Anybody else take advantage of last weeks prime river levels? 🙋🏾♀️ In the summertime, river levels drop because the weather is hot and dry. Even when it rains, its usually not enough to change river conditions very much. However, when we get a good, ground-saturating rain, that can cause river levels to rise. This is what happened last week, creating fantastic paddling conditions along much of the Buffalo just in time for Labor Day Weekend. Generally, the Upper Buffalo (Ponca area) does not retain water as long as the Middle and Lower sections of the river, so when the river rises, the upper reaches will be the first to fall again. Always #RecreateResponsibly and check current river conditions before you go. It might just save you from taking your boat for a long, long walk. We never in our wildest dreams (or do you want to call it a nightmare?🤔) would have thought that any of our children would be diagnosed with diabetes. It turned into our reality on September 20th 2015 when our 2 1/2 year old son Gavin was diagnosed. Trying to care for a diabetic toddler is not for the faint of heart. I was pregnant for our 3rd child when Gavin was diagnosed. I didnt know how I was going to survive this life caring for a diabetic toddler 24/7/365, a newborn and a 4 year. But like anyone else would do, you figure it out. You survive and you thrive. And thats exactly what Gavin has done the last 5 years. Well, never did we think any of our other children would be dealt this same card since we already had one diabetic kid, right? Wrong. On December 26th 2019, our eldest son Trevor was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 8 1/2 years old. It was a nightmare I was reliving all over again. This diagnosis was 100x harder on me emotionally than the first one was. I didnt think that was even possible. But it was. I didnt understand how this could he happening to our family again. 3 type 1 diabetics in one household. If youre wondering what its like, its craziness and the alarms never seem to stop. But if theres one good thing weve all taken from this is the bond that our 2 boys have because of this lifelong disease. They are absolutely amazing and stronger than I ever imagined they could be and I am honored to be their mother and my husbands wife. They all have a bond that I will never understand and Im so thankful they have each other. We want to extend big ups to the Viking Canoe Club, especially Jessica Turner for an amazing job hosting the 11th Annual Jess Cup Not NPFF Race this past weekend. There were over 70 boats on the water across various disciplines, tons of smiling faces, some carnage, and most of all camaraderie! @hipgravechris of @pyranhaus_official snagged the top spot with a time of 25:53!. Then the Vikings went home with the Jess Cup - certifying themselves as the fast paddling club in Kentucky once again! Not much rowing happening right now across the country, so this is a great shot of one of the workshop elves from 2010. It would end up that music, not rowing, was his true calling, but that doesnt alter the intense focus he brought to the boat that day for his very first row. Whether we spend a few weeks, months, years, or a lifetime in this sport, we all recognize and appreciate the value of doing something well. It just feels so much better to commit to excellence, fleeting as the opportunity may be. Thanks to the bonds of family, the Croker USA workshop is still humming along. We are fulfilling orders of oars for those lucky enough to still have water access, and parts, repairs, and special projects for those who are taking advantage of the temporary lull to address too often waylaid wish lists. If you need something and it can be sorted with deference to all local directives and safe practices, let us know. Los europeos lo vieron por primera vez en 1798. Meses después se mandó la piel de un ejemplar a Inglaterra, para que los científicos lo estudiasen. Cuando les llegó a los naturalistas ingleses pensaron que se trataba de una broma o una falsificación. Taxonómicamente el ornitorrinco pertenece al orden de los monotremas. ¿Y qué son los monotremas? Pues son mamíferos ovíparos, que ponen huevos. Puede medir entre 30 y 60 centímetros de longitud y pesan entre 1 y 2,5 kilogramos los machos y 0,7 y 1,6 kilogramos las hembras. Tiene un pico ancho aplanado, en una cabeza relativamente pequeña. El pico está cubierto por piel lisa. Además, tiene abazones, como los hámsteres (son bolsas de piel en la boca utilizadas para guardar comida). Tiene unas patas cortas, palmeadas con dedos con largas uñas. Posee una cola ancha que se utiliza, entre otras cosas, como almacén de grasa. El ornitorrinco vive en Australia. Concretamente le podemos encontrar la zona este y en Tasmania. Excavan frecuentemente dos madrigueras diferenciadas. Una para las crías y otra para el macho y ella misma. Se trata de un mamífero semiacuático. Pese a que sus madrigueras están en tierra, pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo nadando, actividad para la cual está perfectamente preparado. Una nueva curiosidad del ornitorrinco: tiene en su pico unos electrorreceptores que utiliza para detectar a sus presas. Gracias a estos sensores son capaces de detectar los campos electromagnéticos que generan otros animales. Las hembras carecen de mamas con pezones (una rareza más, y van…). ¿Cómo dan de mamar entonces a las crías? Las glándulas mamarias segregan la leche que se transpira por los poros de la piel. Los machos tienen en las patas traseras un espolón que segrega veneno. No es el único mamífero venenosos, pero sí el único que no secreta el veneno a través de la mordedura.
