We’ve come a long way with the language we use to talk about our trans brothers and sisters, but we still have a long way to go. Billy Tipton was an American jazz musician, bandleader, and talent broker. For decades, Tipton assumed a male gender identity. Tiptons female birth sex (AFAB) was not publicly revealed until after his death, and the revelation came as a surprise to family and friends. Tiptons music career began in the mid-1930s when he led a band for radio broadcasts. He played in various dance bands in the 1940s and recorded two trio albums for a small record label in the mid-1950s. Thereafter, he worked as a talent broker. Tipton stopped performing in the late 1970s due to arthritis. Tiptons sex was reportedly concealed from the four women who would later call themselves Mrs. Tipton. Tipton kept the secret of his extrinsic sexual characteristics from them by telling them he had been in a serious car accident that resulted in damaged genitals and broken ribs. The existence of Trans people is not something new, they have always been here, are real and valid. Dora Maar, an exceptional photographer and Surrealist painter whose work for the longest time, has been overshadowed by her relationship with Pablo Picasso. Born in Paris in 1907 Maar spent most of her early life in Argentina, moving back to France at the age of 19. She studied art under the Cubist painter André Lhote soon meeting and becoming a key member of the group of Surrealists. In the 1930s her provocative photomontages became celebrated icons of surrealism. When she met Picasso in 1936 Maar was an established commercial and art photographer and she continued to create work during their relationship, famously documenting the creation of Guernica, Picasso’s most political work. She was also an inspiration for a number of Picasso’s works titled ‘the Weeping Woman’ that she came to deeply resent, saying ‘All (Picasso’s) portraits of me are lies. They’re Picassos. Not one is Dora Maar’. Throughout their nine years together Picasso continued to see other women that Maar never reconciled with. In 1946, after their split, Maar had a mental breakdown and was admitted to a psychiatric facility where she was subjected to electroshock therapy. After her battle with mental health Maar became reclusive and was largely forgotten by the art community until her death in 1997. In 2019 Tate Museum held a major retrospective of her work, #expodoramaar. Like too many other artists (Camille Claudel, Lee Krasner) Maar was defined by her relationship for far too long. No more. Last week, four museums in the US and the UK announced they would postpone a traveling Philip Guston exhibition to 2024 due to concerns about the reception of Ku Klux Klan imagery he employed in some works. As the art world debates the decision, were thinking about an essay our January-February 1978 essay, in which @robertasmithnyt addresses what was then the biggest controversy around Gustons work: his shift from abstraction to figuration in the late 1960s. Some may see this as a self-indulgent or regressive move, but in his own reclusive, schizophrenic, fragmented way, Guston is contemporary, Smith writes. One day I went to invite Rabindranath Tagore for the annual Hindi SammeIan, when he started a discussion with me During the course of our conversation he asked, “Besides teaching what else are you doing over here?” “I write stories in Hindi which are published in the leading Hindi magazines. During my stay here, I have written a lot and also earned a good name for myself.” ‘But your mother tongue is not Hindi. You are a Punjabi. Why don’t you write in the Punjabi language?” I felt that Tagore was a narrow-minded, provincial man; at that time I did not realize that an artist must first be nationally known in the true sense of the word, before he is internationally acclaimed. “But Hindi is the national language. It is the language of the entire nation. Why should I write in any provincial language, when I can write for the entire country?” I said. “I write in Bengali, which is a provincial language; yet, not only the people of Hindustan but people all over the world read what I write.” “I am not a great writer like you, I am just an insignificant writer.” “It is not the question of greatness or smallness; a writer has a relationship with his own birthplace, his people and his language. I’m not sure that I know precisely what it means to believe in love, or to be a true romantic, and in 2020 those words get even harder to decipher through our present hellscape. I do know that I hold love as a highest human value, even as it’s the most quixotic and enigmatic of virtues. _ I gave myself permission with this album to be embarrassing, to be pathetic, to be uncool, to be uncomfortably real, to be desperate and confused and naively wholeheartedly hopeful, despite piles of evidence that could easily result in cynicism. _ It feels weird putting out an album of love songs right now, and at the same time I know that we need music so intensely these days. We need to be reminded of what is beautiful and tender and hopeful about our species. I hope that this album can be a source of uplift for some of you, and for others a source of commiseration when you’re feeling alone or rejected or attacked by waves of hopelessness. _ True Romantic is out now, I hope it’s helpful.
