🔸Simo Häyhä, the deadliest sniper of history🔸 🔸The Awakening of THE legend In 1925, Häyhä was drafted for a year of military service. He displayed his military prowess early on and after only one year had already advanced to the rank of Corporal. Later, Häyhä joined the Finnish Civil Guard and discovered his talent and passion for shooting. He reportedly spent all his free time outside practicing his shots. Eventually he could hit 16 targets per minute from 500 feet, making him ideal as a sniper in the war which was fast approaching. 🔸When the war broke out The Winter War began in Finland in 1939, when Russia took the opportunity to regain the territory that had once been theirs. The Russian army probably assumed that such a tiny country like Finland would be easy to take. What they didn’t count on was the Finnish concept of ‘sisu’, which roughly translates to ‘guts’ or ‘determination’. Häyhä’s skills were put to good use against such overwhelming odds. At one point, he and 31 other Finnish men faced off against 4000 Soviet soldiers. 🔸The White Death Though the Winter War lasted only around 100 days, Häyhä managed 500 confirmed kills during that time, and his unofficial total may be as high as 800, a record which has yet to be matched. His personal best was 40 confirmed kills in a single day. Häyhä managed this thanks to military tactics that were unheard of at the time. Dressing in white camouflage allowed him to blend in with the winter scenery and he only carried a day’s worth of supplies, so that he wouldn’t be weighed down. He piled up snow banks around himself for concealment and put snow in his mouth to prevent his breath from giving him away. Rejecting more modern and advanced models, he used his own gun (a Finnish Sako Mosin-Nagant Model 28-30 rifle) with an iron sight instead of a scope, as he claimed that scopes could catch glare from sunlight and be spotted by enemy snipers. He knew his gun well enough to maintain it even during one of the coldest Finnish winters on record. Partner: @the_irish_historian - @the_eyes_of_history on Instagram

As we enter the month of June in South Africa, we remember and honour the youth of South Africa who died for our freedom. Annually, WCTA has held grassroots tournaments to honour those who paved the way and gave their lives for a democratic South Africa. These are uncertain times we live in but one thing we are certain of...WCTA has never ever forgotten that we play our sport in a democratic society because it was hard fought for. Never forget. #wcta #grassroots #🔴⚪🔵 #islandersahoo - @western_cape_touch on Instagram

Mabo Day. Today, marks the 28th Anniversary of the Mabo decision. On this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia legally recognised the Meriam people as the rightful owners of Mer Island. I know some people today may feel a mixture of emotions in light of recent and past events. I know despite it all, you will continue to be strong, black and proud people of Zenadth Kes. I just wanted to say, that today marks the day that a Meriam Man, Eddie Koiki Mabo, changed the nation. Today marks the day that Meriam Men, Reverend David Passi, Sam Passi, James Rice, and Meriam Woman, Celuia Mapo Salee, changed the nation. Today marks the day that the Meriam people changed the nation. Today marks the day that people of the Zenadth Kes, changed the nation. So whatever purpose you choose to pursue over your lifetimes, never forget that your actions matter and that you can make changes. Talei Elu Faces of the Straits - @facesofthestraits on Instagram

To our community, Black lives matter. The fact that this statement is considered controversial in some circles is just one of the many things that needs to change. Record stands in solidarity with those protesting around the world against systemic racism, police brutality, and white supremacy. We recognize the music industry is not exempt from these problems. Without action, we cannot move forward. We realize that everyone has their own way of contributing at a time like this, whether through donations, through protest or petitions, or change on a personal level. Record will be donating 100% of profits from our merchandise for the next month, split evenly between 12 groups fighting for racial justice, including Black Lives Matter Global Network, National Bail Out, and Color of Change Education Fund. You can also donate to these organizations directly at link in bio. We sincerely hope these times will be a marker of change. This bandsman’s uniform is a reproduction that was once worn by the Fort Henry Guard fifers during the 1950’s and 1960’s.  The white tunics were worn by the Fort Henry Guard fifers during the nineteen fifties and sixties. Eventually, research revealed that historically, the fifers were actually classed as drummers (not bandsmen) and that the Corps of Drums paraded with drums and fifes during the1860s and well into the twentieth century. As such, the fifers should have been wearing the same uniform as the drummers. Historically, the band paraded separately from the Drums in British regiments, but the Fort Henry Guard never actually mounted a band, the cost of historic instruments being too prohibitive. The switch from the inaccurate white tunics to the historically correct red drummers tunics took place in the late 1960’s.  #BringYourThingAtHome #ygkTogetherAtHome #KingstonMuseums #FortHenry - @kingstonmuseums on Instagram

