Alicia Alonso, the legend and inspiration for hundreds of little Cuban girls that wanted to follow her steps in becoming a ballerina. Even when many of them, like myself, embraced other forms of dance (perhaps socially less rewarded) and the controversies surrounding her personal choices; still I belive we are somewhat a reflection of her spirit of sacrifice and dedication to the craft. She captured and immortalized that essence of the cool (Gottschild) and sensuality inherent to Cuban dance derived from that unique mixture of African and Spanish gestures. Today is our parents 60th wedding anniversary. How they made it 60 years after raising 9 of us, is beyond me. Last year my nieces (@kikicarr & @hannahgruse) began archiving our family photos and I always find myself going back and looking at their wedding day. There are so many photos, but these are my favorites: the band, the just married sign, the dancing, the love. It’s like an older version of the wedding scene in “The Deer Hunter” They’d be mortified if they knew these photos were “on the computer” but my brother and I looked it up and less than 5% of marriages make it 60 years.
