Im deeply concerned about compromised mental health being used as an excuse for wrong doing, especially here on social media. First up, doing illegal things in real life whether it’s fraud, abuse, plagiarism, or even bullying and trolling people on social media, cannot be absolved because one is struggling with a mental health problem. The reason why is because this adds to the stigma around mental health, why people are afraid to come out about it. If we continue to push this narrative, of absolving bad behavior because of a mental health issue, people who do have a mental illness will forever be judged for being immoral and thereby not seek the help they so desperately need. Secondly, it’s easy to blame social media for a compromised mental state. But it is not the problem, your behavior and how you engage with it, what you choose to communicate (your thought processes), what you choose to consume, who you follow, who you allow into your space are. Blaming social media for your mental health problems is like blaming the Fast Food industry for your high cholesterol, just don’t engage or if you do make healthy choices. It’s all up to you. If we gonna talk about doing the work with regards to social media as a projection of your life, this is it. The skating icon Lillian Tomasino sadly passed away this weekend. Although it did cause her significant physical pain, she did not give up on skating in her later years. Lilian outlived two of her long-term skating partners. We have been planning our Solidarity March for almost a week now but it was recently brought to our knowledge that there is another rally in Hamilton at a similar time that we had scheduled our Solidarity March. We did not know of this rally prior to setting the date for our event. We did not intentionally plan for our march to coincide with another event held by black youth in the community: we would never do that. Our goal from day one is to spread awareness and to encourage others to become more educated on the matter. Knowing this, we would never do anything to step on the toes of the black community, we want to give the time and space for black youth to speak and we are here to amplify their voices. Our motive with this march was to address/bring light to the issue of systemic racism that often stems from local Hamilton/Dundas schools which may continue to impact the potential of many students later on in their lives. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In light of all this, our event planned for June 27th at 3pm will be CANCELLED. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ BUT PLEASE KNOW that our work will continue and we will not stop spreading awareness in our community. We now have a member of the Black community running this page with us to get another stance. Only about 16% of Americans know their sickle cell trait (SCT) status – this number can be even higher in low resourced countries. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ [Sickle Cell 102]: For the sickle cell nerds...⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In most high resource countries, every individual undergoes a blood test within the first 24 hours of life that can diagnose a myriad of conditions including sickle cell disease and #sicklecell trait. Interestingly, this practice only started in the U.S. in every state in the year 2000.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ According to the CDC, most people with SCT do not have any symptoms of SCD although in extreme conditions like dehydration, high altitudes and low oxygen levels in the atmosphere, SCT carriers might experience complications. Some of these complications include exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown), renal medullary carcinoma (a type of kidney cancer), proteinuria (blood in the urine) among many others. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Although the sickle cell mutation is thought to have originated from the equatorial parts of the world and served as a protective factor against malaria, every individual irrespective of race, ethnicity, or ancestry can be a sickle cell trait carrier. Dear Friends, Family, Neighbors, Communities, It is with immense sadness that we will be permanently closing Flow State CoffeeBar. Our last day of business will be Sunday, September 27th. The hardships we have experienced because of Covid-19 have taken its toll and we can’t bear them any longer both financially and emotionally. Despite all of this we are proud that we are going out swinging and with our heads held high. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to you, Philly, for letting us share our vision and talents with you for the past 2 years. Flow State was a radical business idea incubated between three friends over breakfast many years ago. Somehow our European-inspired coffee shop/coworking space/gelateria/bakery idea worked - it means so much to us that you understood and saw us for all that we are. 2020 was supposed to be a year of growth but instead became a year of constant pivoting for survival. Though we have done our best to adapt, Covid-19 has brought us to our end. Thank you for letting us be part of your lives and for becoming a big part of our lives as well. Even though she worked in a young woke office, no one did anything. Instead, she watched her abuser be praised and promoted. Every time he would make a joke, or present an idea that was well-received, I would feel this rage, she told me. .
