I’ve been lost in my thoughts on how to express how I feel. I have cried from the memories of a confused little me trying to fit in. I kept thinking I’d share stories so more people could understand the personal racist things I’ve gone through my entire life, and the more I talk to other black people I realize we all have those stories and I know our parents do too. I will share with you that I don’t feel comfortable to have my natural hair out in my hometown because of someone laughing at it in grade 6. So every time I go home to this day I am not comfortable in my own skin. I have gone to parks as a kid and got called names for the color of my skin, I have played sports and been whispered names in my ear for the color of my skin, I have had professors accuse me of cheating because of the color of my skin, I have had, I have had, I have had ENOUGH! This is why I am fighting! I will fight and fight until this is better. I know there has to be a change so we can’t give up. If you’ve been posting, talking about this, walking the streets with us, donating or signing petitions then don’t give up. There has to be a change and there will be when we don’t give up! This has been a long fight so it will continue to be a long one. We need you in a month, as we will need you in a year too! If we can’t agree on basic human rights then I don’t want you here! The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. On November 6, 1919, the world’s first scheduled radio broadcast services known as PCGG began in Rotterdam, Netherlands. By the 1920s, half of urban families owned a radio and more than six million stations had been built. In the 1940s, families were listening to their radios hourly. Entertainment like music and sporting events could now be heard by anyone with a radio and gave accessibility to those who could not afford to see live events. The radio greatly impacted African Americans by giving access to entertainment that they were barred from seeing in person due to segregation laws. In the late 1940s, 94 percent of African American homes had at least one radio set, where families would listen to popular broadcasters such as Hal Jackson, who is known as the “first African American announcer on network radio,” as well as the 1940s radio series called Destination Freedom, which aired on a local Chicago NBC station. Destination Freedom was created by Richard Durham who wanted to create a narrative of African American history and bring to light African American poets, journalist, and labor organizers. Not only did radio shows such as Jackson’s and Durham’s provide political and social arguments and narratives, the radio also played an essential role in the Civil Rights Movement, where disc jockeys would relay information through radios on where roadblocks were, where the next boycott was taking place, and in protecting African Americans from misleading propaganda. Presently in 2020, we see the importance and influence of social media, radio, and television in relaying information on how to support one another. It is important to MOAH that our museum continues to show and connect the evolution, influence, and relevance of historic innovations to the technologies and society of the past and present. To our Cleveland Community, We are saddened by the senseless death of George Floyd and so many others before him. We cannot begin to understand the pain, anguish and hopelessness that these events bring up and all too often. We have such great respect for those who do their civic duty by voicing these emotions, particularly their anger, publicly. For the past 20 years we’ve been working to build a diverse and community driven neighborhood in the heart of the city of Cleveland. We’ve housed residents of diverse backgrounds, employed hundreds of Clevelanders and tried to inject new life into what not long ago was a forgotten alley in the city. The destruction of this past weekend is born of pain. It is understandable in this often unforgiving society we live in. As residents and developers of the city of Cleveland we vow to redouble our efforts to continue to build community, create jobs, and most importantly listen to one another. We hope that these actions help drive the change our society desperately needs. Lastly, a special note of thanks to all those who came out to help clean up on Sunday morning. As we watch fellow small-business owners close up their shops, restaurants, and other establishments, we’re seeing a look of terror about what the future holds for them, their businesses, and their employees. 
Our city, nation, and world are in crisis. Going out to restaurants, buying a new pair of shoes, or attending a concert is not only impossible, it’s the last thing on all our minds. But the problem is this: many of your favorite small businesses – the ones you patronize and support daily, won’t be able to survive this complete stoppage for long. If we all put on the brakes, many of these establishments simply won’t be there to re-open their doors when the time comes. 
So what can we all do? 
Support the small businesses you love in any way you can. Order take-out from your favorite restaurant. Buy a gift certificate from your hairdresser. Order some records from your favorite band. Shop online from your favorite store. These things might seem like they can wait, they might even seem crass at a time like this. But in fact, they are incredibly important acts of support that we should all be considering NOW. Because seriously, a few weeks from now might be too late. 
Over these coming weeks, we’ll be doing our part to support our favorite local businesses, while doing everything in our power to protect the jobs of our own team of three employees.
