Public Enemy opened for Beastie Boys on License To Ill Tour and they came out strong…I loved them ever since… “Fear Of A Black Planet” was when I really started to listen to Chuck D’s lyrics in a political sense and I began to understand things were being purposefully done to U.S . citizens outside of my white, suburb bubble… I loved the energy from the beginning but the lyrics and message started to resonate with me the longer I sat with them and memorized them…Chuck sounded fed up.. He sounded angry and empowered… which fed right into my teenage skater angst… Chuck D’s music helped me look around and start questioning the systems of power that I took for granted. He really wants to make music that matters and has a message and that is why his music will continue to be relevant for generations to come. One of Chuck D’s fellow teachers/lyricists/poets/profits/musicians/etc. is KRS-ONE from Boogie Down Productions and he is another huge influence on me and how I grew up. He and Chuck saw eye-to-eye on a lot of social issues and it felt fitting to have some of the most impactful lyrics from that era of hip hop incorporated into my work. Heartbreaking new information from @agirlhasnopresident with updated info from @platinumpurp: Please share ❤️ This is #elijahmcclain murdered by Aurora, CO PD officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, & Randy Roedema. Massage therapist Elijah McClain walked home with an iced tea & ski mask when the officers approached. Officers immediately moved to intimidation & threats while Elijah begged for mercy, saying he was “going home” & to “please respect my boundaries”. He’d been wearing a ski mask to shield him from the cold due to his anemia. The officers slammed him to a wall, wrestled him to the ground & performed a “carotid choke hold”. All 3 officers “lost their cameras” in the “struggle”. They lied for the sake of audio claiming, “He grabbed for your gun, dude.” Elijah was handcuffed & vomiting when paramedics were called. Jeremy Cooper & a female paramedic administered ketamine without checking in with Elijah - taking at face value the lie that he needed sedation for “violent behavior”. After being tortured & verbally abused while fire & additional police looked on & paramedics assisted in the murder, Elijah suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance. It is alleged that paramedics didn’t resuscitate Elijah for 2 minutes, which could be the cause of his brain damage which led to a coma. Elijah’s toxicology report showed 1400 mg of ketamine in his system - according to America drug enters.org 680 mg if ketemjne is lethal for 130 pound individual. Elijah was 140lbs. Aurora Chief Nick Metz & a corrupt coroner backed up the officers’ lies with false statements about the audio & video which helped 12+ people get away with the murder of Elijah McClain. DA Dave Young just issued a statement saying he intends to ignore our petition to reopen the case despite nearly 1 million signatures. Yesterday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced the grand jury’s decision in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor. Sadly, none of the Louisville Police Department officers involved in the fateful shooting were charged with her death. Instead, the Grand Jury returned an indictment for a lesser charge of wanton endangerment against one of the three police officers. The other two were not charged. There are no words to adequately express the depth of our collective disappointment by this announcement. Alpha Kappa Alpha stands in solidarity with our members in the Central Region, particularly those residing in the center of this controversy in the City of Louisville. After pressing for an indictment for months, all of us had hoped that the outcome would be different and that justice would be served. However, despite what this latest decision would lead us to believe, our lives do matter. We must continue our fight for justice and remain vigilant in demanding policies that protect our civil rights and extend to us the same protections of the law that all American citizens are guaranteed under the Constitution. Today is yet another reminder of the reason that elections are important. The outcome of the upcoming election will affect the lives of future generations. We must stay the course. We must continue our work to ensure that everyone we can touch is registered to vote and that all votes are counted. Let us turn our disappointment into action in honor of Breonna Taylor, and, as we continue to say her name, work fervently to make a change through the power of the ballot. You are so much fucking more than what you do. So much more than your degrees. Your worth isn’t determined by your immigration status, your vacation pics, your “IG likes” nor your plant game. . When I was coming up I was consistently told that I was “being lazy” if I rested. Meaning whether I was reading, watching a show or talking to friends on the phone. To this day, my Momz, who has worked multiple jobs her whole life while, will say “I am being so lazy today I just want to sit here and watch a show.” I lovingly correct her & remind her that nothing about her is “lazy” & that she is so much more than her labor. Particularly as a Black bodied woman. . And I internalized it all man. If I was too sick for school I would be told to “get up & work hard because my ancestors died for me to go to school.” Damn talk about guilt. Conditioning. Lies. And is that true? My Ancestors- many if not all- died trying to get some Fucking PEACE. Yes, they thought about future generations here & there. But mostly, survival. Survive & get through another day. Feed the kids for the week. Work these extra jobs for the next 5 months. Follow these directions, keep your head down & I can save my family’s life. . As a psychologist I have been TRAINED & BRAINWASHED to obey these arbitrary rules that are supposed to help my clients & I - feel & be contained. To feel safe. To have better boundaries. But the truth is: it’s a lie. Mental health practitioners in particular hold so much power, AND we are burned the fuck out, constantly. It can be both. Because our emotional labor is not seen as LABOR. Yet we contain & hold intense emotions for 10 hours straight, sometimes 24/7. Mental health also pathologizes collective activity. Multiple families living together; Community-centered childcare; group healing/ counseling & protesting. Esp when BIPOC people are concerned. The very things that bring about the antidote to settler colonization, imperialism, and white supremacy= connection, joy & community. Je suis si bien entourée pour ma 19eme année. Je suis fière de la personne que je suis aujourd’hui, d’être restée fidèle à mes principes et mes valeurs peu importe à quel point ça pouvait être compliqué avec les difficultés de la vie (trahisons etc). My anxious and nervous self spoke at the March on Washington 😳 I didn’t even tell my family I would be speaking and honestly since it was the pre program , did not know it would be filmed outside of NAN’s streaming service. I got so many surprising sweet messages from you all that you saw me or are proud. Thank you all for your kind words. It’s definitely difficult navigating this movement as a young Black women but I will continue to take up space and make sure this time this movement is intersectional and inclusive of all Black lives, including my trans sisters.
