Fellow Ameripolitan’s , you probably know by now we have lost a huge part of our musical family in the passing of James Hand. He opened every Ameripolitan Award Show since it’s inception and was the perfect artist to do so. His musical integrity was unmatchable. His singing and writing were rooted in yesterday but undeniably original. He always had a new song he wrote that he’d like to sing to you and if you were lucky, he did. The world is not as bright today with his loss. The same dimness we had when Johnny, George and Merle passed , I can safely say fellow Ameripolitan’s feel. It was comforting to know we could go see Slim, as he was also known, on any week end in Texas but I’m sure there are many of us that regret the times we could’ve but didn’t. I’m one. I loved James Hand , the artist , the writer , the singer but I also loved the Man. Rest In Peace Slim, but I don’t know how you will when we are going to playing your records loud and proud for a long long long time. Today I keep thinking about Bill Wittliff, Gus McCrae and how a grape ripens when it sees another grape. “Uva uvam varia vivendo fit” is on Capt. Gus McCrae’s sign for the Lonesome Dove Ranch. The motto is never explained, it’s just there. The joke is that Gus claims to know Latin (and a lot of other languages), but his knowledge is tenuous at best. The direct translation is garbled, and I like to think about it a lot. It translates, “a grape changes its color (ripens) when it sees another grape.” If you think about the story and how each character transforms, you could take it as, “we are changed by the lives around us.” Lonesome Dove is such a weird book. It is weird that I still think about it and want to share it all the time (somebody get this kid to a book club). And it is kinda weird that it means so much to so many Texans - for some, there’s the Bible, and then there’s Lonesome Dove. It’s ostensibly about cowboys at the end of the Wild West- and it very much is, in the best and most entertaining, complicated way- but people see a lot of themselves, or their family, or their friends in these characters. I love that so many people see themselves in the story, like I do. Or, they want to be like some of the people in the story, like I do. Or, they haven’t read it yet, but they’ll love it, and I’ll bother them until they do (message me and I will buy you the book)! They’re the kind of people I like to hang around. It is a great look at two likeable outlaws, full of witty dialogue and exciting action sequences. Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) are two bank robbers, chased by the law. The plot follows them as they travel to Bolivia after a railroad president hires a posse to hunt them do. The story is mostly composed of short pieces telling a little story about them. There is really no connection all the way through, for the most part. The story isnt about the plot, however. It is about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It is a close look at two criminals, the talented Sundance Kid, and Butch Cassidy, the one who does all the thinking. The charisma and screen presence of the two actors and the way they work together is what drives the film. Watching the two interact, with a superb script full of great dialogue, is what makes this movie so exciting. See this movie if you are a fan of westerns, or just a fan of good movies.
