This is Mindy in my favorite place in Cades Cove. Today I got to take my grandson here. Hes 6 so Ive had to wait until he got old enough because its off trail...way off the beaten path. I had to wait until hed listen to me well enough to truly understand the words...watch your feet. He did really well and we had a good time. I also got to take him to the tree that all bears stand up and sniff a certain spot on when they pass it. That amazed him and he had to touch it too. Then we had to find a stick that had fallen from it for him to use to walk with. He says hes keeping it forever. My son was with us too. Crossing the mountain back into Townsend and to the house Eli was hanging out the windows and being silly until my son turned on some Jamestown Revival and it calmed him down and he buckled up and went to sleep when we got out of the park. It was such a good morning. I love showing my kids, and now my grandkids my secret places. I trust them with them. Theyre the ones who know what they mean to me and how important it is to keep some places to yourself. This is where part of my Mom is now. This is where Ill be forever one day. Up close and personal. I’ve spent a lot of time with these coastal rainforest bears in the last few weeks. It’s such a unique and different ecosystem than the open tundra coastal Brown Bears. I enjoy spending time with both but if I had to pick one, I’d spend time with these rainforest Black Bears. They appear out of nowhere through the old growth timber and fade away just as quickly like ghosts of the forests. Because she had her cubs nearby, she continuously scanned her surroundings to make sure nothing was infringing on their space. It was the mighty grizzly bear that inspired me to work on my long-term conservation story and book Freedom To Roam on linking wildlife habitat along the Rocky Mountains. Grizzly bears are a true symbol for wilderness. Thirty years ago there were less than 150 grizzly bears left in the Greater Yellowstone area. Thanks to strict protection under the Endangered Species Act numbers of the iconic bears have recovered since then from near extinction to more than 700 individuals. This recovery, however, led to Trump administration to de-list the species from federal protection resulting in Wyoming and Idaho to issue trophy hunting licenses for as many as 23 bears. Just two days before the sports hunt of grizzlies in the area would have started this fall, federal judge Dana Christensen ordered that the grizzly bears kept their protection status. Less than 2,000 grizzlies call the Lower 48 states their home today, compared to more than 100,000 in historical times. Their habitat has been strongly fragmented, so the remaining bears are distributed over several island populations. Bears are facing increased pressure from the effects of climate change, like the loss of important food sources like whitebark pine seeds. It is essential to continue to work on restoring bear habitat, creating wildlife corridors and reconnecting the Yellowstone bears with the other populations of the Lower 48. Episode 118. This fella—and I wanna buy Dr. Karl Malcolm a tall bourbon—pumps the brakes on a greater issue I’m getting so damn tired of. CliffsNotes: Bears go endangered in Greater Yellowstone. The same population, 42 years later, is recovered under protections set forth in the Endangered Species Act. On the heels of that news, the anti-this or that groups start flapping their collective lips and crank up the rhetoric machine. One group says they’ve got a right to hunt them. The other group wants rights to hugging them. Here’s what pisses me off about the whole political shitshow: Each side always finds a way to make everything about themselves. Therein lies the beauty of Dr. Malcolm’s point. To paraphrase: Why didn’t we just stop fighting for even a few seconds and, together, celebrate the fact that a species has been recovered? Why are we not honoring the fact that we made a plan and the plan worked? Far right. Far left. Great first night out of bear season with @rexkwolf and @bigsky_ty. Spotted this guy right away after a snow blizzard stopped and the sun poked through the clouds. A very underestimated hike... several drainages, a few doubts, and about four hours later, we finally found an opening in the trees to set up for a shot. One whiffed opportunity on my part, with a follow up shot that found its mark and I notched my 2020 tag with my best bear to date. This little cub almost looks like he’s hugging a scaly friend. Pacific salmon start their lives in rivers and streams before migrating to the ocean. They return to their birthplace, often traveling great distances to spawn. Once the eggs are secure in a nest of pebbles both male and female die within days.
