The Bay-and-Gable beauty is Torontos most predominant heritage house style, and after more than 130 years, still lines the streets throughout Cabbagetown intact and carefully restored. These remnants of life in late nineteenth-century Toronto represent a style that is distinct in both its simplicity and grace. Bay-and-Gable houses were rarely built as detached, but were usually erected as double and row dwellings, and were very popular between 1875 and 1890. #TorontoHistory #Architecture #Victorian #Cabbagetown - @cabbagetownhcd on Instagram
- @rosarioeneltiempo on Instagram

St. James Church was built by Col. James Skinner in 1823. In 1988, INTACH Delhi Chapter was approached by the Church Committee who had no financial resources to restore the church. With sheer determination to see the process through, INTACH mobilized resources and involved agencies such as Govt. of NCT of Delhi, HM Queen Elizabeth II, British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia, Indian Army Regiment of Skinners Horse (1st Horse), INTACH UK Trust, @britishcouncil, @iccrom_official to undertake the conservation work. By 1999, the project was competed wherein major elements of the #conservation were the #restoration of the cracks in the dome, addressing issues of extensive seepage and badly damaged stained glass windows. #TriviaTuesday: A frequently asked question is, “How tall was King Kalakaua?” Kalakaua did not answer the height question on his 1881 passport and media reports of the King’s height vary. A non-local newspaper reported during his 1881 trip that he was just 5’ tall, which is way too short, while another paper reported he was 5’11”. This photo of Kalakaua standing on the lanai next to the Chinese urns provides us with a great clue. The Chinese urns contain a decorative element, indicated by the red arrows, that can serve as a useful reference point. By examining the King’s stature in relation to that point, we can finally determine the King’s height. The color photo is of two Palace volunteers standing next to the very same urn. Ipolani on the left is 5’8” and Jeffery is 5’10”. From this evidence we can extrapolate that the king was likely about the same height as Ipolani. So, how tall was Kalakaua? We will let you decide — let us know what you think! - @iolanipalacehi on Instagram

Photo #18 of our Hidden Gems Collection looks north from Lake Worth Inlet (often called Palm Beach Inlet) at Singer Island, about 1918. During the Civil War, Palm Beach’s first white settler, Augustus Oswald Lang, dug a trench for access from landlocked freshwater Lake Worth to the ocean. Lang’s inlet brought in saltwater that turned the lake into a brackish lagoon. Settlers hand-dug a new, more stable inlet in 1877 about a mile further north, where a rock formation called Black Rocks would add some protection. In 1915 the Florida Legislature chartered what became the Port of Palm Beach District and built a new Lake Worth Inlet at the site of the original inlet. To browse or buy photos from our online collections, visit hspbc.pastperfectonline.com. These scanned photos are just part of our archives’ 4 million images. The intersection of George Street and Brock Street looked very different 150 years ago. The building on the southwest corner was once an early example of the Second Empire style in Peterborough. It was owned by George A. Cox, who was a prominent businessman and politician. By the 1950s, the upper floors were removed, and the facade changed considerably. University of Bristol has a great Historical Photographs of China series where we came across these images (reference number: Di-s02) Jack and Bella Hobbs (née Dinsdale) on the balcony of a property, in Bubbling Well Road (now Nanjing Xi Lu), Shanghai. Probably either a Hotel or a Guest House. Detail of the shot shows a European woman maybe a governess, or teacher, standing with a child and an amah. One might assume that “ayah” and “amah” come from an Asian language. It actually derives from the Portuguese ‘aia’ (“nursemaid”), which in turn comes from the Latin ‘avia’ (“grandmother”), just as “amah” is from the Portuguese ama (“nurse”), which descends from the Medieval Latin amma (“mother”), though some suggest it was the Chinese ah ma (“little mother”, “grandmother”). It was, after all, the Portuguese whose empire first – some two centuries before the British – extended across vast territories, including south, southeast and east Asia. #ayahshome - @ayahshome on Instagram

Besides Independence Hall (one of Americas few urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites), were a World Heritage City because of the rich array of historic buildings and cultural sites that are designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHL), including the parks gems of Georgian architecture: Mount Pleasant (designated 1974) and Woodford (designated 1967). Thanks to the City, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the stewardship organizations, and countless other people who have dedicated their time, energy, and funds to preserving these outstanding landmarks in the East Park! 412-414 (172-174 old numbers) Washington Street. Originally built in 1853 as an Armory, which helped supply troops with guns and ammo throughout the Civil War. ¤ In 1881 and again in 1893 the building was remodeled slightly becoming the new home of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Celebrations and gatherings of all kinds were held at the Odd Fellows Hall, decorations provided of course by United Decorating ¤ In the 1920’s the Odd Fellows moved to 227 Washington and the Palace Garden began to occupy the space. Much like its predecessor, the Palace Garden was a hall that often hosted cabarets and a variety of other performances. ¤ The building was once again renovated to its current appearance. Information about the “Lining Store” appears to be nonexistent. In the 1940s it was the home of W.T. Grant Department Store. A wooden escalator was installed to transport customers between the two massive store floors. ¤ In the 1970’s 412-414 became Queens Department Store, a local favorite for everything and anything boasting, “Queens Will Treat You Right.” Eventually Blockbuster moved into the space, but sadly closed in 2011. Today it is the home to clothing retailer Anthropolgie. ¤ Trying to follow the lineage of this building has proven difficult, if I left anything out or you would like to add something, I would love to hear you share in the comments below! #HobokenHistory #Hoboken #History #NewJersey #NJ #NJHistory #WashingtonStreet - @hobokenhistory on Instagram
