26th SEPTEMBER 2020 – 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF ISHWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR The 19th century saw the rise of a socio-cultural, intellectual movement in Bengal known as the Bengal Renaissance. This social reform movement saw the rise of various intellectuals who used the medium of creative expression as a dominant mode of promoting and debating about social structure, religion, education. Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Rabindranath Tagore were the major proponents, however, along with them were also Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, known for his humanistic approach and knowledge in Vedanta philosophy and Sanskrit. Born on 26th September 1820, Ishwar Chandra, in his childhood, was introduced to the various subjects like astronomy, grammar, philosophy and literature which by his graduation in 1841 earned him the title of ‘Vidyasagar’ meaning Ocean of knowledge. His most prominent contribution has been towards the cultural awakening of the Bengal Renaissance by being a supporter of girls’ education, widow remarriages and was against high caste polygamy. He organised various public protests, the famous being the ‘Signature Campaign’ which got him into strife with the religious groups, citing scriptures for their discriminatory treatment. Ishwar countered these allegations by publishing papers on widow marriages by stating that no scripture debars widow remarriages. His constants legal intervention into these discriminatory malpractices led the formulation of the Hindu Widows Remarriage Act 1856. This landmark judgment protected the widows and gave them the right to lead a respectful life. As a scholar and philanthropist, he was a staunch supporter of dissemination of education, even to women to rise above the societal oppressions. He established schools by initiating Nari Shakti Bhandar for its funding. Along with this, he is also credited for standardising and reforming the Bengali alphabets by writing the book Borno Porichoy (Varna Parichay) and has written several books encompassing elements of mythology, humour, satire and irony. Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (M. S. Subbulakshmi) was a prominent Indian Carnatic singer and musician from Madhurai, Tamil Nadu. She was the first ever musician to recieve the lauded Bharat Ratna - Indias highest civilian honour. In addition to being a celebrated singer and a classical veenai player Subbulakshmi also starred in several films. Her first film Sevasadanam in 1938 was set in a contemporary social setting and was an advocate to reformist social policies. Prominant film critic Aranthai Narayanan stated that the film was a turning point in Tamil cinema. In the climax, the husband was shown casting aside with contempt his sacred thread,, which symbolises Brahmin superiority. It came as a stunning blow to the then Bramin orthodoxy. Subbulakshmi also played a male role in Savitri (1941) to raise money for the launch of her husbands Tamil weekly news paper called Kalki. Her husband Kalki Krishnamurthy was a journalist, poet, writer and an Indian independence activist. - @tamilartarchive on Instagram

Hi friends. I want to talk about transgenerational trauma in black peoples. TGT(transgenerational trauma) is the idea that trauma can be passed down from trauma survivors to second and further generations due to PTSD. With slavery came oppression of black people. Lands were taken, families and cultures were disrupted, sense of self....every part of their life destroyed. But we know this. The end of slavery did NOT end this trauma. What came after slavery? Jim Crow laws which led to segregation, lynching, removal of social and economic resources, etc. slavery might have ended but the idea that black ppl were were inferior and less than human STILL carried through those generations. Convicts worked in cotton fields and were shot of they tried to escape and was pretty much referred to a “knockoff” of slavery in the 1900s. Which is funny(not) that convicts were shot and killed by enforcement and those who were the “enforcers” were pardoned from murder! Wow this sounds very familiar. Let’s roll on over to WW1. SURELY black soldiers fighting would give them SOMETHING positive to come back to? Nope. Still getting lynched. Segregation is still happening. The Civil Rights Movement chopped away @ legal issues, but racial barriers still existed. Slavery ended, and Incarceration happened. Why? Because black ppl were STILL being subjected to economic issues due to past events bleeding over. At some points 50% of prisoners were black, EVEN THOUGH 76% of drug users were white??? But only black ppl got arrested which eventually led to the “War on Drugs”. Aka a very well disguised form of racial control. This is why you see such a large amount of black convicts. Even after the March on Washington, black individuals STILL accounted for most of the poverty and were more likely to be part of the homeless population - @rumitto on Instagram

Ritchie’s family wanted to remember “Mama” and share her birthday with Ritchie’s family and friends. Happy Birthday Mama. Concepcion Connie Valenzuela was born on October 6, 1915, and passed on October 18, 1987. In the mid 1950’s the Valenzuela Family moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima where the then-teenager attended high school and began to play in a rock band. As his career began to take off, he changed his name to Ritchie Valens and eventually recorded the hits we all know and love. The matriarch of the family had lived in Watsonville during her later years, but spent time in the home that Valens bought for her in 1958 with his music earnings. Mrs. Valenzuela would have been 104 years old. #ritchievalens #alwaysremember #neverforget - @ritchievalensofficial on Instagram

