Did you know that the first NFL game was played here in Dayton, Ohio, nearly 100 years ago? The Dayton Triangles were a semi-pro football team, most of whose players had regular jobs and played football on the weekends for fun and little money. They were the successor to other teams in our area when formed in 1916 with the backing of three General Motors Companies controlled by industrialists, Colonel Edward Deeds and Charles Kettering, who had also purchased the land that became known as Triangle Park, for their employees recreation, and provided a field for the football team. On September 17, 1920, at a meeting of semi-pro teams held in Hays Hupmobile Automobile dealership in Canton, Ohio, the America Professional Football Association was founded. The Dayton Triangles were one of the first 4 teams to join the Association. The first game played between 2 league teams was played at Triangle Park on October 3, 1920, a game in which the Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles, 14 to 0. The first touchdown scored in the new Association was by Lou Partlow George “Hobby” Kinderline kicked the first point after. Their manager, Carl Storck, participated in the formation of the league at the Canton meeting. In 1921 he was named league secretary-treasurer; and in 1939 he became president of the NFL. In 1922, the Association, now with 12 member teams changed their name to the National Football League. Attendance at games played at Triangle Park was in the 2,000-5,000 range. As the league grew the Triangles would frequently travel by train to play teams that included the Chicago Bears, The NY Giants, and the Green Bay Packers. The growth of teams in large cities had much to do with the eventual financial failure of the Triangles. In 1929 they were sold to the Brooklyn Dodgers. #daytonhistory #carillonpark #daytontriangles #triangles #football #trianglepark #daytonohio #professionalfootball #history #historicfootball #team #historicfootballteam #teammerchandise #merchandise #support #teamsupport #anniversary #100years #100thanniversary #century #centuryanniversary - @daytonhistory on Instagram

Last week @lastprisonerproject filed an amicus brief in Washington v. Barr urging the Supreme Court to take up current classification of cannabis. We are proud to have help draft and stand with the petitioners and other amici including @lastprisonerproject @minoritycannabis , @m4mmunited , @americansforsafeaccess , @athletes4care , @nationalcannabisindustry , @hillerpc @arcviewgroup Group and several members of Congress. Our countrys federal marijuana policy needlessly entangles millions of people in the criminal legal system at a tremendous societal cost. We also know that the unjust burden of these misguided policies disproportionately fall on the most vulnerable segments of our society. Descheduling marijuana is critical to ensuring that all Americans are able to obtain safe and effective medical treatment without fear of the devastating consequences of potential criminal or civil sanctions resulting from the federal scheduling of marijuana. . . . #deschedulecannabis #cannabislawyers #cannabislaws #cannabislawyer #cannabislawreform #cannabislaw #LPP #lastprisonerproject #williambarr #legalweed #legalizeit #legalmarijuana #cannabiscommunity #cannabisindustry #cannabisnews #medicalmarijuana - @i.n.c.b.a on Instagram

The women pictured in yesterday’s trivia question were students in the cooking program at the David Hale Fanning Trade School. Originally known as the Worcester Girls Trade School, the school opened in 1911 at 2 State Street and offered classes in power machine operating, dressmaking, and millinery. At that time, many girls between the ages of 14 and 16 dropped out of school to join the workforce, only to see their opportunities curtailed by their lack of industrial skills. In the words of its second director, Helen Hildreth, the Trade School was intended to provide girls with technical training, thus securing “the proper status of woman in the working world.” When a fire destroyed the school building in 1919, the school relocated to 24 Chatham Street. David Hale Fanning, the founder of the Royal Worcester Corset Company, offered $100,000 for the new school building under the condition that it be renamed in his honor. Many additional training programs were added over the years, reflecting the expansion of women’s occupations. New programs in the 1920s included Cooking as a Trade, Cafeteria/Tea Room Service, Printing, and Scientific Care of Hair and Skin. In the 1960s, students could receive training as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Surgical Technician, and Dental Assistant. Information Processing courses were added in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the school merged with the Worcester Vocational High School, and is now known as the Worcester Technical High School. - @worcesterhistoricalmuseum on Instagram
