THE LEGEND OF BAJI RAO [Heritage India- Vol 2 Issue 2- May 2009] Expert swordsman, outstanding rider, master strategist and leader by example, Baji Rao I succeeded his father as Peshwa when he was only twenty two years of age…launching into an illustrious military career that occupies its own special place in the annals of Maratha history. Baji Rao never lost a battle. Maratha history starts with Shivaji Maharaj establishing a Nation State. Baji Rao took the concept out of Maharashtra to include all India. When he took over as Peshwa, Maratha territorial limits were confined to tracts in Western India. At his death after twenty years in A.D 1740, the Marathas had conquered a large part of Western and Central India and were dominating the South of India upto the peninsula. Though Baji Rao died unable to plant the Maratha flag on the Himalayas as promised, his son Raghunath Rao in A.D.1757 planted the Maratha flag on the fort of Attock and across the Indus river. Peshwa Baji Rao I was a legend during his life time and continues to be so in his passing. His presence remains indelibly marked on the Maratha psyche as it traverses the spaces of time. Shyamasundar Dasa : Once, Prabhupada was in London when I was sleeping outside of his room in Bury Place. I heard in my dreams very faintly, Shyamasundar. I awoke and hit my head on the bunk above me and staggered out. And the door was just opening when I got out, and Prabhupada was standing there, reeling, and then he just collapsed in my arms. My God! I was stunned. I didnt know what in the world to do. I picked him up, and it was like he didnt weigh anything. There was no weight. He felt like a little pillow or something, absolutely no weight whatsoever. And his eyes were closed and gray faced. I went over to his bed and laid him down. He was shivering, so I began to heap blankets over him. And then he opened his eyes and said, Im cold. So I went over and turned the heat up as far as it would go and got some more blankets and covered him up. I just didnt know what to do. I didnt know whether to call a hospital or get an ambulance. And then he said, Bring me some black-pepper paste. He told me how to make it. So I ran down to the kitchen and brought it up and put it on his forehead. He said, Now you just lay down there and sleep. No hospital. So I ran around to the pujaris and woke them up and said, Look, at mangal arati, which is in about an hour, no bells, just quiet, no singing loud. Prabhupada needs to rest. He slept probably five hours or so. He got up, and I slept right on the floor beside him. I didnt really sleep, I dont believe. I think I stayed awake most of the night just watching. His breathing was deep and normal. But even then he wasnt sleeping. Every time I would get really, really worried and look up at him, his eyes would open. Like, Okay, okay. And in the morning he got up and said, It is time for a morning walk and carried on as if nothing happened. Now you tell me where that energy comes from. Is that possible? It is so peacefully hopeful to see photos of early Black Americans in rural farm settings and they’ve become my favorite types of photos to collect. I actually was gifted a similar photo of my great grandfather and his parents that Ill share one day! These types of photos beam with pride at what they accomplished and built with their hands! I image that in this photo, as far as their eyes could see, they saw fields of plenty. Corn, collards, butter beans, okra, squash, and sweet potatoes. Many Black American families in the south owned hundreds of acres in the early 1900’s that allowed them to insulate themselves with self sufficiency and opportunities for generations. Our early #Blackfarmers were some of our first business men and they understood the importance of land and inheritance. For them, land was a source of #freedom. We can only image the constant challenges southern Black farmers of the 19th and 20th centuries, many who had experienced slavery first hand, had to face daily to keep their land. The day to day tasks of planting, reaping, managing debts and taxes before quickbooks and keeping their children connected to the land had to be very challenging. I can imagine the satisfaction they must have felt from working their own land and knowing their toiling was not for the benefit of anyone else except their own families and communities. There had to be great satisfaction that rested in their souls from knowing their land had their FREE blood, sweat and tears embedded in the soil. Some facts regarding the economy of the country during Mughal period. The Indian economy was large and prosperous under the Mughal Empire. 1. During the Mughal era, the gross domestic product (GDP) of India in 1600 was estimated at about 22% of the world economy, the second largest in the world, behind only Ming China but larger than Europe. 2. By 1700, the GDP of Mughal India had risen to 24% of the world economy, the largest in the world, larger than both Qing China and Western Europe. 3. Mughal India was the world leader in manufacturing, producing about 25% of the worlds industrial output up until the 18th century. 4. Indias GDP growth increased under the Mughal Empire, with Indias GDP having a faster growth rate during the Mughal era than in the 1,500 years prior to the Mughal era. 5. Mughal Indias economy has been described as a form of proto-industrialization, like that of 18th-century Western Europe prior to the Industrial Revolution. Considering the economic situation of the country today, I thought of analysing and comparing the Mughal economy with that of the present day Indian economy. The last days of Zeenat Mahal: Zafars favorite wife! Begum Zeenat Mahal, the favorite wife of Bahadur Shah Zafar, spent her final days in exile in Rangoon. She, along with Zafar, was made to stay in a square building made of woods containing four rooms- one for Bahadur Shah Zafar, the second for her, and the other two for the family of two of her sons. After Zafar died in 1862, suffering a paralytic stroke, the British government granted her a monthly stipend of Rs. 120. She remained in detention for another 4 years. On 16 June 1866, release orders were issued for her with the condition that she would continue to stay in Rangoon. Her stipend was also increased to Rs 250 per month. Towards the end of her life, after continued requests citing her old age and satisfactory moral character, her stipend