PRAYER IS YOUR INHERENT RIGHT +Do you pray? Prayer is a tool of the oppressed. It requires no religious allegiance. It requires no gods. It affects all things. It empowers. It unites. Prayer is your direct connection to the motion of all things. You can pray in silence before you sleep, or while you walk a path, or while you make your food. You can pray in song or in art, you can pray through acts of love. +Some people call this “casting a spell,” some call it “meditation,” and some call it “creative practice.” The processes of focus, channeling, release, and trust are the same. +There are particular words we can use. Over them, we can lay our desires, our awe, our gratitude, our sorrow. The words are like ships or smoke, taking the essence of our intention and carrying it to the other realms. This is why people write prayers. When you have a good ship you can sail far. +It is also the case that some of these prayers have been spoken by our ancestors for generations. When we speak them too, we create an echo backwards and forwards through our lineages. For a moment we exist in a prism of stillness that is shared across lifetimes. +Many people have been ostracized from the practice of praying, or from the traditional prayers of their ancestors, by the decimating oppression, colonization, and inquisition of christian and catholic churches. These religions are not concerned with truth, but with power. They attempted to snuff out what could not be extinguished. That is, the notion that all people possess a direct connection to Spirit. @savetibetid 🇮🇩 @history.of.palestine 🇵🇸 @sejarah_romawi 🇲🇨 @bahassejarah 🇲🇨 @tolololpedia.bandar.jaya 🇲🇨 @lostwithiniran 🇮🇷 @phosa.mosa 🇬🇧 #jakarta #indonesia #sejarah #armenia #turki #palestina #history #ABC_challenge #eropa #pendidikan #SPQR #maniak #malaysia #kualalumpur #lahat #lahore #kashmir #bali #semarang #sindh #punjab - @sejarah.armenia on Instagram

#200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. In doing this, they unknowingly created a world-class healthcare system. #ClevelandHistory #PresbyterianChurch #Bicentennial 📸: Courtesy of University Hospitals - @oldstonechurchcle on Instagram

On Sunday, September 23rd, police marched in and arrested 250 Black men in South Atlanta. These men had gathered to discuss how to protect their community. Miles away, police had caught wind of the gathering and panicked at the thought of an impending retaliatory attack. They stormed the neighborhood to disarm and disable the group. A shoot-out ensued when they arrived. In the midst of the gunfire, a white police officer was killed. And just like that, the #southatlanta men were quickly rounded up and carted off for booking. It was one of many scenes of chaos and injustice unfurling across Atlanta during the race riots in 1906. This story, and the larger narrative about the Atlanta Race Riots, wasn’t included in the history curriculum of Atlanta Public Schools until 2006, one hundred years after its occurrence. And South Atlanta was #Brownsville back then. Just over 100 years later, we wanted to be sure to share it with our friends and neighbors across the city. At FCS, we’re fixated on neighboring, dignity, and development. Just as we listen to our neighbors and partners, we want to listen to what history has to tell us about South Atlanta today. #atlantahistory #atlantariot #southatlantahistory - @fcsministries on Instagram

Nashville first became known internationally as Music City not for its country music, but because of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The Jubilee Singers have headlined halls and auditoriums, performing for queens and kings and heads of state, across the country and around the globe for nearly 150 years. Without musical accompaniment, the a cappella troupe has sung as if the very survivability of Fisk University depended upon them. September #shortdresshistorystory month for our school. STORY No.1 ‘My First Dress History Book’ - When I was 12 years old I decided I wanted to be a costume designer in the theatre. My first ‘book’ on the subject of dress history was due to the fact that both my parent drank huge quantities of Brooke Bond tea, so I could collect all the picture cards that came, one at a time, inside every packet of tea they bought. It is not surprising that this tiny book on British costume is full of good information because the texts were written by Madeleine Ginsburg, a founder member of the Costume Society and curator of textiles and dress at the V&A, who passed away recently at the age of 91 (obituary from Costume Society newsletter shown). Scroll through these images to see the back page of the book where ‘Things To Do While You Collect The Cards’ still offers some good suggestions and the ‘Selected Book List’ includes Janet Arnold’s ‘Patterns of Fashion Volume 1’. - @historiadobrasil_oficial on Instagram