A response to Desean Jackson. Evoking the words of Hitler -- and in this case fictitious words-- to sow division between the black and jewish communities is offensive and counter-productive to the progress we desperately need. There was a golden age of Black and Jewish activist collaboration we should strive to re-create, not impede. Growing up in the Jewish community I was keenly aware of the prejudice, discrimination, violence, and genocide that sadly shapes our history. If there are two groups of people who should be bonded in the trauma of their histories and struggle for equality, there couldn’t be a more natural partnership than us. Here are some historical examples of I’m proud of: - Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel side by side with MLK at the march on Selma 1965 (pictured above) -Henry Moskowitz, co-founder of the NAACP -Kivie Kaplan, national president of the NAACP from 1966 to 1975 -St Augustine Florida, June 18, 1964: 15 Rabbis were arrested and jailed for praying in front of an integrated restaurant sit-in and protest. Our enemy should be racism, not one another. Lets strive to eradicate our shared enemy and bring our communities closer. - @zekethemayor on Instagram

In the light of the black lives protest around the world, I have tried to understand why America cannot coexist with Black people. Blacks are very resourceful and contribute to economic growth wherever they find themselves. I have also tried to understand why racism is the only thing that has refused change. In the 60s Dr Martin Luther king and a host of others tried to address this issue during the civil rights movement. Times have changed America, I thought you knew. From Amadou Diallo to Trevor Martin, NOW George Floyd. Over and over again the same thing keeps repeating itself and you tell us to move on, you tell us that let all that is lost be forgotten. No, enough is enough. For days, I have been thinking of a way to respond to this issue of racism, then I found inspiration in Micheal Jacksons Black or white video. Micheal address this issue by featuring every race in the world, delivering a message of hope that no matter who you are, you can be my friend, my brother, my sister, my lover. I decided to respond visually with my work on the black body, but this time around there is twist a in the tale. #documentaryphotography #insideafrica #myafrica #africa #contemporaryart #photoreportage #monafrique #thenleleinstitute #thenlele #hausderkunst #kunst #jeuneafrique #lemondefr #fotogiornalismo #photojournalisme #Afrika #kunstler #kunstafrika #ochristophernelson #fotoperiodismo #photojournalism #blacklivesmatter #georgefloyd #stiftungkunst #visualstorytelling #Lagos #humanity #anewhumanity #Afriquesaison2020 #kunstafrika - @ochristophernelson on Instagram

#Confucio #Confucianismo #Filosofo #Filosofia #China #Asia #Historia - @historylatam on Instagram

KALINGA BELIEFS: Their Deities, Cosmos, and the Shaman’s Call View entire article at https://www.aswangproject.com/ The supreme deity is Kabunyan, sometimes called Kadaklan, ”The Greatest. ” By derivation Kabunyan means ”those to whom offerings are made,” ”those for whom it is killed.” Below Kabunian there are various lesser deities: KiDul is the god of thunder. KiLat is the god of lightning. Sun and moon occupy no important position. Some informants say that they are not regarded as gods at all. The moon, however, gives omens. DumaNig is a demon which possesses the moon (Bolan) and causes her to devour her husband the sun (Ageo) NamBisayunan is the howl or shriek that is heard during a storm. Libo-o d Ngatu, ”Clouds of the Skyworld ” cause sickness. Maman are beings derived from a second death of souls in the Afterworld; they are perceptible in red light, as on a rainy day near sunset. They may cause sickness. Bungun ts the god of the rainbow. The mamlindao are hunting spirits. The bulaiyao live in big rocks, hot springs, and volcanoes. They have a fiery appearance which they can turn on or turn off. They capture or devour souls. Dumabag is the god of the volcano at Balatok. Lumawig is the local god of the Mangali-Lubo-Tinglaiyan district. The Angako d Ngato are demons that afflict with sickness. The Angtan are goddesses or demons that depress men, bring worry and bad luck. The aLan are cannibal or ghoul spirits that figure largely in myths and folktales as carrying away or devouring souls and as producing many kinds of transformations in men and in themselves. The anitu are the souls of the dead. The Kalinga cosmos consists of five regions: Pita, the earth; Ngato, the skyworld; Dalum di pita, the underworld; Daiya or Suyung, the upstream region; and Lagod, the downstream region. The priesthood is almost entirely in the hands of women. Entry into it is always in answer to a “call”, and is in a sense, compulsory: the woman begins to sleep badly, has many dreams, grows thin, lacks appetite, believes that her soul has married an anitu and that she can extricate herself from the condition only by becoming a priestess (mangaalisig). - @theaswangproject on Instagram

