thinking of mian, my maternal grandfather. he taught us to swim and say our prayers. (i can still hear him reciting the phrase “ihdinas-sirat-al-mustaqeem” — ‘guide us on the right path’ — and me and @mira.sethi reciting after him like a pair of grateful dwarves.) on summer nights, when there was a power outage, he would buy us ice-cold cokes from the haunted-looking railway crossing near his farm. he called it “coca-cola ki botal”, which made it sound so much more delicious. i remember i was wading in the tank one day, and a large insect fell into the water. I quickly pedalled away in panic. but mian cupped his hands around the creature and hurled it out with the water. “it’s harmless,” he said. i remember receiving that bolt of wisdom — the word ‘harmless’ opening up a whole new province of sensibility and experience. harmless! but of course! he also told me stories about his childhood — how he had grown up with deer and wolves and lions in his surroundings, and he promised to take me one day to see this fabled ‘ghairabad’. i always imagined it as a thorny wilderness with dead old trees and animal skeletons lying around. (too much lion king in my system!) i would beg him to take me to ghairabad and he would laughingly put it off. it took me years to realize that ‘ghairabad’ simply meant ‘ghair’ + ‘abad’, i.e. ‘not inhabited’ land, which we could see in dusty patches all around... #grandfather #family #stories #punjab - @alisethiofficial on Instagram

My grandparents came to the UK in the 70s, and worked for the NHS until their retirement. Being Indian, but born in Britain, sometimes I feel like I’m straddling two complex and intangible identities, especially when I’m confronted with questions like ’Where are you REALLY from?’ or asked why I’m brown, but have a ‘white’ surname. Like so many, the British empire and its lasting effects in India is entangled in my identity. But there is still a sense of national amnesia when it comes to Britain’s imperial past, an unwillingness to acknowledge what colonialism did and how its legacy lives on today. A false and romanticised version of events is still ingrained in our national story and rooted in our culture. This was clear just yesterday when our PM Boris Johnson proclaimed that we should end our ‘cringing national embarrassment about our history’, encouraging patriotic pride in Britain’s involvement in slavery and colonialism. I *wish* his opinion was uncommon, but a survey found that 59% of the British population think that the atrocities of empire were “something to be proud of”. (YouGov, 2014) It’s kind of unsurprising when you think about how much of our colonial history has been filtered or consciously covered up (google Operation Legacy). Our school curriculum excludes the ‘ugly’ bits of our national past, and this erasure perpetuates white supremacy in our education system and minimises past injustice and racism - further marginalising those whose ancestors have suffered because of it. This year research found that only 9% of GCSE students have studied modules that reference the British empire, and only 11% study modules that acknowledge Black people’s contribution to Britain. It was only when I started studying history at university that I really began to learn the full extent of British imperialism and its ongoing legacy - and there’s still SO much I don’t know. Hi friends. I want to talk about transgenerational trauma in black peoples. TGT(transgenerational trauma) is the idea that trauma can be passed down from trauma survivors to second and further generations due to PTSD. With slavery came oppression of black people. Lands were taken, families and cultures were disrupted, sense of self....every part of their life destroyed. But we know this. The end of slavery did NOT end this trauma. What came after slavery? Jim Crow laws which led to segregation, lynching, removal of social and economic resources, etc. slavery might have ended but the idea that black ppl were were inferior and less than human STILL carried through those generations. Convicts worked in cotton