Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay is expanding its services to fight asthma and assist our families to stay healthy in response to the #Covid19 health crisis by providing families with some essentials. We are distributing backpacks stuffed with resources and essential items to help ease asthma triggers, protect them from Covid-19, and ensuring children stay #safe and #healthy. We are able to provide this with the support of partners such as the Childrens Board of Hillsborough County, the CHEST Foundation, Hillsborough County, and the Tampa Bay Asthma Coalition. 🚨(Hopeful) Nerd Alert🚨 I’m about 20 years late to the party, but I started college for the first time yesterday. This year has been a mind fuck, to say the least, and while I don’t know precisely where joining the collegiate world might take me, it felt like the right thing to do. Don’t worry; I’m not going anywhere in the rum biz. I’m just trying to expand my knowledge outside the world that has motivated and inspired me for so many years. I’ve never been interested in politics until this year. Yes, I have always voted. Yes, I cried and drank half a bottle of 110 proof rhum on Nov. 8th, 2016. But it seems to me that the best way to change the corruption, inequality, and division that plagues America is to do it from the inside, so here we are, studying Political Science. Fun fact about me: I never went to middle school or high school. I was homeschooled which basically meant that I taught myself everything through a correspondence course. In fact, my elementary school was a one-room schoolhouse in Vermont and had 28 kids, K-6th grade. So I guess you could say that getting my feet wet with part-time classes that are online due to COVID is a welcome, less scary transition. For so many years, I have thought that I missed my chance to go to school, or that I would never be able to pay back my student loans, or that I was too old - but the norms have changed, and anyway, who the fuck cares. I’m not the only one using this time during COVID to go (back) to school, and it is those individuals that will keep me motivated and encourage me to spend each evening after work studying...and possibly crying...and then definitely zoom wine binging with after finals. BUGOUT ON FOOT! I had an incredible opportunity to help instruct with @fieldcraftsurvival for the bugout on foot course last week. Five days of an immersive experience to teach Bugout planning, land navigation, wilderness survival, combatives, emergency communications, tactical movement/patrolling, emergency medicine, and surveillance/counter surveillance just to name a few. Meeting such great students, watching them work hard to absorb the information, and apply it in the field was a rewarding experience I’ll never forget. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed working along side the other instructors. Our Rising Kindergarteners are ready! NAZ provided 50 Rising K scholars with a Kindergarten Kit to prepare them for their first day of school. Each scholar received a NAZ bag, stress ball, flash cards, grade level book, a personalized name tracing practice sheet with dry erase marker, a Science and Nature activity kit from Bell Museum, coloring book and colored pencils, and a certificate. They also received sunglasses, because, as our NAZ Coach Deanne says, they have a bright future baby! In a time of so much uncertainty, many students are having to seek out unconventional ways to maintain their school work without the luxury of having the necessary tools. During a caravan on Thursday, Aug. 3, Councilmember Curren Price joined Community Build, Inc. and the owners of People’s Republic of South Central, Craig Bowers and business partner Samuel Chawinga, to present five lucky students in District 9 with a huge surprise to help support them on their educational journeys, brand new Chromebooks. The group of students, selected by the nonprofit Community Build, have been through struggles no child should have to endure. The loss of both parents, one to COVID-19, having to do homework on a cell phone, having to share one device among six siblings, or trying to hone their craft in design. “With the shortage of laptops in the school system, it is the community at-large that has the power to immediately effect change not only in the way these students are able to do their school work but also has the power to connect the entire family,” said Councilman Price. “The landscape of their educational journeys has changed so much, but I am confident that they will now be on track to achieving their goals for their futures.” With a gracious donation of brand new laptops by the owners of People’s Republic of South Central, they wanted to find the best way to give back to the South LA community. “South Central is the heartbeat of Los Angeles, the community is filled with multi-generational households and front line workers; this is an idea of celebrating the hard work, values and work ethics of the people that live here,” added Bowers. “With LA bearing the brunt caused by COVID-19, we could not think of a better way to help during this time of need.” Local families in need of resources, can call Councilmember Price’s District Office at (323) 846-2651. - @cmpricecd9 on Instagram