Happy Birthday Founder John Milton Lee! Lee was a scholar, loyal and tireless worker for the growth of the Fraternity and because of his idealist character was commonly referred to as ‘a dreamer’, was born in Danville, Indiana on September 7, 1890 and was the third of four children. He attended public schools in Danville and enrolled at Indiana University in 1910. He completed three years of pre-medical work before leaving the university. In 1914, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania but withdrew for health reasons. In 1915, he became a student at Temple University but was compelled to leave due to a death in the family. Lee enlisted in the Army in 1917. He was a non-commissioned officer assigned to Battery F, 349th Field Artillery Regiment, 167th Field Artillery Brigade of the 92nd Division. The Division organized at Fort Dix (New Jersey) in November 1917. The Field Artillery component was the first Negro Artillery Regiment in the history of the military. Lee subsequently served overseas as a Sergeant First Class and Gunner. His battery enjoys the unique distinction of having been the first Battery of Negro Artillerymen ever to open fire upon an enemy. He was an associate editor of Modern Artillerymen, the official record of Battery F. Lee helped organize, and for several years was president of the Fairview Golf Club, the first Negro Golf Club in Pennsylvania. For two years, he was the editor of The Golfer, the monthly publication of the Fairview Golf Club. In 1931, he was married to Mary Walker Robinson. Vocationally, he was engaged in several enterprises. For eight years, Lee conducted a successful catering business in Philadelphia; he organized and served as Vice-President and Secretary of the Mutual Emergency Union, a mutual aid company in Philadelphia. He was also a member of the Board of Managers of the Columbia Community Branch of the YMCA. Lee was a close confidant of Founder Diggs and was a source of comfort when Diggs lost his first wife. He contributed greatly to vision and development to the fraternity in its early years. The articles of incorporation listed Lee as the Secretary of Kappa Alpha Nu. - @kapsi1911 on Instagram

Gold Star Mothers Day is intended to honor, support, and show gratitude to Gold Star Mothers and their families. Today, a gold star symbolizes a son, daughter, husband, or wife who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces. ⁣ ⁣ After WWI, the American Gold Star Mothers’ Association began to lobby for federally funded pilgrimages to visit the graves of their sons and husbands who were buried overseas. ⁣ ⁣ It wasn’t until 1929 that an act of Congress made possible the organized pilgrimages to the grave sites in Europe. The U.S. government paid the travel expenses for widows and mothers with the first group of pilgrims embarking on their journey in May of 1930. When the program ended in October of 1933, 6,693 women had made the trip.⁣ ⁣ Have you lost a family member in the Armed Forces? ⁣ ⁣ Credit: National Archives⁣ #GoldStarMother #GoldStar #WorldWarII - @pacificwarmuseum on Instagram

The uprising that began with the murder of George Floyd is not only about police violence. Broadly speaking, it is also a response to a political and economic system that treats the poor and the marginalized, disproportionately people of color, as social refuse. Ya basta! 1st november 1984: the indian government declared a genocide of sikhs with a goal of killing the maximum number of sikhs in punjab. men, women, children all taken out of trains, buses or their homes by mobs and either shot, beaten, raped, set on fire or had acid poured on them. the aim of this post is just to bring awareness of the subtle form of extinction the indian government continue to use since before this genocide to wipe out the strong history and current impact of the sikhs. clearly this is not the way forward and therefore i and many other people hope that everyone in this world will acc be united and not divided. #sikhgenocide84 #6daysofterror #worldagainsthatred #neverforget84 #khalistanzindabad #justiceforsikhs - @anikawouhra on Instagram

Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. Braids are regarded as a cultural trait of the African people as well as they also can be a fashion statement. The history and tradition of African hair braiding within tribes, and the cultural significance of braiding is deep and long. While the Maasai and Zulu are among the biggest tribes of Africa, each tribe has its own culture and traditions related to hair braiding. The hairstyles are unique and used to identify each tribe, they also indicate a person’s community, age, marital status, wealth, power, social position, and religion.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ So when it comes to traditions related to braiding generally - specific patterns are done for special occasions like weddings, social ceremonies or war preparations. People belonging to a tribe can easily be identified by another tribe member with the help of a braid pattern or style. Emphasis on the importance of how the braids are done is also is given. The person who braids hair performs it as both a ritual and a social service with no rewards expected. It is an art form taught by a senior female member of the family to her daughters and close female friends. The person who braids well is considered an expert.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Across certain cultures, it is believed that if a woman has thick hair, she will have many children, farms and riches. Loose hair on the other hand indicates filth, untidiness even or mourning. Walking around with loose hair is generally regarded as inappropriate. The items used for braiding include palm oil or shea butter or argan oil and can take several hours or even days to finish.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ A lot of the history and customs of African braiding was lost due to slave trade to a certain extent, but also as the generations went by. ⠀ Did you know that enslaved Africans used to hide escape maps from slavery in their hairstyles and braids?⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Source⠀ https://www.brighthubeducation.com/social-studies-help/121031-cultural-significance-of-hair-braiding-in-african-tribes/ - @africandiaries_ on Instagram

@meg.beez & @gavintotallyrules had the privilege of chatting with @colinkerigan for the @bringmusichome project about the impact of COVID on independent venues like ours @wowphilly. If its within your means, snag a poster & support your city’s heartbeat. #Repost @bringmusichome ・・・ We’re headed to Philly for our next #BringMusicHome poster! It was created by Kate Otte (@kateohhtay), a designer and illustrator whose work spans a variety of disciplines, including branding, hand lettering, environmental graphics, interpretive signage, & wayfinding strategy. She is best known for Drawn Jawn, a Philadelphia-themed coloring book that celebrates & pokes fun of the citys landmarks, culture & quirks. She has designed posters for bands, films, music festivals, & community organizations across the city. Some of her other noteworthy projects include an 80-foot laser cut history wall at Philadelphias Rail Park; & a dog and cat-shaped typographic mural; & illustrations of green tools like rain gardens, stormwater planters, & tree trenches for the Philadelphia Water Department. Kate is currently developing a board game inspired by rock climbing, @FirstAscentGame. Kate’s inspiration for this poster: I wanted this poster to capture the energy of Philadelphias music scene. Our community is vibrant, diverse, & rooted in the spirit of improvisation & creative freedom – We make our music in old mausoleums, welcome legends to resurrected theatres, thrash in batting cages & church basements, cram into narrow bars, & go clubbing in unassuming warehouses. We busk on street corners, perform opera upon trapezes suspended from a bridge, march through the streets with Elmo, play radiators at house shows, create disco dance parties with orchestral instruments, sing about getting parking tickets & rap about allergies. Just as music shows up in unexpected places & unconventional ways, I wanted this poster—riddled with portraits, visual puns, elements of album covers and nods to song lyrics—to provide a similar element of discovery.” Preorder yours at @fsgprints today! At 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 31, 1989, Ida Lee Delaney was driving to her job as a custodian at the Houston Post. Three off-duty, drunk plainclothes officers in an unmarked car later said she had cut them off on the Gulf Freeway, and they responded by chasing her for 13 miles through the city. She had no way of knowing they were police, so she was obviously fearing for her life. The officers later said she shot at them from the car. When she saw a work crew she pulled over, apparently to seek help. One officer went to her car brandishing a gun and punched her. She shot and wounded him, and he shot and killed her. * She was my husband’s Aunt Ida. She was 50 when she died. The officer who shot her had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, almost twice the level to be considered legally drunk in Texas at the time. * The three officers were fired, and two were not charged. The trial of the one who killed her was moved to Dallas because a judge decided it couldn’t be fair in Houston after all the outcry and publicity. The jury was all white. Don Smyth, assistant Harris County district attorney, said, “We think they’ll do a fine job. As we’ve been telling everybody else, this is not a racial case. Some folks are trying to make it a racial case.” * The jury convicted Alex Gonzales of voluntary manslaughter, and he could have faced up to a 20-year sentence. He got seven years, but the conviction was overturned on appeal. According to one report, he spent a grand total of 11 days in jail. #blacklivesmatter - @joeyonan on Instagram