fields and were shot of they tried to escape and was pretty much referred to a “knockoff” of slavery in the 1900s. Which is funny(not) that convicts were shot and killed by enforcement and those who were the “enforcers” were pardoned from murder! Wow this sounds very familiar. Let’s roll on over to WW1. SURELY black soldiers fighting would give them SOMETHING positive to come back to? Nope. Still getting lynched. Segregation is still happening. The Civil Rights Movement chopped away @ legal issues, but racial barriers still existed. Slavery ended, and Incarceration happened. Why? Because black ppl were STILL being subjected to economic issues due to past events bleeding over. At some points 50% of prisoners were black, EVEN THOUGH 76% of drug users were white??? But only black ppl got arrested which eventually led to the “War on Drugs”. Aka a very well disguised form of racial control. This is why you see such a large amount of black convicts. Even after the March on Washington, black individuals STILL accounted for most of the poverty and were more likely to be part of the homeless population - @rumitto on Instagram

#Onthisday in 1895, the Executive Council of the Republic of Hawaii paroled #Liliuokalani to her home, Washington Place. She had been arrested earlier that year on January 16, 1895. In early February she was put on trial and convicted of “not informing the Republic of Hawaii Government that her supporters were plotting to return her to power.” Her sentence of a $5,000 fine and 5 years hard labor was immediately commuted to house arrest. She was imprisoned in the Makai Diamond head room on the second floor of the Palace, then known as the Executive Building, from January 16, 1895 until she was paroled at 3:25 pm on September 6, 1895. Conditions of her parole included: - She was to “live in a quiet, unostentatious manner and to abstain from having political meetings or other gatherings at her home or attending such meetings elsewhere.” - She was not allowed to be away from her home Washington Place overnight unless she had written consent from the government. - Visitors were limited to personal friends and those visiting to conduct business. – Her staff was fixed at 13 men, 8 women, and their children. In February 1896, as a reward for having faithfully abided by these restrictions, her parole was modified. She was given permission to leave Oahu if she had written consent of the Republic of Hawaii. GUCCIO GUCCI: When the name Gucci comes to mind, most fashionphiles conjure the image of Alessandro Michele has dreamed up in the last few years.But long before marquee designers were running the show at Gucci, the fashion house got its start as a leather shop. Born in 1881, Guccio was the son of an Italian leather maker. Guccio was not too keen on taking the same occupational route as his father, so he travelled to London and Paris, where he worked as a waiter, dishwasher and concierge. In London, he worked at the prestigious Savoy Hotel as a lift attendant, and it was during this time that he took note of the beautiful luggage styles that he saw.On his return to Florence , he did follow in his father’s footsteps. The first Gucci shop was founded in Florence in 1921, In the beginning, Gucci’s main business was making saddles and other accessories for horseback riders and the red and green woven stripe , inspired by saddle details. in general many of his designs were inspired by horseracing, and his company quickly became known for its incredible level of craftsmanship.Leather was hard to come by in the mid-1930s, because of sanctions against Italy, so Gucci began experimenting with alternative textiles. This led to the very first signature Gucci print: small interconnected diamonds in dark brown, woven into a tan hemp fabric. In 1932 Guccio created the first loafer shoe with a gilded snaffle, as well as a wonderful selection of luggage ties, shoes and the famous handbags with a bamboo handle was born under similar circumstances in 1947; Gucci artisans were scrambling to find materials towards the end of World War