Illumination machine #1. From my interview with @ideatchina : [...] developed out of my interest in the Art Povera movement and Alberto Burri. His bandaged and burned textures. His mixture of aesthetic elegance and inelegant violence. And from noticing that, at a certain budget, interiors often trend towards polished opulence. I began to bandage the outside of my lamps to give them the opposite quality of the smoothed surfaces that are a signifier for luxury value. At the same time, I covered the inside of my lamps with copper gilding. So there was a turbulent skin and an opulent interior. Luxury signifiers were present but subordinated. In Illumination Machine #1 the interior is copper which has been impregnated into concrete and then oxidized to a verdigris. So again there is a luxury value which has been eroded by an aesthetic intention. - @brechtwrightganderstudio on Instagram

Artificial Intelligence is already being recognised as an invaluable tool in streamlining and automating manufacturing processes, but aside from increasing fashion’s efficiency, AI can be used creatively to produce a new, immersive world, bringing fantasy and excitement to the comparatively standard fashion video presentations we’ve been seeing. To remedy the difference in skillsets between fashion designers and computer scientists, London College of Fashion’s Fashion Innovation Agency – in partnership with Dr Pinar Yanardag of MIT Media Lab – recently launched an 8 week AI course for 20 fashion students to learn Python, a high-level programming language, and then use it to develop creative fashion experiences. The different AI applications covered by the course included: training a model to classify items of clothing and predict fashion trends from social media, using style transfer to create unique textiles, training a Generative Adversarial Network to create designs and producing a virtual fashion show which was created from archive catwalk show footage but placed in a totally new 3D environment with the models wearing new 3D-generated outfits. When Syrian student @mohamad_hafez arrived in the US in 2003 to study architecture, his passport was stamped “single entry.” A travel ban in place meant he couldn’t leave the States to return home or he’d risk not being able to complete his studies and unlock his dreams. During this time in forced exile, he says he experienced “hiraeth,” a Welsh word meaning “extreme homesickness.” Hiraeth, Mohamad says, is one of the powerful forces that drives him in his career and his creativity. Today he’s not only a successful architect, but also an artist whose work is currently on exhibit at the @brooklynmuseum. Think about that for a second. Here’s a “proud Arab American” who is literally “changing the face of American skylines” thanks to his architecture skills. But since the outbreak of the Syrian war, he’s channeled his talent and frustrations of seeing the destruction of his homeland and the plight of his compatriots into what is arguably the most intricate and indelible art relevant to our current global context. Art that is being recognized in large institutions like the Brooklyn Museum and seen by world leaders like the @unitednations Secretary General. Think about that - a 30-something Arab American architect and artist exhibiting his talents in our skylines and art galleries. THIS is what immigrants and refugees bring with them... Mohamad feels a responsibility to humanize refugees and his series “@unpackedrefugee Baggage” does just that. But don’t take it from me, go to the Brooklyn Museum and see it firsthand. Arlen Parsa, a documentary filmmaker in Chicago, edited John Trumbull’s historic painting “Declaration of Independence” (1818) to mark every man who owned slaves with a red dot: a total 34 out of the 47 men pictured, most of whom were signers of the Declaration. Out of the five-man committee that drafted the document, depicted in Trumbull’s painting handing John Hancock an early copy, only two — John Adams and Roger Sherman — did not own enslaved people. Robert Livingston, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin were all enslavers (as was Hancock).⁣ ⁣ “There were no gentle slaveholders,” Parsa told me. “Countless children were born into slavery and died after a relatively short lifespan never knowing freedom for even a minute. Jefferson, a man instrumental in creating the Declaration of Independence, held over 600 men, women, and children, in chains for his own profit. He freed less than 10, passing the rest on to his daughter as inheritance. Broxton’s textile sculptures reflect his connection to the sacred art of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, the beading traditions of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians, and his love of hip hop and graffiti. He understands his work as an ongoing investigation of cultural continuities from Africa to America and is particularly interested in how these ancient cultural forms find their way into mainstream culture. On view are boxing gloves and robe, the words Worth the Weight hand-embroidered with beads, using a backstitch, an adaptation of Yoruba beading traditions and Native American beading techniques. He also weaves in objects of power and protection, such as High John the Conqueror root, a staple in American Hoodoo traditions and other hidden talismans. Broxton’s work connects contemporary hip-hop artists to the tradition of the Oba, where lyrical quotes and personas embody superhuman power and even some, like Pusha T, who call themselves gods. This magnificent ruby was a part of the assortment of gifts that the Shah of Iran, Abbas the Great, sent to the Shah of Hindustan, Nuruddin Muhammad Salim Jahangir. This diplomatic delegation, headed by Zambil Beg, was dispatched in 1620 to raise the contentious issue of Qandahar with the Mughal emperor. No definitive reply was given; and Zambil Beg was sent back to his country loaded with lavish gifts, that included, among others, a gold coin that was colossal in both size and weight. In any case, this gesture of goodwill proved beneficial to the Safavids : only two years after, finding the Qandahar fortress in a poor state of defense, the Iranis made a sudden attack and wrested the coveted fort from the Mughals, driving away the elderly governor, Khwaja Abdul Aziz and his contingent of not more than four hundred men. Not only because of its historic association with the Mughal-Safavid political scramble, this ruby is also special because of an other reason : in this majestic stone is inscribed the names of no less than six of the multitude of its imperial masters! This cameo exemplifies the Renaissance trope of the image made by chance, where a combination of nature’s serendipity and the artist’s skill brings forth an inchoate image. See, for instance, how the pale variegated agate evokes the nocturnal landscape, and how the sculptor Alessandro Masnago used the tawny butterscotch layer in the stone to foreground the shepherdess and her flock. Famed for his ability to depict animals, the Milanese artist even smuggled an owl and a snail into this scene—small anecdotal details that reward close attention. Carved hardstones like this were highly sought after by Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. Such an image of a shepherdess in repose might have elicited a desire in a male patron to be her—to take her place, as it were, amidst the forested green. Perhaps someone like Rudolf II, amidst the great political turmoil in Bohemia in the sixteenth century, might have held this cameo up against the moonlight to admire its milky translucency and tranquility.
