I’m saddened by the events that have transpired these past few days, for so many reasons. It hurts to see the black community hurting like this. It hurts to see civilians and peaceful protestors getting maced, beaten, and pushed down for using their voice and freedom of speech. It hurts to see small shops go up in flames due to the rioting and looting, but none of that compares to how much it hurts to continuously see innocent black lives being taken away by power hungry police. In no way does this piece condone the looting of small businesses and riots, but I understand even those things are just byproducts of years of oppression and pent up anger. When the peaceful protesting doesn’t do the job what else do you expect. If you’re not using your voice right now and you have the platform to do so. You’re also in the wrong. I have too many friends and followers that could be in the same place as one of those 101 names I wrote and I’d be stupid to think that I couldn’t be one of those too. The senseless killing needs to end and the ones killing us need to be held accountable for their crimes including the ones who stand back and watch. RIP George Floyd and so many others lost. You death won’t be in vain. We need to put an end to the abuse of power. To those protesting out there stay safe and be strong. What a blessing it was to dodge my demise at the beginning of the decade. I couldn’t lay down for 4 months. Bounced back. Traveled. Finished college. Moved to NYC. Managed a full North American tour and multiple festivals for a major label artist. Fell in love. Landed a job with one of the big four advertising agencies working on one of the biggest brands in the world. Along the way I became friends with my lovely parents. I’ve watched my baby sister grow up to be a wonderful young woman. I met remarkable people that believed in me, trusted me, and empowered me. Sadly, I also lost my childhood dog, my 2 great friends Taron and Mauricio, and recently, my brilliant, accomplished, and loved Grandfather. The days where I feel that I can accomplish anything are contested by the days I just want to waste time by the water enjoying the view. The overwhelming support for black lives matter over the course of the past few days has been amazing. Theres still such a long way to go but having these tough conversations and actively making moves to combat racism is the only way for us to get there. There is footage of cops going on the offensive unprovoked. Brick palettes are suddenly showing up on every street corner. Rubber bullets are being aimed above the chest. They are not there to maintain the peace, in many cities they are being placed to ensure there isnt any. This needs to change and addressing police reform is one of those conversations we so desperately need to be having. If nothing else, I encourage you to at least read up on Open Record Acts in your state. Only 12 states have public or available-upon-request police misconduct records. 12. Accountability is not a ridiculous thing to ask for from the people we depend on to keep our society in check. Too many have been abusing power & operating behind the blue wall of silence. & yes, there are good cops. But why do we tolerate even one bad cop? Let alone give them nearly 20 chances before getting one off the street? This tolerance comes at the cost of lives. We are beyond asking how many innocent black Americans have to die for change to come? One was already too many. The system is inherently flawed & the true tell of model police officers in the coming days will be which ones back the push for change. Showing up to protests & standing with the protestors is a great step & certainly a welcoming sign of hope BUT it means absolutely nothing if when time comes for new legislation they are not there to back the change in policies that hold their own accountable. Accountability/open records is of course not a 100% solution, but its a step in the right direction. Read up on your local laws & have expectations in mind for positive change. Alongside vocalizing our support, marching, donating, posting online in solidarity, I encourage you to think about what we can do to solidify the change socially or legislatively. Well here we go.... last night I was involved in a hit and run collision on the Interstate headed home from work. A truck hauling a long trailer with a tractor got over in my lane as I was coming up on it and I collided with the back corner of the trailer. Afterwards he drove away from the scene. It was scary but by the grace of God I came away injury free but my car is totaled. I was in another serious accident 2 years ago headed home from a wrestling event on a rainy day where my car hydroplained into a median and it totaled my car at the time. Back then I going through a serious legal battle due to identity theft over my credit, I had no savings, didn’t have full coverage insurance and had no hope or clue on what I could do. I had a Guardian Angel named @kraigkeesaman that helped me through that time. I thank God everyday for him and for people like him. I learned from that time in my life. In the past two years I won my battle over my credit and got it fixed, I’ve done well for myself business wise to have a nice savings, and have full coverage insurance. So in a wild turn of events, less than 24 hours since I wrecked my car I was able to purchase another car today. It’s not new, it’s nothing special, but the fact I was able to get it and the polar opposite feeling compared to the devastation I felt two years ago is unimaginable. I’m blessed to have a car, I’m blessed to have the love and support from my friends, family, and fans. But most importantly I’m blessed to be alive. - @fuegodelsol_ on Instagram

On Saturday, May 30th, our Associate Director, Nathan Spencer, received a text message from his wife. The message included a picture of Raleigh police in riot gear boarding a GoRaleigh bus bound for Downtown. Throughout the next couple days, during the height of the Downtown protests following the killing of George Flloyd by a Minneapolis police officer, reporters and friends shared similar photos on social media. Nathan, Vice-Chair of the Raleigh Transit Authority (RTA), brought the matter to the attention of the RTA Chair Tolulope Omokaiye and fellow RTA member Brian L Burnett. Together, they drafted a letter seeking answers to why GoRaleigh buses were used to transport police into a potentially dangerous situation and whether drivers — a workforce that is overwhelmingly African-American — were being protected to the same degree as officers in riot gear. As advocates for sustainable growth and safe, reliable public transit, we thank these members of the RTA for asking the hard questions that needed to be asked and for committing to the safety and well-being of our city’s transit workers.
