THEY CALLED THEM LITTLE COBRAS When U.S. Marines stormed the shores of Guadalcanal in August 1942 in the first major U.S. Pacific offensive of the war, both Americans and Japanese threw whatever nearby air forces they could find into the mix. The result was an ad hoc unit called the Cactus Air Force, after the island’s code name. 🇬🇧 The first monoplane fighter and the first with a top speed of over 483 km/h (300 mph) to enter RAF service was the Hawker Hurricane joining the RAF in December 1937. The Hurricane Mk I with 768-kW (1,030-hp) Rolls-Royce Merlin II and an armament of eight 7.7-mm (0.303-in) machine-guns was Fighter Commands principal fighter in the Battle of Britain in 1940, and destroyed more enemy aircraft than all other defences combined. The Lightning II will be delivered to the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (KLu, Royal Netherlands Air Force) but is facing, together with sistership F-013, some construction issues that have to be solved first. In the meantime, all four F-35As from 323sq, based at Leeuwarden air base (the Netherlands) have flow together on 1 October 2020. The unique annular disc brakes on the 1961 Porsche RS-61L. Porsche designed an alternative disc brake system to minimize the weight penalty associated with switching to one of the “off the shelf” options available at the time. This new system was available as an upgrade to the standard drums and was just two-thirds of a pound heavier. These brake systems were found on Porsche race cars from the early to mid 1960s and were even offered as an option on some of the 356 road cars.
