Part 1- The relationship of Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer “Audrey Hepburn won’t talk about her romance. There has been a lot of malicious gossip and she is sensitive. Mel’s sensitive too. He broke a photographer’s camera at their wedding.” (Illustrated Magazine 1955) . On September 25, 1954 Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer were married at a Protestant chapel during a small, private ceremony in Burgenstock, Switzerland. Audrey wore a crown of white roses and a Givenchy tea length dress. (Many believe the dress to be by Balmain but please refer to pic 10 from the book Audrey Hepburn: A Woman, the Style by Stefania Ricci, Museo Salvatore Ferragamo and Leonardo Arte). Audrey and Mel were just coming off a successful run on Broadway playing the lead roles in Ondine. Audrey was suffering from severe exhaustion and Mel thought it was best they retire to the restorative mountainsides of Switzerland. It was during their stay that they married. In attendance was Audrey’s mother, Barroness Ella Van Heemstra. From the beginning of their relationship, Ella was not a fan of Mel and against the marriage. In a letter written to Audrey, she described him as a “frog faced delinquent with the spindly legs,” and accused him of causing sufficient havoc to last a long time. . Ella wasn’t Mel’s only critic. Rumors of divorce began circulating immediately after their wedding and Mel quickly earned the title of Svengali among the press. Mel was perceived as controlling and overly involved in Audrey’s career. He dictated who could interview and photograph Audrey, which earned the couple a reputation of being difficult amongst journalist. Yet in Audrey’s eyes, he filled a paternal void. Her father had abandoned her when she was just a child. A wound she admitted never healed, “My father leaving us is what left me insecure. [It] has stayed with me through my own relationships. When I fell in love and married, I lived in constant fear of being left.... Whatever you love most, you fear you might lose.” (Phil Donahue Show, 1990) More to come in Part 2. One of our distinguished #WSSUAlumni celebrated a major milestone birthday earlier this month. Gloria Banks shared with us that her big brother, Dr. Edward O. Diggs celebrated his 100th birthday on June 6, 2020. Notably, he was the first African American person admitted to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He currently lives in Silver Spring, MD. On #NationalDanceDay, dance like Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson and his wife Elaine! African American photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris captured this image of Bojangles and his new wife celebrating their new marriage. For over 40 years, Teenie documented the events and daily life of African Americans living in the Hill District for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the most influential minority newspapers during the mid-20th century. . By the 1920s, Pittsburgh was a mecca for entertainers and musicians who toured the country. Many Jazz greats passed through Pittsburgh or called the city home; and, as a result, the intersection of Wylie Avenue and Fullerton Street in the Hill District became known as the Crossroads of the World. There were countless clubs and dance halls in the Hill District where people came to see Jazz giants such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne and Billy Eckstine. Clubs like the Hurricane and the Crawford Grill were busy every night and Teenie was there to take in the sights and sounds, capturing the activities of a nightlife that rivaled that of Harlem. . I encounter those questions daily, as well as many additional and related questions: Whose stories are most represented in archives? How accessible are special collections and how accessible should they be? Whose voices are heard in the history of our collections? Is there a “priority” audience for access to special collections and archives? Why isn’t the role of New Orleans more elevated in the story of American popular music. What does “jazz” mean to the lay person? Is jazz the only story that is represented in the Hogan Jazz Archive? Do we do a good job at educating on the meaning and importance of archives and special collections? The Ralston Crawford Collection of Jazz Photography, one of TUSC’s most popular collections, is a snapshot into New Orleans life between 1947-1960. Photographer Ralston Crawford visited New Orleans nearly every year from 1938 until his death in 1978, and captured scenes that inspire both answers and further questions related to the subjects that B-Mike’s exhibition brings up. Today is our parents 60th wedding anniversary. How they made it 60 years after raising 9 of us, is beyond me. Last year my nieces (@kikicarr & @hannahgruse) began archiving our family photos and I always find myself going back and looking at their wedding day. There are so many photos, but these are my favorites: the band, the just married sign, the dancing, the love. It’s like an older version of the wedding scene in “The Deer Hunter” They’d be mortified if they knew these photos were “on the computer” but my brother and I looked it up and less than 5% of marriages make it 60 years.
