Known as Sandtown for its sandy roads and frequent sandstorms off the banks of the Brazos river, this neighborhood was home to hundreds of families that contributed substantially to the diversity and economic growth of Waco. These families were primarily working class families who immigrated from Mexico to the United States. Sandtown could once be found where University Parks is today. The neighborhood spanned from Mary Street to the Baylor Law School. Packed into these blocks were residential homes and local businesses such as Rubles’ Grocery Store, Ruben Bravo’s Produce Company, and Sunbright Waste Paper Company. Mexcian Americans lived, worked, and raised families in Sandtown. In 1958 things began to change for the residents of Sandtown as the city of Waco voted to participate in the federal urban renewal program. This program was used by local officials to clear out “slums” from the community, and they focused on Sandtown. More than 200 dwellings were deemed unlivable, and Sandtown’s residents had to relocate. So.....the other night I posted this glorious photo of our Broccoli dish and shortly after, received this message (swipe to next photo) I’m using this example because I don’t think there was any intention of being a ‘dick’ but this is what we deal with on a regular basis so wanted to share a break down so that in the future people might think before they write the comments they do. Firstly, we use organic broccoli. Most organic farms grow seasonally so the price changes often. For example, 2 weeks ago, Broccoli was $85 a box. Last week it was $25. Do we increase the price when this happens? No. We just suck it up. Secondly, this dish includes four of the most expensive plant based ingredients we use. Organic coconut yoghurt Organic hazelnuts Organic currants Organic hemp seeds If anyone is familiar with organic herbs, you will know these are also pricey. We use four different herbs in our coconut yoghurt dressing that covers the entirety of that large plate. Then there are the obvious expenses. The chef that makes that dressing, that roasts those hazelnuts and chops them up. The fridge that holds the currants and broccoli . The olive oil, salt and pepper that goes onto the broccoli before it’s roasted in an oven that I won’t mention the cost of, but let’s just say it’s not from Aldi. We should also take into consideration the staff member that brought it to your table, cleared your plate, washes your plate and cutlery and cleaned up after you. I haven’t even gotten into rent and insurances because that stuff is boring. What really erks me is that people will go to a restaurant and pay $12 for four spring rolls that aren’t organic, that are deep fried in vegetable oil and contain a few pieces of cabbage and carrot and have the nutritional value of a square root of bugger all 🤯 So please think about this before making comments about the prices we charge because everything that goes on your plate has a purpose, everything has been prepared to support your health, not damage it. We use the best possible ingredients and spend a lot of time preparing everything so that you feel fantastic eating it. - @thecookroom_manly on Instagram

A new neon artwork by Paul Wong honouring the history of Cantonese migrants now illuminates 475 Main Street in Chinatown. “Saltwater City Vancouver/鹹水埠温哥华” was developed by Wong as part of his year-long residency “身在唐人街/Occupying Chinatown” at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden (2018-19). The neon artwork displays the Chinese characters 鹹水埠温哥华, which in Cantonese translates phonetically to two names used for Vancouver. The site, between Hastings and Pender, parallel to Main Street on the west side, was chosen by public vote in January 2019. It has particular historical significance as a former location of Vancouver City Hall (1889-1929) where mayors and councillors used the legal power of the City to enact and expand laws that negatively impacted Chinese residents. “Saltwater City Vancouver/鹹水埠温哥华” is a Public Art project commissioned by the City of Vancouver Public Art Program in partnership with Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and is supported by The Prospero Group and the Audain Art Foundation. - @vanculturebc on Instagram

Marine Drive & the automobile, 1953. Archival pic from “Our Bombay,” a Dec. 1953 publication by Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) in which Prime Minister Nehru wrote: ‘A city, like a house, is not a mere collection of steel and brick, cement and mortar. It is the outward expression of the life of a community’. Marine Drive with 35 consecutive Art Deco sea facing buildings was the road to be on. The automobile brought speed, power, streamlined design, mobility and symbolised both success and affluence in a modern aspirational city. In these pics @karlbhote tells us we see a mix of primarily English and American cars. Convertibles were already falling out of favour, confirmed by only one seen at the bottom right, likely a Sunbeam Talbot drophead coupe. Since this is the pre Fiat Ambassador days, we see mostly foreign cars - majority of which were assembled in India. Ford had large scale assembly operations in Bombay. General Motors had similar operations in Sewri where Buick (retailed by Metro Motors), and Chevrolet cars (retailed by The Bombay Garage), rolled out. Dodge and Plymouth cars were assembled at Premier Automobiles Kurla facility, and retailed by The Bombay Cycle and Motor Agency which still stands at Sandhurst bridge. Across the road were the stunning modern Deco showrooms of Dadajee Dhackjee & Co, agents for Packard and Mercedes-Benz cars, at Shree Pant Bhuvan. The English were represented by Morris cars, sold by the French Motor Car Co. at New Queens Road and Hillman Minx cars were assembled by Automobile Products of India (API) at their Bhandup facility. Austin cars were sold by The Automobile Co. Ltd, also at New Queens Road. It’s Twofor Tuesday! We rarely insist that dogs be adopted together. In the case of Linus and Burty, we were hoping for that. They bonded as soon as they came in! It was our wish they would go together because they had gotten so comfortable being together (and let’s face it - they helped one other burn off energy)! Like you, our customers and community, New York Distilling Company is grappling with how to recognize the protests going on all around us, and how to make a positive difference. Within our industry, a tragedy occurred last Friday. Du Nord Craft Spirits, located in Minneapolis on the same block as a police precinct, was set on fire and then deluged with 400,000 gallons of water from their sprinkler system. The damage was devastating. Du Nord is one of the few minority-owned craft distillers in the United States, co-founded by Shanelle and Chris Montana in 2013. Chris, the immediate past President of our national association, is one of the most respected and admired leaders of our industry. We cannot lose his voice and presence. This week we are thinking of Shanelle and Chris and directing our efforts toward helping their distillery recover. We are making an initial donation today of $1,000 to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the American Craft Spirit Association, which you can find below And we hope to do more. Because of strange, frustrating and anachronistic NY State Liquor Authority regulations we are not allowed to say things like “all profits” this week will be donated. In 2014, just a few months after we met my now partner and I started looking for a house. Our dear friend, Cliff, recommended the real estate agent who had found his home, Vea Thai. Immediately we knew she was amazing. She found our home, and has, since then, been to house parties, recommended contractors, remembered holidays and birthdays with gifts for us, Felito AND Fénix our dog. She’s supported fundraisers for @darajaacademy because she deeply believes in the power of girls in leadership and education to support them. Today she said she had some tomatoes to drop off.
