In a deeply irresponsible and disappointing policy “reform, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to expand commercial gillnet fisheries targeting spring and summer chinook in the main channel of the Lower Columbia River on Friday. ... Wild steelhead and salmon runs are struggling at historically low numbers throughout the Columbia and Snake River Watershed. Adding a deadly gauntlet of indiscriminate commercial gill nets guarantees unacceptable bycatch impacts on endangered steelhead and salmon. Frankly, we are stunned by this terrible decision. ... The Wild Steelhead Coalition had submitted a letter to the Commission opposing the policy change and we thank the Commissioners who wisely voted against it. This decision was widely opposed by hundreds of conservation, sport angling and boating organizations throughout the region. At a time when Washington managers should support moving commercial fisheries to selective methods and work closely with Oregon co-managers, this short-sighted decision instead favors narrow special interests, and makes a misguided commitment to the destructive, reckless fisheries of the past. ...
