Movement retraining can be immensely helpful in shifting load away from an injured structure temporarily to allow a faster and earlier return to sport. 𝗪𝐡𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧? Specificity is a key principle of motor learning. For instance, you will not get better at juggling by doing a bunch of biceps curls. Instead, you need to practice with more juggling. Multiple studies have now shown that gluteal strengthening does 𝘯𝘰𝘵 alter how much hip adduction (knee drifts toward midline) a runner has. In fact, 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘹 than coordination training. Even more fascinating, you can train an athlete’s mechanics during a step down or a single leg squat all you want, but this skill will not transfer to the more complex task of running or jumping. Instead, only consistently working on controlling hip adduction during running in a structured movement retraining program will reduce this motion. 𝗪𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦? Retraining is a 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 to the basics of exercise therapy, patient education, and adjusting training loads. 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. And, importantly, only runners who experience near immediate pain relief will benefit from working on movement retraining; it’s not appropriate for everyone. But used in the right runner or jumper, movement retraining can be immensely helpful. As the weekend draws to a close, we are looking forward to another week of rehearsals in our studios! Today, we are highlighting Company Dancer Justin Michael Hogans impactful experience with Romeo + Juliet, and how the spirit of collaboration found then can carry through into todays environment: If I had to pick a production that is both special to me and that makes me look forward to being back in the studio, it would be Adams Romeo and Juliet. There was a really incredible atmosphere in the building during that production. Everyone involved was taking enormous risks, but at every stage there was an equal sense of trust, camaraderie and safety. Because of that balance, all of us were constantly pushing and risking more, and what resulted was this really deep connection to each other and to this story. Maybe more than any production Ive had the pleasure of performing, I felt this incredible sense of collective ownership where we all knew we were a part of something special. Getting back into the studio is going to be incredibly strange, but I think the conditions are right to have that feeling again. We are moving into really uncharted territory, and there are obvious and inherent risks about coming back.
