September 15 - October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month! According to the U.S. Census, the Hispanic community accounts for almost 20% of the country’s population. However, books with Latinx/Hispanic/Latin American characters only comprise 13% of our diverse picture book collection — and an even smaller fraction of the total children’s lit market. Fortunately, School Library Journal @sljournal recently shared this list of recommended picture book biographies about Latinx luminaries (link in bio.), which would be valuable additions to any bookshelf. The following titles are currently in our collection (with the others coming soon): ALL EQUAL / TODOS IGUALES (2019) by Christy Hale @christy_hale_bks CARLOS SANTANA (2018) by Gary Golio, illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez @rudy_gutierrez_art MY SHOES AND I (2010) by René Colato Laínez @renecolatolainez, illustrated by Fabricio Vanden Broeck @fabricio_vandenbroeck SOLDIER FOR EQUALITY (2019) by Duncan Tonatiuh We also recommend these additional biographies of Latinx leaders from our collection: BRAVO! (2017) by Margarita Engle @engle.margarita, illustrated by Rafael López @rafael_l61 FRIDA (2002) by Jonah Winter, illustrated by Ana Juan @anajuan_art HARVESTING HOPE (2003) by Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Yuyi Morales @yuyimorales MY NAME IS GABITO (2007) by Monica Brown, illustrated by Raúl Colón PELÉ: KING OF SOCCER (2009) by Monica Brown, illustrated by @rudy_gutierrez_art SONIA SOTOMAYOR (2009) by Jonah Winter, illustrated by Edel Rodriguez #representationmatters #diversechildrensbooks #diversekidlit #diversebooks #diversepicturebooks #picturebooks #latinxkidlit #latinxbooks - @diversebookfinder on Instagram

Today we consider Limboo people to be Nepalese, however before being Nepalese the limboos were a part of Sikkim. The Limboos or Yukthangmo, as they were called, were one of the first members of the kingdom of Sikkim. They occupied the regions west of the Kanchenjunga, commonly referred to as Limbuwan in history. The Limbuwan region was captured by the Maharaja Prithvi Narayan Shah during a war and has remained a part of Nepal since then. The link between Limboos and Sikkim can still be seen in the similarity of alphabets between Limboo language and the sikkimese and lepcha languages and also many similar words. #sikkim #history #limbu #limboo - @sikkimhistory on Instagram

Huichol Yarn paintings and beadwork - opening Open House Features the Finest Huichol Artists By Susan Page Anthropologists consider the Huichol people to be one of the most intact remaining tribes in the Western Hemisphere. Maintaining their ancient lifestyle in the remote Sierra Madre mountains, they are a tribe of corn farmers, artists, and shamans who consider spirituality to be central to their existence. Religion is not a part of life - it is life. The gods are everywhere, including the trees, hills and lakes. Even the lowly stone has a soul. The art they create began as primitive offerings to the gods and has evolved into gorgeous works of art. Our College Fund Gift of the Earth blanket is back on stock. A bold design on a neutral backdrop is inspired by the traditional Hopi pottery of Arizona. Today, Hopi potters draw from generations of knowledge to create their beautiful, unique works of art. This design pays testament to this practice of learning from the past while moving into the future. Created exclusively for the American Indian College Fund, a nonprofit organization that helps fund scholarships for Native American students and tribal colleges. . #pendletonau #pendleton #mypendleton - @pendleton.au on Instagram

The Indigenous people of the Heart of Borneo are commonly known as Dayak. The Dayak Tribes are the native people of Borneo. It is a loose term for over 200 riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups, located principally in the interior of Borneo, each with its own dialect, customs, laws, territory and culture, although common distinguishing traits are readily identifiable. They were animist in belief; however many converted to Moslem and since the 19th century, mass conversion to Christianity. Happy National Daughter’s Day! Skilled in many demanding domestic tasks of their culture, Crow women passed their traditions down from one generation to the next, ensuring the future of their tribe and customs. In this family portrait the distinctive and expressive faces of the grandmother, mother and granddaughter are unique and yet universal. The middle generation carries the weight of responsibility with dignity, the elder, perhaps, now knows joy in understanding the circle of all life. And the adolescent is in that awkward stage we see in many of our own family portraits. Painted against an almost abstract background, there are no landscape or interior details because Terpning’s intent is to focus attention solely on the three women drawing the viewer into their world. Place yourself, paintbrush in hand, in front of a canvas. Who would be looking back at you from the canvas? What emotion would be conveyed? When does it occur? Where does your scene unfold? Why was it important to you to paint that image? @howardterpning #fineart #oilpainting #realism #abstract #threegenerations #nationaldaughtersday #familyportrait #tradition #culture #dignity #grandmother #mother #daughter #granddaughter #circleoflife #whowhatwhenwherewhy @cowboyartistsofamerica @westernartfans @bashasmarkets @ajsfinefoods @foodcityaz @visit_arizona @visitarizona @chandlerlifestyle #chandleraz #thingstodoinchandler - @bashacollection on Instagram
