On this day in 1942, the Rohwer Concentration Camp was opened in Arkansas. On this site, approximately 8,475 Japanese Americans would be incarcerated in the Deep South. That being said, the incarcerees would be forced to face the harsh weather that comes with being imprisoned in a swamp. It was due to these conditions that it was not unheard of for the camp to flood. Aside from avoiding the swarms of mosquitos, the incarcerees of Rohwer found ways to keep themselves occupied. For example, 442nd trainees from Camp Shelby would often visit for baseball games with the teams in Rohwer. Todays image depicts a flooded block at Rowher Concentration Camp. This photo was taken c 1880s near what is now the area near Calhoun and Lockwood Blvd. It was published in 1893 as part of the twelve-part publication entitled “Art Work of Charleston” published by W.H. Parish (Chicago, IL). Each part features photographs of buildings and grand homes (both “lost” and still remaining), streets, historic sites, gardens, cemeteries, industrial sites, and Lowcountry scenes along with a narrative that runs throughout each volume. On this day in 1934... The SS Morro Castle was a luxury cruise ship from the 1930s that made runs between New York City and Havana, Cuba, and was popular with tourists both young and old. In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 8th, 1934, en route from Havana to New York, the ship caught fire on the coast of the New Jersey shore; a total of 137 passengers and crew members were killed in the fire. First-responders from southern Monmouth County responded to the event and helped rescue survivors from rough seas, and also brought the dead to shore. The still-burning ship eventually beached near the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, and became a major tourist attraction until it was towed away for scrap several months later. The devastating fire aboard the Morro Castle was a catalyst for improved shipboard fire safety. Today, the use of fire retardant materials, automatic fire doors, and ship-wide fire alarms is a direct result of the Morro Castle disaster. The incident also led to greater attention being placed on fire drills and life boat procedures. The first-ever commemorative monument to the ill-fated SS Morro Castle was dedicated by the Asbury Park Historical Society in 2009, the 75th anniversary of the maritime disaster. There is a black marble monument, funded through donations and fundraisers on a grassy strip just south of Convention Hall and is the first-known monument erected to commemorate this important maritime disaster. *original write up from the @aphistoricalsociety website. Desde el aire, la destrucción que dejó el huracán Laura se ve particularmente cruda. Fotografías de The Associated Press muestran vecindarios enteros rodeados de aguas color verde y marrón. Un edificio con fachada de cristal perdió la mayor parte de sus ventanas. Un hangar quedó hecho añicos. Después de días de estar acumulando fuerza en el Golfo de México, Laura se convirtió en uno de los huracanes más potentes que hayan impactado a Estados Unidos, un monstruo de categoría 4 con vientos de 240 km/h que superó en fuerza incluso a Katrina, el cual generó gran devastación en Luisiana hace casi exactamente 15 años. Laura arremetió contra la costa del Golfo de México con fuertes vientos y lluvias, desató un temible muro de agua salada y cobró la vida de por lo menos seis personas. El meteoro desprendió tejados y dejó a vecindarios enteros en ruinas. La mayoría de las viviendas que permanecieron de pie perdieron tejas y ventanas, y sus jardines estaban llenos de escombros. El huracán mantuvo su fuerza durante horas después de tocar tierra y dejó un sendero de destrucción de cientos de kilómetros tierra adentro. Hasta el momento se tiene el reporte de que seis personas murieron el jueves en Louisiana como resultado del huracán Laura, según el Departamento de Salud de Louisiana. La portavoz Alyson Neel dijo que dos de las víctimas estaban en el distrito de Calcasieu, mientras que también hubo muertes en los distritos de Acadia, Allen, Jackson y Vernon.
