Today is International Highly Sensitive Day! I’ve previously mentioned in a few posts that I’m a highly sensitive person or HSP. This means that I’m more sensitive to external and internal stimuli and feel things more strongly than others do. I tend to be an emotional sponge that absorbs others feelings and emotions and that often exhausts me. I am easily overwhelmed by loud noises, bright lights, strong smells, and large crowds. Tags in clothing as well as wool and other itchy materials irritate my skin beyond being uncomfortable. I am very introspective, self-aware, and process information deeply, but can be prone to overthinking. I also have vividly realistic dreams and tend to avoid movies that are scary or violent as they give me nightmares. • Along with my depression and anxiety, being an HSP can be very exhausting and overwhelming, but being sensitive can also be a strength. It allows me to be more perceptive and in tune with people as I can easily feel their emotions and read their body language. It also allows me to feel deeply, care deeply for others, and want to help make the world a better place. These sensitivities make me who I am: an empathetic, intuitive, creative, passionate, and caring person with a big heart. No matter what anyone says, it’s ok to be sensitive and it doesn’t make you weak. ❤️ • If you think you may be a highly sensitive person or think you know someone who is highly sensitive, I recommended reading The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron. Society teaches us this untrue notion that we are worthy of respect, praise, and acceptance based off our size. . I hear comments often that reiterates this message. Whether it is someone commenting negatively about their body, or telling a person they look great because they seem to have lost weight, or complimenting a stranger on how thin their figure is. Don’t even get me started on how pregnancy welcomes a slew of very inappropriate comments that cross all types of boundaries. . . It is national eating disorder awareness week, a cause very important to me. Eating disorders don’t happen in a vacuum. They’re complex illnesses, and they absolutely have no “look” and no size. You may know someone silently suffering right now. EDs have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. . While this is a complicated illness one thing I want to ask today is that you actively stop contributing to #weightstigma -this includes; complimenting people on weight loss, which tells a person they are more worthy of respect now than their before photo, (which most of the time weight is gained after dieting, bodies change + that’s ok!). Let’s also stop praising thin bodies, encouraging folx in larger bodies to take part in disordered eating behavior (restriction, over exercise, etc), and calling ourselves “fat” as if it’s a negative thing (it is not, fat is a descriptor word stop associating it with being unattractive). Body comments are invasive. We have no idea what’s going on with a person, even if it seems welcomed. When in doubt, let’s just not comment on bodies, period. . STOP HIDING BEHIND YOUR “BUSY WORK” AND JUST GET STARTED I am coming in spicy today 🌶 But it needs to be said! See you think I am not watching you, but I am. 😉 You say you want to run a successful online business but you spend MONTHS trying to perfect your website, your workflow, your application that you are COMPLETELY missing the things you ACTUALLY need to be doing. Which is just 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆! Doesn’t matter how great your website looks or how pretty your logo came out to be, if you are not showing up and putting all those skills into work, youre going to stay EXACTLY where you are today. I spent 5 months 🗓 of my business doing all the “busy” work. Trying to get the website up, trying to perfect my logos and business name trying to do EVERYTHING I could to avoid doing the things that made me feel uncomfortable. Which you may ask? ⚡️it was CONSISTENTLY investing, building a GENUINE relationship with the right IDEAL CLIENT (because let’s face it, we are all “building” relationship but then allow ourselves to get friend-zoned), and most importantly I was hoping that people would just love me for who I was so that I could avoid the dread sales call. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵? Is that resisting all of that was just me resisting the pivot and growth that my business needed? So I did that. I 𝐏𝐈𝐕𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐃 and shut those little voices out and I am so glad I did because I wouldn’t have booked out my coaching business. If you know my story, then you know that this business is my 7th ATTEMPT into entrepreneurship. YES, 7TH.🤯 And I am so glad that I just 𝗪𝐄𝐍𝐓 in and did the damn thing because I wouldn’t have been able to experience everything that I have so far. The pandemic has undoubtedly had us all reaching for our screens 📱🖥 more but do we need to worry that blue light from our screens is damaging our skin? I read a sensationalist headline this morning about this in a major British newspaper & wanted to discuss: 🔷What is blue light? Blue light is a visible light (i.e. one that our eyes can detect) that sits next to the ultra-violet (UV) part of the light spectrum & has a relatively high energy level. It’s sometimes called HEVL or high energy visible light, you might see this label on some sunscreens. Visible light makes up about 40% of the light reaching us from the sun compared to around only 4% being UV. Although visible light is lower energy than UV there is a lot more of it reaching us. We often refer to different types of light as if they are entirely different entities. This is not true, light is a continuous spectrum of different bands. We have grouped some of these bands together due to them having similar wavelengths which gives rise to similar energy levels & skin penetration. It’s similar to you tuning the dial on your radio: 90-91 FM might be radio 2, turn the dial a bit more to 92-95 FM & you hit radio 4. But there is always a fuzzy bit in-between where the 2 stations overlap. 🔷Is blue light bad for your skin? Yes, for some people. The effects are: 1️⃣ Can induce hyperpigmentation in medium to dark skin. 2️⃣ Some rare light-sensitive disorders in dermatology are triggered by visible light (e.g. porphyria). 3️⃣ Potentially contributes to premature ageing through generation of free radicals, the data on this is limited. 🔷What are the sources of blue light? The overwhelming main source of blue light that we are exposed to is the sun, the massive light source in the sky.
