Big Ups to @jrmaosi for capturing this unique 📸 of @nathan_florence and a hooded villain splitting the peak at Pipeline... for it being the most photographed wave on the planet, it’s no wonder we see many photographers images looking similar to the next, and it’s always a treat to see an angle that’s fresh... I especially appreciate these pics because @jrmaosi had to be really close to the take-off zone to show the ribs and texture in the actual wave face (notice how the viewer cannot see my board because of the rib of water creating a small valley in the face of the wave? I went partly for my own development but also to get footage for the AmpSurf HomeBreak Championship. One the many good things about The Wave is theres always surfable conditions unlike home right now where we are in the middle of an over a week long flat spell. Cuando además me dijeron que tenía que dibujar un pulpo, ¡mi cabeza explotó! Hace unas semanas llegaron algunas cartas a casa y por fin, ¡las tengo en mi mano! Un sueño hecho realidad! Las cartas son ediciones limitadas con el reverso en blanco para que yo pueda personalizarlas así que si alguien está interesado en adquirir una de ellas, que se ponga en contacto conmigo por mensaje privado y lo hablamos. But my mind was totally blown the moment I learnt that what I had to draw was an octopus! I just couldn’t believe my luck! Flashback to my first ever underwater shoot. This day was pivotal in my life for many reasons. I currently have this tail up for sale to help get needed funds for my hubby’s dream to start a taco truck (@haolepenos ), but it’s not getting a lot of interest. I think it’s because it was my hotel performance tail for a few years and it got pretty hammered by hordes of sweet, but fin-tugging guppies...My mermaid life hasn’t been easy for me, with a lot of heartbreak and big mistakes. But when you have a passion that seems to be more like an extension of yourself than a feeling, it’s hard to let it go. And even though my mistakes have been fairly self damaging, I have learned and grown so much and feel I am becoming a better version of myself little by little and I hope that’s starting to show. I know we are never done evolving, so I know that my growing pains will never end. But I’m starting to welcome these pains and view them as just unpleasant but temporary means to a more fulfilling end. So I’m thinking- if I can aspire to achieve the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, maybe my worn and battered tail can do the same? I’m imagining cutting her her apart where body meets fluke, slitting the fluke open like a clamshell, inserting a more powerful monofin in the slit (a modified finis trainer), maybe adhering the silicone to a neoprene lining and adding a zipper underneath the dorsal for easier insertion of feet into foot pockets), reinforce the weak spots with silpoxy, and then new paint for a design I’m not entirely sure a tail modifying newbie like me could pull off, but I’m into pushing the boundaries. Of course my hubby’s dream comes first. But if I can’t sell my merbeastie, I really love the idea of just evolving her as I evolve too. What do you think? New lives for both of us? Anchoring... ⚓ For someone nightmare, for other delight. Do you know how to recognize that anchor is holding your boat? 👉 Drain the sufficient amount of chain you need to anchor at the selected location. 👉 Then take the engine to help. Add from neutral and start at 1100 rpm. Using an engine alone is no science, but one more thing will help you. 👉 When the chain tightens, click on the plotter (zoom in as much as possible) with a cross on your boat, to where you are standing. The cross will be parked on the bow or stern. 👉 If the boat is not moving, add 1500 revolutions, which corresponds to a wind of about 12 knots. Is the ship moving? 👉 If not and you are in a place that is very well protected and you know it will not blow, this reassurance may be enough. 👉 If the weather is worse or you want to be absolutely sure, add at 2000 rpm. This simulates a stronger wind. And still watch the ship move on the plotter. If the anchor really holds, you will see only minimal movement and tension of the chain. WHY APNEA LIFE 🌊From infancy most of us feel a magical attraction to water. For 9 months before we are born, we live in water, like the sea many believe is the origin of all life. The sea many of us spend their lives trying to get back to.🌊 (“Ocean Men: extreme dive”, directed by Bob Talbot, 2001) -- We’ve been in apnea since the beginning of our life. For the first 9 months, in the amniotic fluid of the womb. That’s how we live - carefree, with no stress, no worries - before coming in contact with our human experience. An experience which is lived and perceived differently, depending on the eyes with which we look at a constantly changing and evolving world, where we are subject to rapid variations of stimuli, social and technological changes. In this society, launched towards an unstoppable trajectory with a dizzying rhythm, we can’t find the time to listen to ourselves, to deeply understand our body, our mind and our emotions. We lose contact with nature, but also with ourselves. In a world that moves very quickly, one of the best ways to recover this lost contact is to go back to our roots: freediving is pure well-being. You won’t find it at extreme depths, you’ll live it simply by staying in the water. Of course, holding your breath is a completely unnatural action, but getting to live this dimension enables you to achieve a good relationship with yourself and to get to know a part of yourself better. But how? At the core of all this is breathing. If you breathe well, you can control your heartbeat and your mind. Breathing is at the heart of emotional balance, allowing you to meet positive energy to challenge yourself and your fears. Breathing consciously is the first step to make to listen to our own body again, staying focused on ourselves and our emotions, helping us understand and face what stresses us and allowing us to figure out what makes us happy.