Reading Baldwin’s work helped me understand that I had to humble myself. Once you let go of certain dogma, and once you deal with your bigotry, or you disconnect your being from a party or a label or a slogan and you’re down to just yourself, that’s what becomes fascinating to me. It gets down to what kind of human being you want to be on this planet. That’s where things can be transformative. —@officialmeshell, qtd. in @tidal Explore the September release of Chapter & Verse: The Gospel of James Baldwin. #AnnaPark l Opening on October 3rd at our gallery space in Rome, ‘On Tilt’, Anna Park’s inaugural solo exhibition at T293 and in Europe. Using charcoal as her main medium, Anna Park creates overwhelming scenes in which she constantly puzzles our brain to decode the source of the endless imagery containing in each work. Constantly playing with the limits between abstraction and representation, her works invites us into another dimension, focusing its attention on the anomalies of our contemporary society. In compliance to the current situation, the opening of the exhibition will happen from 13-19pm on Saturday, October 3, following the indicated measures of personal security. During the mid 1700s, one of the first Black women activist emerged. Her name was Phillis (Phyllis) Wheatley (Wheatly) and she wrote poetry, essays and letters denouncing slavery and the discrimination against Africans who’d been transported to America. 263 years later myself, @ashleyjsharpton, @nialahedari, @thechelseamiller, @theniawhite, @kyravalley, @angelarmyerssr, @nupol_justice, @liviarosejohnson, @itskiarawilliams, @sophiee_michel, @cherishluvsyou and SO MANY OTHER BLACK WOMEN who I have not named are STILL doing the work! Calling for liberation of Black people. So honored to be doing this work amongst those who have been doing this for decades and those who are still in HS but know the importance of what we demand. This Sunday I am calling and challenging ALL Black MEN to come out and support the Black Womxn’s March this Sunday!!! Too often are Black women overlooked during these times and it is more important now, than ever that Black Womxn are supported by Black Men. I hope to see you all there. - @msfatimahbarrie on Instagram

Open for appointment viewing starting TODAY! On view: DESCENDANTS OF SIRE by #BrightworkFellow Clarence Heyward. Private appointments can be made at the link in our bio through September 26. . Excerpt of Exhibition Statement written by Courtney Napier @courtney.has.words DESCENDANTS OF SIRE is Clarence Heyward’s visual album punctuating the journey to understand his identity as a Black American. SIRE is a double entendre implying both elevated social status and a beast of burden kept for breeding. With the portrait as the primary format, Heyward’s metamorphosis becomes evident in his quest to understand what W.E.B. Du Bois identifies as the Black American’s “double consciousness.” In his preeminent book, The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois describes this internal conflict, “an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings....” . I know Ive shared this before, though it has been crossing my mind this week multiple times. The story that intrigued me most while researching cornrows was the story of Benkos Bioho, an African Prince who escaped slavery in Colombia. Bioho created his own language and intelligence network where women would create maps and deliver messages through their hair. Enslaved Africans would do this to leave plantations and the home of their captors. The history of cornrows can be found in Africa for women at least 3000 B.C. For men, particularly in Ethiopia, as far back as the nineteenth century. Cornrows were used to indicate your kingship, status, age, religion identity and so forth. An ancient form of self expression. To me, cornrows are a intricate form of art which connects me to my culture. My hair symbolises overcoming the prejudice and struggles I personally have faced regarding braided hairstyles. It took me years to find my hair beautiful due to lack of representation and discrimination. It can not be denied, blacks had to fight for the right to wear cornrows. When non black people wear it, to me, it erases all history. - @faoubiera on Instagram

Chef Edna Lewis was born in Freetown, Virginia, a farming community settled by emancipated slaves that included her grandparents, Chester and Lucinda. Lewis’s childhood orbited around food production and preparation. Her family and neighbors worked cooperatively toward self-sufficiency, an achievable goal—save a few staples such as coffee and sugar—in a pre-industrial South. Lewis was an utter perfectionist when it came to testing the recipes for her books, throwing away attempts that didn’t live up to her memories. Some recipes she only tested when she went back to Virginia to visit her sister Jenny, who lived on a farm not far from where Freetown had been. For others, she obsessively tracked down the freshest, most historically accurate ingredients she could find. #chefedblackhistory - @chefedharris on Instagram

Every month is black history month for me but today marks the start of Black History Month 2020 in the UK. Last year I shared daily IG stories on black achievers, this year I am publishing my personal love letter to the unparalleled culture of black hair, fashion, and costume. I intend to delve into the history of fashionable sub-cultures & creations, pay homage to some of the trailblazers and discuss how my own work has been influenced by historical pieces. 🖤 I am kicking it off with my first blog, ‘Traditional African Braided Crowns’. Many thanks to the amazing IG account, @in.hair.itance for the use of some of your beautiful images as reference material.