Every weekend, 10-year-old Sabrina Martínez devotes part of her time to prepare sandwiches with her parents that she then hands out to the homeless in the streets of Charlotte. She has founded her own organization called Homies for Homeless, to help those in need. Through her action, Sabrina is not only helping the homeless, but also inspiring others to help those in need. A series of totes, backpacks and pouches, each bag is entirely unique and is designed by patching together elements from the different bags. Developing a zero waste strategy so that all off-cuts are reused for future designs and sampling. I’ve got some new followers here & I’ve never done an introduction - so here is my best shot! My name is Emory and I just moved to Jackson, MS this summer from Clarksdale, MS. I’ve been teaching for two years in the tiny little Delta town of Marks, MS outside of Clarksdale. I graduated from the University of Mississippi with a degree in Special Education and I’m currently a middle school Special Education teacher. I started painting around 4 years ago in college when I got bored over Christmas break and kept working at it. Painting is a part time thing for me, which I mainly pick back up during the summer when I have time. I’ve loved the extra time quarantine gave me to paint and it’s one of the only things that has kept me somewhat sane. Wearing a face mask can be an uncomfortable experience, especially for #kids. But, since the CDC recommends that everyone wear one in public, it’s become a non-negotiable, especially if kids are heading back to the #classroom. One thing that can make wearing a #mask more comfortable, though, is a face mask bracket. The COVID-19 accessory recently went viral after Angie Madden, a #teacher from Georgia, shared a video of her wearing one under her mask. She titled the video, “Teacher tip for all my teacher friends!.” Since she posted, the video has racked up over 31,000 likes and has been shared over 300,000 times. The exact pack of face mask brackets Madden showcases in her video cost just under $16 for a pack of three. After wearing, she says she washes them every night with water and dish soap. Sooooo we did something awesome. A few people already know this, but we BOUGHT A FRIGGIN HOUSE! It’s been a long time coming, we’ve pretty much resigned ourselves to renting for our whole adult lives up to this point, due to all the moving around, and not wanting to get tied down to a particular location, etc. We’re super stoked about our decision and appreciate all the help from friends along the way!! To explain the photos/video: my parents/lil sis joined me at closing since Nichole was out of town on a work trip, which was really great of them. Nichole finally did make it back into town a week later and we took pics again, and introduced our dog Kobe to his new fenced backyard...honestly, we bought this house for him 😂😂! Also wanted to feature my long-awaited garage which I will pretty much live in from here forward. Yesterday we had the honor of spending the day with Petronel Nieuwoudt and the @careforwild team. Petronel is a legend and an iconic figure in rhino conservation in South Africa. Her approach to rhino conservation is powerful and seeing this approach in action is absolutely inspiring. What is the biggest threat to rhinos? PEOPLE. Currently the communities perception is that rhinos are enjoyed by white, privileged tourists and celebrities. Instead heritage should be the focus and the community needs to be part of the rhino conservation solution. Protecting rhinos is about community goodwill. Strong community relationships, is stronger than any security fence. With that approach, @careforwild has become an integral part of the local community by running a variety of community projects from sports programs, youth development, giving land for agriculture and education. Porque cuando uno empieza algo tiene que comprometerse 🙌🏼 y mi socia y yo estamos con todas las ganas en esto 🤩 El camino para llegar aquí ha sido de mucho esfuerzo y trabajo en equipo, ella confió en mi para llegar a esto de tener muchas de las ventas obtenidas on line con una campaña de hormiga y yo en ella y su gran experiencia en Importaciones. Hace 6 meses yo tenía mi proyecto de kids world encaminado con muchos niños felices en sus vacacionales y fiestas hasta abril y paso esto (pandemia) y todo se vino abajo . We are so glad you were able to participate in this year’s events that allowed households and families like yours to come together and clean up our community! From the data we have received thus far for SLO County, here’s what the total are: - 246 total cleanups in SLO County. - 4,448.63 pounds were collected. - 22,613 items collected. Top 3 items: - Cigarette butts (4,708) - Plastic pieces less than 2.5 cm (3,272) - Food wrappers (3,108). Remember that the first step to a more sustainable world is looking at our consumption. During this year’s Creeks to Coast Cleanup cigarette butts, plastic pieces and food wrappers were amongst the most trash found. This can be avoided by choosing more sustainable options when purchasing products. Be mindful of your impact while grocery shopping and buying goods.