The promise of a medicine woman If you come to me as a victim I will not support you. But I will have the courage to walk with you through the pain that you are suffering. I will put you in the fire, I will undress you, and I will sit you on the earth. I will bathe you with herbs, I will purge you, and you will vomit the rage and the darkness inside you. Ill bang your body with good herbs, and Ill put you to lay in the grass, face up to the sky. Then I will blow your crown to clean the old memories that make you repeat the same behavior. I will blow your forehead to scare away the thoughts that cloud your vision. I will blow your throat to release the knot that wont let you talk. I will blow your heart to scare fear, so that it goes far away where it cannot find you. I will blow your solar plexus to extinguish the fire of the hell you carry inside, and you will know peace. I will blow with fire your belly to burn the attachments, and the love that was not. I will blow away the lovers that left you, the children that never came. I will blow your heart to make you warm, to rekindle your desire to feel, create and start again. I will blow with force your vagina or your penis, to clean the sexual door to your soul. I will blow away the garbage that you collected trying to love what did not wanted to be loved. I will use the broom, and the sponge, and the rag, and safely clean all the bitterness inside you. I will blow your hands to destroy the ties that prevent you from creating. I will blow your feet to dust and erase the footprints memories, so you can never return to that bad place. I will turn your body, so your face will kiss the earth. Ill blow your spine from the root to the neck to increase your strength and help you walk upright. And I will let you rest. After this you will cry, and after crying you will sleep, And you will dream beautiful and meaningful dreams, and when you wake up Ill be waiting for you. I will smile at you, and you will smile back I will offer you food that you will eat with pleasure, tasting life, and I will thank you. Because what I’m offering today, was offered to me before when darkness lived within me. More in comments - @indigenouspeoplesmovement on Instagram

The beautiful Château Kapurthala in Mussoorie was once home to Maharaja Jagjit Singh, a true renaissance ruler. The Maharaja modeled his state along French lines. He was a close friend to Queen Victoria, spoke exquisite French, only drank French Evian water (which was especially shipped from France) and turned Kapurthala into “Paris of the East”! Maharaja’s grandson, Brigadier HH Maharaja Sukhjit Singh continues to reside in Kapurthala and has recently collaborated on a beautiful biography of his grandfather with the historian and author, Cynthia Meera Frederick. We are lucky to have the Maharaja and Cynthia Frederick on our panel tomorrow to talk more about Château Kapurthala and its history! #daughtersday 𝙐𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙞 𝙟𝙖𝙖𝙣 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙞 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙣𝙖 𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙪𝙟𝙝𝙚 Shabana Azmi shared a special bond with her Abba Kaifi Azmi, the legendary poet. Her earliest memories of her Abba was him sitting on a writing table in his white kurta-pyjama smoking incessantly and writing in the wee hours of the morning. As a child, she was convinced poet was a euphemism for people who dont work! Living in Red Flag Hall, a commune like flat of the Communist Party of India meant the family lived frugally. Her mother Shaukat Azmi worked in Prithvi Thearte and in her absence her Abba fed, bathed and looked after the children. Her mother often rehearsed her lines spontaneously in front of dhobi, cook etc. Shabana got petrified and assumed her mother is turning insane. Her father dropped his work and took her for long walk on beach, he explained to her, her mother has not enough time to rehearse and as a family it is their duty to support her. Shabana was embarrassed about her father while growing up since Kaifi never wore in western clothes or could speak English. It was years later, Shabana finally realised the grandeur of her father. When she finally confided in her father she wants to act, he said I will support you in whatever you choose to do. If you want to become a shoemaker (moochi) I will support you provided you tell yourself that you will try to become the best moochi in the business. One of the heart warming incidence between father and daughter is related to mangoes. When Shabana was young she brought a bag full of mangoes from her friend. Kaifi noticed this but did not say a word. It was 1950s and the family was living frugally. Years later, when Shaukat and Azmi shifted to a village, Kaifi made a small land of mango orchard and every Friday sent boxes of mangoes to Shabana Azmi. #history #heritage #arthistory #art #artoftheday #artofinstagram #storiesofindia #india_gram #igramming_india #travelphotography #traverealindia #TheCultureGully #incredibleindia #indianblogger #covid_19 #quarantineandchill #quarantinelife #staysafe #stayhome #stayhomechallenge #lockdown2020 #fatherdaughter #love #bonding #urdu #urdupoetry #urdulove - @enroute_indian_history_ on Instagram

#pierresangpatriot #pierretendean #pahlawanrevolusi #gugurbunga #tendean #g30spki #g30spki1965 #1965 #kaptenpierretendean #nasution #abdulharisnasution #pahlawanbangsa #jasmerah - @vz_pierre on Instagram