II and discovered that they could use Japanese bamboo to craft unique bag handles . Guccio enlisted his three sons Aldo, Vasco, and Rodolfo to join the business in 1938. The year 1953 is famous for two reasons: the death of Guccio Gucci, and the opening of the first Gucci store overseas. Boutiques started to spring up everywhere, and the glamorous ‘GG’ symbol that is still used today, was created in the 1960s. My Granny and Granda - Mary and John Judge - on O’Connell St. some time in the late forties. They lived all their adult lives in the Greek St. flats. My Granda worked in Guinnesses and the fish market while my Granny worked selling fruit on Thomas St. on the same patch that her mother and grandmother sold on. When her grandmother - my great great grandmother - started out they grew the produce that they sold in the Phoenix park. I’m thinking a lot today about matrilineal lines and how women kept everything together while men struggled to evolve past a very basic stage. My Granda was in St. Joseph’s Industrial school in Artane which was infamous for its abuse of young boys and undoubtedly carried a lot of trauma from his time there. 155 years ago on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger informed the people of Galveston, TX that slavery had ended. Sometimes called Liberation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates that day. Although not yet a national holiday, it is recognized in nearly every state. • On Juneteenth 2020, we share two daguerreotypes, each depicting an African American. Dating to the 1840s, the first was created more than a decade before the American Civil War began, while slavery was still legal in the southern United States. It features an elderly woman who appears to be in her 70s, placing her date of birth in the 18th century. She wears a white lace bonnet and collar and a dark-colored dress. Although she – and her photographer – remain unidentified, the daguerreotype speaks volumes about the woman, particularly her status as a literate member of society: she holds a book and eyeglasses and one arm rests near a stack of books. • @zoebgarrett researched the other daguerreotype, an image of Jeremiah A. Wade, a Civil War veteran from Ohio. Born in 1829 to parents who identified as “Mulatto” in census records, Wade did, too, until early 1862, when he listed his race as “White” to enlist in the Union Army when black Americans could not yet serve. He died in 1898 and was survived by 7 children. Wade’s photograph was taken by James Presley Ball, a well-known African-American photographer who documented the horrors and triumphs of life for 19th-century black Americans. He documented lynchings and photographed Frederick Douglass as well as celebrations of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. El nom de Lligamosques el trobem esmentat ja el 1760, en els documents de la Confraria del Santíssim de lesglésia parroquial de Sant Esteve. Lactual Lligamosques pot ser una adaptació dun cap que es conserva a la casa que la família Bolòs té al Carrer Major dOlot, que és obra de Ramon Amadeu. Ladaptació podria ser obra del mateix Amadeu, o bé dalgun escultor de la ciutat. La seva funció ha estat llargament discutida; per a uns fa de mestre de cerimònies, obrint pas als gegants; per a daltres obre pas als gegants i procura que les criatures no els entrebanquin i els facin caure. చిలుకూరి నారాయణరావు దత్తమండలాలుగా ఉన్న నాలుగు ( కర్నూలు, కడప, అనంతపురం, చిత్తూరు) జిల్లాలకు “రాయలసీమ” అని నామకరణం చేసిన వ్యక్తి రాయలసీమ విజయనగర సామ్రాజ్యంలో భాగాంగా శ్రీ కృష్ణదేవ రాయలచే పరిపాలించబడింది. అదేవిదంగా కాకతీయ, ముసునూరి వారసులైన పెమ్మసాని, రావెళ్ళ, మిక్కిలినేని, సాయపనేని కమ్మనాయక రాజులు రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతని పరిపాలించారు. అది వరకూ తూర్పు చాళుక్యుల పరిపాలనా కేంద్రంగా హిరణ్యక రాష్ట్రంగా ఈ ప్రాంతం విలసిల్లినది. తర్వాత రాయలసీమ పై చోళుల ప్రభావం పెరిగింది. బ్రిటీషు వారి సహకారాన్ని పలు యుద్ధాలలో పొందిన హైదరాబాదుకి చెందిన నిజాం సుల్తానులు 1802 లో ఈ ప్రాంతాన్ని వారికి ధారాదత్తం చేయటంతో దీనికి దత్త మండలం అని పేరు వచ్చింది. 1808 లో దత్త మండలం ను విభజించి బళ్ళారి, కడప జిల్లాలని ఏర్పరచారు. 