Sometimes I show up to a wedding - and this has become something of a phenomenon I have come to recognise - I walk in and often have an immediate sense of recognition and familiarity with those I am meeting. While I usually know the couple pretty well by this point, I might be talking to the mother of the groom…and I’m feeling ‘I think I know you’, sometimes I even say ‘have we met before?’. And as the day continues I realise I haven’t, and I use to wonder how it could be. Because there’s such a strong sense of familiarity, it’s uncanny. I recently had the thought, and you might call it ‘instinct’, ‘premonition’, ‘being in tune’… maybe even ‘woo woo’ witchy new age mumbo jumbo! But I’ve started to think - when I have that feeling - ‘by the end of this day, I ***will*** know you as I feel I do now, just exactly as I feel right now’. I’ll have had some good chats, have heard some history, witnessed childhood memories being recalled, and captured true expressions of a lifetime of love. Because this is the nature of weddings, and the depth of sharing that I get to stand by. It seems timely to revisit the @salkinstitute in a period where the world is in a race to develop medicine to save humanity from a fatal disease. The Architecture is highly regarded but it’s place in history is thanks to a noble patron’s medical discoveries. The man is Jonas Salk and the place is La Jolla, California. In the 1950’s people were terrified by Polio. At the time it was the worst epidemic to hit Americans leaving some 25,000 people either dead or with disabling paralysis. Apart from the atomic bomb, Americas greatest fear was polio. Ask your parents or grandparents how the terror of polio parallels what we fear today with Coronavirus. 7 years of trials and 20,000 working physicians later in April 1955, the Polio vaccine was introduced. It almost became a national holiday. Jonas Salk was hailed as a miracle worker. The city of San Diego gifted him a site and in 1960, he founded the Salk Institute and hired Louis Kahn to head the design. Today, walking about the campus is serene. It’s surprisingly in great shape. Concrete holds up! In the central courtyard, a sunken channel of water bisects the two symmetrical towers, leading your gaze towards the infinity of the ocean. Facing West was a grace given to researchers who would spend their years conducting research inside the facilities. Modular to its outward appearance the lines are quite strong, angular, and sharp against the landscape. The building is able to “guess tomorrow” Salk said, because of thoughtful flexibility designed by Kahn: Lack of interior walls to optimize adaptation to research needs and alternating floors for infrastructure and research to prevent disruptions. It is bright and it is airy despite the appearance of heaviness the materials allude. It is inside these types of labs where the future of medicine lives.
