numbers of patients in hospital will lead to more fatalities. The governments chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has warned there could be 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October - leading to more than 200 deaths per day by mid-November - unless action is taken. Our Rose Haven guests are some of the most incredibly strong spirits, and Shirley is no different. Her resilient love for her daughter Kendra, her family, herself and her community is inspiring. Shirley started coming to Rose Haven in the 90’s and has participated in a transitional housing program, school supply drives, supply services, shopping program and she’s still involved with us through volunteering and continuing to build community with other women and folks. Shirley’s daughter Kendra was killed by Portland Police in 2003 and Shirley is committed to honoring Kendra and other Black children killed by police. She advocates for social change and even went to the 57th anniversary March On Washington to say her daughter’s name. “I have a family history of bowel cancer and was told to have a colonoscopy when I turned 40.⁠ ⁠ At 39 I developed a lump on my chest. Knowing that men also get breast cancer I decided to have it checked out and my other checks early.⁠ ⁠ The lump on my breast turned out to be a silly ingrown hair. My colonoscopy showed bowel cancer.⁠ ⁠ Further tests also showed a kidney cancer. I had two separate primary cancers. About a month prior to my 40th birthday I had surgery that removed one kidney and my ascending colon.⁠ ⁠ Both cancers where on the verge of breaking out but were contained.