Gertrud Arndt 5. Having returned to the Bauhaus Dessau in 1929 when her husband, Alfred, was hired as head of the interior design workshop, Gertrud Arndt found herself living in one of the teacher’s houses on the edge of the campus with no formal role at the school, and feeling bored and frustrated. Eager to focus on photography, she converted the bathroom into a makeshift dark room. . In 1930, Arndt began the series of Mask Portraits that would preoccupy her for several years. Throughout her time at the Bauhaus she had photographed friends, including a fellow weaving student Otti Berger, but became increasingly frustrated by the difficulty of expressing her vision through her subjects. Convinced that the process would be more productive if she posed for self-portraits, Arndt transformed herself into different female characters through dramatic make-up, exaggerated facial gestures and the theatrical outfits she created from the tulles, laces, ribbons, hats, collars, antique clothes and other knickknacks that Otti Berger had collected over the years. . “You just need to open your eyes and already you are someone else, or you can open your mouth wide, or something like that, and a different person has already appeared,” she said. “And if you dress up in costume as well… It’s like looking into the mirror and pulling faces.” Having designed the desired subject, Arndt then faced the technical challenge of photographing herself: a process that involved a broom, a stone and activating the shutter by pulling a long piece of black twine. Over the next three years, Arndt produced over 43 of her painstakingly planned self-portraits, each of which depicted a singular interpretation of female identity. She concluded the project in 1931 with the birth of her and Alfred’s first child, their daughter, Alexandra. . #design #bauhaus #photography #gertrudarndt #alfredanrdt #ottiberger #womenindesign #designandgender . #MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. This Gender Equity Week explore the stories of other women who pushed boundaries and broke the glass ceiling on our Lady Action online tour. This shows the catafalque and pavilion on Public Square for the funeral of James A. Garfield held in September of 1881 following his death by assassination. Over 150,000 people attended. The line for the public viewing was said to have extended all the way to the viaduct bridge. This scene was painfully familiar in the minds of the Cleveland people as only sixteen years prior, a funeral had been held on Public Square for Abraham Lincoln. Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”. They held fairs and exhibitions to showcase the skills of craftsmen, as well as lectures, dances, and marches down Congress Street where groups of tradespeople would carry handmade banners to promote their crafts - like this amazing Cabinet Maker’s trade banner from 1841. . . #laborday #laborhistory #mainemechanics #maine200 #mainehistory #portlandme #portlandmaine #historicpreservation #thisplacematters - @portlandlandmarks on Instagram

#MughalMondays “I saw that broken-down old man – not in a room, but in a miserable hole of his palace – lying on a bedstead, with nothing to cover him but a miserable tattered coverlet. As I beheld him, so remembrance of his former greatness seemed to rise in his mind. He rose with difficulty from his couch; showed me his arms which were eaten into by disease and by flies – partly from want of water; and he said, in a lamentable voice, that he had not enough to eat.” - The Last Mughal, William Dalrymple On 19 September, 1857 The Emperor with his sons and wives was arrested at Humayuns Tomb where he had taken refuge. He was brought to Red Fort and a year later on 27 January, 1858 at 11 am with utmost humiliation his trial started. The same place where he and his ancestors had decided the fate of so many people. He was tried for waging war against the British, a consequence of Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The trial lasted 41 days, had 19 hearings, 21 witnesses and over a hundred documents in Persian and Urdu (with English translation). Initially, Bahadur Shah Zafar did not understand when he was asked if he pleads guilty. He finally broke silence on 20th day defending himself against these charges. He defended that the young sepoys completely overtook the command and forced his seal on empty envelopes. Zafars ultimate blow came from his most trusted physician and Prime Minister Hakim Ahsanullah Khan who betrayed him by presenting evidence to the court against his own safety. Respecting Captain Hodsons guarantee, Zafar was not sentenced to death but exiled to Rangoon, Burma. Zafar, his wives and some princes began their journey in bullock carts towards Rangoon. He passed away at the age of 87 in 1862. Kitna he badnaseeb Zafar dafn ke liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili ku-e-yar mein. (How unfortunate is Zafar, he could not even get two yards of land for burial in the land of his beloved.) 🤓 Research by EIH Volunteer @sushobhitarimly227 #history #heritage #arthistory #art #artoftheday #artofinstagram #igramming_india #travelphotography #traverealindia #TheCultureGully #incredibleindia #indianblogger #covid_19 #quarantineandchill #quarantinelife #lockdown2020 - @enroute_indian_history_ on Instagram