1882 లో అనంతపురంను బళ్ళారి నుండి వేరు చేశారు. ఈ ప్రాంతానికి 1928లో చిలుకూరి నారాయణరావు రాయలసీమ అని పేరుపెట్టాడు. అప్పటినుండి ఆ పేరే స్థిరపడినది. DID YOU KNOW THAT... The revered leader of India’s freedom movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, early ideologies were racist... A controversial book reveals personal journals, letters and shocking details about the future Indian leader. It is essentially based on Gandhi’s life in South Africa between 1893 and 1914, before he returned to India. During his stay in South Africa, Gandhi routinely expressed “disdain for Africans. Gandhi described black Africans as “savage,” “raw” and living a life of “indolence and nakedness,” and he campaigned relentlessly to prove to the British rulers that the Indian community in South Africa was superior to native black Africans. Prize-winning Indian author Arundhati Roy says the book is “a serious challenge to the way we have been taught to think about Gandhi.” One of the first battles Gandhi fought after coming to South Africa was over the separate entrances for whites and blacks at the Durban post office. Gandhi objected that Indians were “classed with the natives of South Africa,” who he called the kaffirs, and demanded a separate entrance for Indians. Protesting the decision of Johannesburg municipal authorities to allow Africans to live alongside Indians, Gandhi wrote in 1904 that the council “must withdraw the Kaffirs from the Location. Here is a sample of what Gandhi said about black South Africans: “We felt the indignity too much and … petitioned the authorities to do away with the invidious distinction, and they have now provided three separate entrances for natives, Asiatics and Europeans.” In December 2018, his statue was removed from the University of Ghana after protests by students and staff. In Amsterdam, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized, in the UK, over 6,000 people signed an online petition to take down Gandhis statue in Leicester. Q. How did you form Navketan Films? Dev Anand- In 1947, India became independent and India and Pakistan were divided. 2 years later, in 1949, Navketan was formed. We started with a movie called Afsar and from that it has been non-stop till now. About 80% of the people in the Hindi motion picture industry, whether technicians, stars, music directors, lyricists, or character actors, before they established themselves elsewhere, they all have nearly been associated with Navketan in some way or the other. It was institution which was born by my brother Chetan and me. I did it for him. In the late 40s, I was becoming a big star and he needed a company to make films. So when he left Navketan, I brought in Goldie, and when Goldie left, I carried on alone. No book on Indian cinema is complete without mention of Navketan. He rose with difficulty from his couch; showed me his arms which were eaten into by disease and by flies – partly from want of water; and he said, in a lamentable voice, that he had not enough to eat.” - The Last Mughal, William Dalrymple On 19 September, 1857 The Emperor with his sons and wives was arrested at Humayuns Tomb where he had taken refuge. He was brought to Red Fort and a year later on 27 January, 1858 at 11 am with utmost humiliation his trial started. The same place where he and his ancestors had decided the fate of so many people. He was tried for waging war against the British, a consequence of Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The trial lasted 41 days, had 19 hearings, 21 witnesses and over a hundred documents in Persian and Urdu (with English translation). Initially, Bahadur Shah Zafar did not understand when he was asked if he pleads guilty. He finally broke silence on 20th day defending himself against these charges. He defended that the young sepoys completely overtook the command and forced his seal on empty envelopes. Zafars ultimate blow came from his most trusted physician and Prime Minister Hakim Ahsanullah Khan who betrayed him by presenting evidence to the court against his own safety. Respecting Captain Hodsons guarantee, Zafar was not sentenced to death but exiled to Rangoon, Burma. Zafar, his wives and some princes began their journey in bullock carts towards Rangoon. He passed away at the age of 87 in 1862. Kitna he badnaseeb Zafar dafn ke liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili ku-e-yar mein. Rudyard Kipling mentions her in his posthumously published autobiography, Something of Myself (1937) - “Our ayah was a Portuguese Roman Catholic who would pray—I beside her—at a wayside Cross.” 