was increased to Rs. 500. Zeenat Mahal became an opium addict in Rangoon- her intake being somewhere around 10 grams per day. She had a constant complaint of indigestion causing severe colic attacks. In 1884, she suffered an acute attack and remained ill till November. Never fully recovering, she complained of severe pain on 8 July 1886, and ran high fever for five days continuously, causing her many sleepless nights. On the eighth day, the pulse began sinking and on 17 July 1886, she breathed her last. She was buried alongside Bahadur Shah Zafars grave in accordance with the wishes of her daughter-in-law, Shah Zamani Begum, and grandson, Jamshed Baksh. The Chief Commissioner gave a grant of Rs. 1000 for her funeral. The Real Story of the Burning of Hampton Part 1: Controversy Then and Now On the night of August 7, 1861, Confederate soldiers under Brig. Gen. John B. Magruder destroyed Hampton by methodically setting fires across the town. The conflagration could be seen for miles, shocking Hampton Roads residents and military personnel alike. U.S. Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, commander of Fort Monroe and U.S. forces in the area, reported that he could not “discern the strategical importance of this movement” and called the burning a “wanton and unnecessary act.” However, Magruder believed burning Hampton would eliminate its “extreme importance” to U.S. forces. Why would Confederates deliberately and violently destroy their own property? Why did Confederates believe burning Hampton was vital to their war effort, while U.S. forces could not identify any strategic motive? Traditionally, the cause of the burning of Hampton is described as an effort to prevent U.S. forces from using the town as winter quarters for troops. However, at the time of the burning, no additional housing was needed for Federal troops stationed nearby, and U.S. Army leaders never had any plans to establish winter quarters at Hampton. Instead, original records show that Magruder’s decision to destroy Hampton stemmed from Butler’s “Contraband” policy and the growing numbers of escaped “Contraband” slaves near Fort Monroe and Hampton. University of Bristol has a great Historical Photographs of China series where we came across these images (reference number: Di-s02) Jack and Bella Hobbs (née Dinsdale) on the balcony of a property, in Bubbling Well Road (now Nanjing Xi Lu), Shanghai. Probably either a Hotel or a Guest House. Detail of the shot shows a European woman maybe a governess, or teacher, standing with a child and an amah. One might assume that “ayah” and “amah” come from an Asian language. It actually derives from the Portuguese ‘aia’ (“nursemaid”), which in turn comes from the Latin ‘avia’ (“grandmother”), just as “amah” is from the Portuguese ama (“nurse”), which descends from the Medieval Latin amma (“mother”), though some suggest it was the Chinese ah ma (“little mother”, “grandmother”). Annual Lok Mela features stalls depicting culture of federating units. National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) has planned to hold Annual Folk Festival Lok Mela from November 6 to 15, a statement said on Thursday. According to an official announcement, Lok Virsa annual event is scheduled from November 6 to 15 at Lok Virsa Complex, Garden Avenue, Shakarparian, Islamabad. The organisers are expecting Federal Minister for Education, Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood to be present on the opening day besides public representatives, celebrities and artistes. The main features will include provincial cultural pavilions from all provinces, besides Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and an international pavilion. The enclosures will show artisans at work, folk songs and dance performances, exotic craft bazaar, cultural nights, folklore performances, food courts, and many other activities. The Palais du Trocadéro was designed by Parisian architect Gabriel Davioud and engineer Jules Bourdais for the 1878 Exposition Universelle (also known as Paris World’s Fair). The fair was held to celebrate the recovery of France after the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. The building was named after the 1823 Trocadéro battle in Spain when French forces captured Isla del Trocadéro. The Trocadéro was designed in a Moorish style with Byzantine elements. The floor plan included a large concert hall with two wings and two 70-meter high towers. It was the largest concert hall ever built at the time. While the public heavily criticized the building, it was not demolished after the fair because of the large amount of money spent toward its construction. The Trocadéro was also reused for the 1900 Exposition Universelle. St. James Church was built by Col. James Skinner in 1823. In 1988, INTACH Delhi Chapter was approached by the Church Committee who had no financial resources to restore the church. With sheer determination to see the process through, INTACH mobilized resources and involved agencies such as Govt. of NCT of Delhi, HM Queen Elizabeth II, British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia, Indian Army Regiment of Skinners Horse (1st Horse), INTACH UK Trust, @britishcouncil, @iccrom_official to undertake the conservation work. By 1999, the project was competed wherein major elements of the #conservation were the #restoration of the cracks in the dome, addressing issues of extensive seepage and badly damaged stained glass windows. 1858, Mirza Jani Beg, Tomb Thatta. Photograph of Mirza Jani Beg’s tomb at Thatta in Sindh, taken by William Robert Houghton in 1858. This image is part of an album documenting notable tombs at the necropolis at Thatta, which Houghton photographed at the request of the Government of Bombay. Jani Beg was a member of the Tarkhan Dynasty (1554-1591) and the last independent ruler of Sindh before its annexation by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1591. He was reinstated as governor of Thatta after his submission and died in c.1599. His mausoleum is an octagonal brick structure with a domed roof in the tradition of Islamic funerary architecture and stands on a terraced platform in a walled enclosure. The tomb is part of a great necropolis, reputedly the largest in the world, which lies on the plateau of the Makli hills, a limestone outcrop to the west of Tatta. The necropolis contains over a million graves, including the mausoleums of Sindh’s rulers.
