This stunning watercolour was painted by the French artist Eugène Lami. Dated 1866, the work is characteristic of Lami’s richly coloured aristocratic scenes.⁠ ⁠ The figures wear late seventeenth-century costume, and the setting recalls (but does not depict) the Staircase of the Ambassadors at Versailles, built in the 1670s; the scene does not seem to represent a particular historical event.⁠ ⁠ A specialist in military scenes and watercolours of elegant society subjects, set in both England and France, Lami received much patronage from the Rothschild family for whom he was an artistic adviser.⁠ ⁠ #EugèneLami #Watercolourist #Watercolour #Painting #NineteenthCentury #TheWallaceCollection - @wallacemuseum on Instagram
