This marker is a bit confusing for me. John O. Martell was killed in 1861 at age 18. I can find zero information on him. Even his FindaGrave entry says he was a civil war soldier (note the Union carved into his stone and the flag) BUT the civil war didn’t start until April of that year, he was killed in February. This Memorial Day, I ask Americans to pause for a moment and offer a prayer of thanks for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for you and every freedom-loving American. Unfortunately, many of us never take that important moment to really appreciate the sacrifice that was made. Let me tell you my story. A few years ago, as a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I traveled to visit the American cemeteries in both Europe and North Africa. On that Memorial Day, our committee participated in the Memorial Day ceremony at Netherlands American Cemetery. It was a beautiful day, and the ceremony was moving. A Dutch men’s choir sang ‘God Bless America,’ the Royal Netherlands Air Force did a ‘missing man formation’ flyover, and local residents and their children placed flowers on each grave. Stories were shared of the heroism of American and Allied soldiers who defeated the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge. After the ceremony, my wife and I walked past every grave to pay our respects. The white crosses and Stars of David glistened in the sunlight. At one of the graves, I paused to read the inscription, and it brought me to tears. In simple black letters etched in the marble cross it read, ‘Private Roy C. Irwin, New Jersey, December 28, 1944.’ The day Roy C. Irwin died fighting for America was the same day I was born. All of a sudden, the meaning of Memorial Day became clear. On the day my mother gave me life, Roy C. Irwin sacrificed his life for the freedom I have enjoyed and cherished for 72 years. On this Memorial Day, I say, ‘God bless Roy C. Irwin, and God bless America’s veterans.’ - @senatorisakson on Instagram

Thoughtful Thursday. Thankful Thursday. Therapeutic Thursday. All of the above indeed. My maternal grandfather died on Monday at age 101 in Seoul, S Korea. These photos show the funeral process in S. Korea plus the #tbt photos of him (and my grandmother who died a few years ago) at my wedding in 1998. I’ve been processing all week what I’m feeling and able to share it now in words. It feels like the end of an era. He was the last of my grandparents to go, and lived a very long, fulfilling life! I am at peace not only about his death, but my upbringing. I am thankful to say, I am proud of my family, Korean heritage, and what my grandparents have done and signify in my life. Yes, I did struggle greatly with my identity and know that I was definitely not a favorite mainly because I was the third oldest grandchild, second girl and didn’t compare with the other two cousins! 😭 However, a poignant moment I will always recall was the time my grandfather told me in 2002, I was raising my kids very well. That. Was. A. Moment. The first, the last, the only positive affirmation I had ever received from my grandfather. We were in Seoul visiting over the holidays and my son at the time was only 8 months old and never cried. :). So, he called him an “angel” in Korean and acknowledged that it must be from my parenting. 😂. In all honesty, my son was just a really good baby. 🤣However, I graciously accepted the compliment and owned it because it was so IMPACTFUL. It was then that I realized I had finally come to a reconciliation in my self-identity crisis. Transformed from that day on, and so passionate about the work I do today in mental health. 🤗 Grandfather 왜 할아버지wrote a book last year and he chronicles his life and includes his grandchildren. Yes, me too! And, he makes me sound much more accomplished than I am. After a fruitful few years of learning how to run and operate a design studio, it’s with the utmost excitement and pleasure that we announce that, well, we’re done. Der Gedenkstein zur 750-Jahr Feier in der Schulstraße / Ecke Stäbelstraße wurde vom Moos befreit und der Schriftzug erneuert. Auch die Kreuze wurden neu angestrichen, vom Moos befreit und die Schriftzüge erneuert. Hierfür einen herzlichen Dank an die Mitarbeiter unseres Bauhofs! Allen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern, die an diesen Kreuzen das Unkraut zupfen und für Blumenschmuck sorgen sei ebenfalls herzlichst Dank gesagt!