🌹 According to other sources, when Rudyard was born in 1856, his delighted grandparents in England received a carte de visite photograph of baby Rudyard, showing him asleep in the lap of a dark-skinned Madras ayah, an upright, dignified woman, with a bare head and thick black hair coiled on her neck (Birkenhead, 1978, p. 11). 🌹 According to psyartjournal.com In 1985, psychoanalyst Harry T. Hardin persuasively argued that alienation between infant and biological mother may result when a close bond develops between an infant and its early primary surrogate mother--nannies, nurses, maids, or relatives. After Sam, his sister Dolly, and her children, were emancipated, Sam was successful in having August 8 set aside for Emancipation Day observances and celebrations. Since that time, celebrations continue to take place throughout Tennessee and other states. Dolly’s three children are laid to rest in the Freedmen’s Mission Historic Cemetery. Each year during the Annual Eighth of August Jubilee, Beck hosts The Libation the morning of August 8 on the grounds of the historic cemetery. 24 กันยายน วันมหิดล คำแสดงความอาลัย ถวายแด่เจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลยเดช กรมขุนสงขลานครินทร์ (สนองโอฐ สภากาชาดสยาม ตุลาคม 2472) สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่ยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลยเดช กรมขุนสงขลานครินทร์ ทรงเป็นสมาชิกกิตติมศักดิ์แห่งสภากาชาดสยาม ตั้งแต่วันที่ 25 มิถุนายน 2468 โดยได้ทรงบริจาคธนทรัพย์เข้าส่วนสร้างโรงพยาบาลจุฬาลงกรณ์ และสมทบสร้างตึกจักรพงษ์ และบำรุงกิจการอื่น ๆ รวม 3 คราวเป็นเงิน 8,011.75 บาท ในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2466-2467 สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่ยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากรมขุนสงขลานครินทร์ ทรงเป็นกรรมการกาชาดสยาม และใน พ.ศ. 2466 นั้น สภากาชาดสยามได้ถวายเหรียญกาชาดสมนาคุณชั้นที่ 2 แก่พระองค์ การที่ได้ทรงบริจาคทานมัยและทรงรับหน้าที่กรรมการของสภาตลอดจนได้รับเหรียญกาชาดสมนาคุณแล้วนั้น ย่อมเป็นพะยานแห่งพระกรุณาอันสำคัญในการกาชาดส่วนหนึ่ง นอกจากพระกรุณาอื่นนานัปการ อาทิเช่น การช่วยส่งเสริมอนามัย ส่งเสริมการศึกษา ซึ่งได้ทรงสละธนทรัพย์เป็นจำนวนมากมาย เจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลยเดช กรมขุนสงขลานครินทร์ สิ้นพระชนม์เมื่อวันที่ 24 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2472 ย่อมเป็นที่อาลัยแก่ปวงสมาชิกและประชาชนทั่วหน้า คณะกรรมการสภากาชาดสยามมีความกำสรดเสียดายยิ่งที่จำเป็นต้องขาดพระองค์ผู้อุปการีแก่การกาชาด การอนามัย และการศึกษาอันสำคัญ ขอเดชะบรรดาพระกุศลทาน ซึ่งได้ทรงบำเพ็ญมาแล้ว ๆ นั้น เพื่อสังคหกิจสาธารณะในวงงานของสภากาชาดสยามก็ดี และในกิจการอื่นก็ดีจงตามสนองพระองค์ให้ทรงประสพอิฏฐวิบุลย์ผลสุขสถาพรตามควรแก่คตินิยมในปรภพ เทอญ ที่มา : แผนกไว้อาลัย. หนังสือพิมพ์สนองโอฐสภากาชาดสยาม เล่ม 7 ตุลาคม 2472 – กันยายน 2473. - @thairedcross on Instagram

We remember The Rebel Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam (24 May 1899 - 29 August 1976), whose contributions to literature and social justice are perhaps unparalleled in the Bengali language. Sample a section of this fiery deposition he made to a magistrate who had booked him for sedition: I am a poet; I have been sent by God to express the unexpressed, to portray the unportrayed. It is God who is heard through the voice of the poet. My voice is but a medium for Truth, the message of God. To legal sophistry that message may appear to be mere sedition, but to Justice it is neither unjust nor untrue. The king can muzzle that voice, but to Religion and Justice it will always remain the innocent, immaculate, undimmed and ever-burning Truth.