//.Thankful to the Women of nineteenth century.// In the early years of nineteenth century When silk fabrics were found expensive Where corsets were made tight enough To keep a good body posture. The only purpose a women had after a certain age Was to be good and disciplined in three roles, To be a good daughter To be a good wife To be a good mother. The need of permission was necessary In a womens life, either if it was for love, work or marriage. Her tears were like dews on grass Which evaporated easily when there was no one to wipe them off. Her voice was like crow but just silent enough that no one can hear. Sometimes it was hard to even recognize what she is and what she had become. The only work she was allowed to do Was weave the colorful threads into a desired beautiful gown. Or to work in a factory with swollen hands. This way or the other, no women was allowed to enter into the real world. When she can be equal to men in all terms.History is sometimes quite confusing But the entrance women for fighting there rights gave a little pursuit of happiness to them Even if it took years to obtain it. It is told to a girl in her early ages, That she must marry well. Because it is believed that, Marriage is an economy proposition In a womens life. She has to marry a wealthy men, Just to save her family from reaching The stages of poverty. It is all about the capability of women That she is only capable to love. But it isnt true, Women have got beautiful minds Which can make a lot of inventions. Great enthusiasm, powerful beauty As well as essence of ambition Which is meant to be brought in the real world. And this emerged in the nineteenth century, Where women gathered courage enough to keep One foot in the queer yet chaotic world. We are thankful to those ambitioned and courageous women of the nineteenth century. To make a beautiful pathway for all the womens in the future, where she can become something and achieve everything. Thankful to Charlotte Brontë, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott and many other authors to bring the epitome of love, work and domesticity, and to teach the importance of women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌏 On the 21st of June of 1945, Ettore Modigliani, former Superintendent of the monuments of Lombardy, returns to one of the most bombarded cities in Italy during the second world war: With deep anguish, I set foot in my Milan. 412-414 (172-174 old numbers) Washington Street. Originally built in 1853 as an Armory, which helped supply troops with guns and ammo throughout the Civil War. ¤ In 1881 and again in 1893 the building was remodeled slightly becoming the new home of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Celebrations and gatherings of all kinds were held at the Odd Fellows Hall, decorations provided of course by United Decorating ¤ In the 1920’s the Odd Fellows moved to 227 Washington and the Palace Garden began to occupy the space. Much like its predecessor, the Palace Garden was a hall that often hosted cabarets and a variety of other performances. ¤ The building was once again renovated to its current appearance. Information about the “Lining Store” appears to be nonexistent. In the 1940s it was the home of W.T. Grant Department Store. A wooden escalator was installed to transport customers between the two massive store floors. ¤ In the 1970’s 412-414 became Queens Department Store, a local favorite for everything and anything boasting, “Queens Will Treat You Right.” Eventually Blockbuster moved into the space, but sadly closed in 2011. Today it is the home to clothing retailer Anthropolgie. ¤ Trying to follow the lineage of this building has proven difficult, if I left anything out or you would like to add something, I would love to hear you share in the comments below! #HobokenHistory #Hoboken #History #NewJersey #NJ #NJHistory #WashingtonStreet - @hobokenhistory on Instagram

In cosa consisteva? 🇬🇧 In the streets of Florence, in the mid-fifteenth century, you could meet young people playing a popular game called “Civettino”. What were the rules? Probably the players had to hit each other with the hands and the feet as a tool to keep a safety distance between the contenders. Even today morning, Sunday 27 September, you could meet people playing games and sports in the streets of Florence. They wont slap as in the Civettino game but they will all keep a fair distance. In fact, doing physical activity outdoors and safely is the right way to take part in the extraordinary edition of #corrilavita2020. In the afternoon, then, those who have trained and reserved a visit throught @cittanascostafirenze, will be able to enter many cultural destinations in Florence for free. And among these there will also be the Palazzo Davanzati Museum, where this splendid representation of a sport of yesteryear, created by Giovanni di Ser Giovanni known as Lo Scheggia, is exhibited. #palazzodavanzati #museidelbargello #corrilavita #corrilavitanonsiferma #gep2020 #giovannidisergiovanni #loscheggia #adayinflorence - @bargellomuseums on Instagram

Little House on the Prairie is an ever-popular series of children’s books based on the life of one Laura Ingalls Wilder. But who was Mrs. Wilder and what was her life like? And how did she go from being a pioneer to a celebrated author? Born and raised in a pioneer family, Wilder traveled quite a bit throughout her childhood, ever surrounded by nature and her three sisters and parents, whom she loved dearly. She carried these pioneer memories and the experiences she shared with her close-knit family throughout her life, a wealth of stories just waiting to be explored. As an adult, Wilder settled in Mansfield, Missouri, where she finally put pen to paper and began the Little House series. From being an active member in her community of Mansfield to butting heads with her editor of the series (who was also her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane), Wilder undoubtedly led a rich, exciting life, from start to finish. And that isn’t to say of all the tragedies her family faced along the way. Discover the trials that the Wilder family experienced and how the book series came to be. Today we wrap up our week-long look at the Levy familys role in saving Monticello by sharing a few images that document their stewardship and dedication, and the changing times as seen on Jefferson’s “little mountain” long after he was gone. We have two photographers to thank for these images: William Roads, who took the earliest known photograph of Monticello, and the prolific Rufus W. Holsinger, whose 1,400 plates and negatives provide a remarkable and often moving record of life in Charlottesville and Central Virginia.
