Its been a while, but today was my 5th session (in 7 days) of home practice ashtanga primary series. There was a sense of loss when I started again. Wrist binding was a struggle in marichyasana D. More devastating, I had lost my supta kurmasana finger tip bind. But the silver lining was the meditative nature of ashtanga brought great satisfaction. Right arm/shoulder and left leg/hip work together, or should. . . Dannelle is a boxer who came to us with back pain / shoulder pain from a very forward rounded right shoulder. She has also been in a back brace from a very young age as she was born with a severe scoliosis and has a fair bit of metal in her back today. . . Do to this treatment for her scoliosis, her “sling” engagement never properly developed (where the upper body connects with her opposite side lower body to assist with walking and functional movement). . . Due to this, Dannelle would use her right shoulder (pecs) during her gait cycle, specifically as her left leg begins to swing through to take a step. During this swing through, the left adductors and hip flexors should connect their strength with the right side pecs and obliques in order to balance one another for smooth efficient gait. . . As you can see in the 3rd video in the before (left) her left knee points to the outside then right before she strikes the ground, she straightens it forward. That means no connection with the sling. . . Hints video numbers 1&2, great sling connection exercises to engaged her left side adductors. . . Now some tradition physical therapy might do a few things to work on adduction (bring leg in to strengthen adductors) but that will not connect the strength to her right side upper body. YOU MUST CONNECT THIS STRENGTH! . . 🔑 Think about how the human body moves. You must not only rehab but also train the body with full integrated movements, not only in isolation. . . Immediately after , straight into banded Glute bridge , 1 Glute bridge with 2 abductions at the top = 1 rep, do 12 reps. Followed by 12 dumbbell jump squats. That’s all 1 set, repeat 4 times . - Slide 3, 20 hamstring glider curls, Followed by 10 rdls feet wide toes out, 10 rdls feet close toes in, 80 meter plate sprint. Repeat 4 times. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ K9 Remington, who can be found patrolling northeastern Ohio has received a bullet and stab protective vest courtesy of a charitable donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a non-profit organization. K-9 Remington’s vest was sponsored by Don and Misty Fike of Galesburg, Illinois. Remington’s new vest reads, “Honoring those who served and sacrificed.” K-9 Remington’s partner, Officer Tammy Vanderwall, can be see patrolling Mohican, Portage Lakes, Wingfoot Lake and other state parks in northeast Ohio. “I am extremely thankful to Vested Interest in K-9s for their gracious gift to Remington,” said Officer Vanderwall. “He patrolled for more than a year without protection; I have peace of mind now that my patrol partner is protected.” Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 505-c-3 charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9s is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided more than 3,980 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations. The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old, actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the U.S. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest. Knee pain?!? ⁣ ⁣ I can’t even count the number of times I hear clients struggling with knee pain and having it prevent them from Certain movement patterns/ activities. ⁣ ⁣ If you are someone who struggles with knee pain with exercises such as lunges/ squatting here are two exercises you can use to strengthen your knee! ⁣ ⁣ TKE- terminal knee extensions- Terminal knee extension are effective in helping strengthen the quadriceps which is the muscle that extends the leg. TKE can help remove knee pain by strengthening the quadriceps muscle in extending the leg and placing less stress on the actual knee joint itself. ⁣ Here is show beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of TKE’s. All are dependent on where you are and what you are capable of. ⁣ ⁣ The second exercise is single leg eccentric box/ bench squats - you can def increase or decrease the exercise intensity by using a taller box/ bench. ⁣ Eccentric exercises strengthen not just your muscles, but also your body’s connective tissues, helping to both rehab any aches and pains as well as prevent common injuries (tendinitis) for example. ⁣ I highly highly highly suggest incorporating eccentric movements into any training regimens!⁣ Eccentric means that an active muscle is being lengthening under load. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Remember- there are ALWAYS modifications. I consider myself a strong person but I realize my body is way stronger than my mind allows it to be at times. Upon returning to Maui I was excited to start a new fitness program with a friend who has created a private specialized studio in Haiku called @121strengthstudio 1-2x a week I cycle through a handful of selected machines with high weights & slow movements for maximum of two minutes each until my muscles literally cannot move anymore. It’s amazing how my body has shown up stronger with every session so far and how I am working my mental threshold simultaneously. It’s quite an experience to move 280 lbs (that 🦵 press!) safely until my muscles go into a state where they burn and shift twitch muscle groups- helping them to grow muscle more rapidly. This workout was designed to build muscle, & is as joint friendly as possible - as this protocol was originally intended for osteoporosis patients... but works well for everyone! #flashbackfriday These are some of the last yoga pics I took of myself in yoga poses. I’ve never liked taking yoga pics. ___ This was the end of 2013! I had just closed my yoga studio in Union Square - born Bija Yoga + closed Maha Padma Yoga Temple. ___ I was recommitted to working out with my trainer @juliusmaximus24 (who took these snaps) and I was recommitted to getting my practice back in shape. ___ Owning a studio is gut wrenching, it’s draining, and there’s far too little juice for the squeeze. I lost my self during that time. When the studio closed I felt free, unburdened, and able to be myself again. Letting go of that yoga studio was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It made space for my yoga career to really take off. ___ Now with the pandemic I’ve had to say goodbye to another yoga home, but it’s made space for my teaching career to flourish yet again. Now I teach (and train) virtually and it’s been wonderful. I feel more connected to my students and more connected to my practice than I have in a long time. ___ It’s funny how when structures fall away, yoga always catches me. I’m not one for throwback posts or tripping down memory lane, so thanks for reading. Let’s talk Trikonasana - triangle pose. A common instruction heard in yoga class is, “fit yourself between two panes of glass” Would you agree? 👎🏽👍🏽 To be blunt, were not fans. Performing trikonasana between the glass can be damaging to the hip joint. In fact we know of far too many yoga practitioners in their 40s and 50s whove had hip replacement surgeries. Although genetics have a part too, these yogis all blame repeated trikonasanas (with both thighs externally rotated and pushed forward) for their hip damage. Here’s why: 🦵The hips are a ball and socket joint which means that in order for the head of the femur to rotate in the socket the femur heads need to be integrated. Tucking the tailbone way under, externally rotating both thigns, and pushing the femurs forward does the opposite of integrate. How can you create integration? Give these quick alignment tips a try and tell us how it feels: 1️⃣ From Downdog - step your right foot between your hands, spin your left heel down parallel to the back of your mat, and align your feet heel to arch. Settle all four corners evenly. 2️⃣ Tone your legs by energetically drawing your feet towards each other 3️⃣ Place both hands to the inside of your right foot and walk them off the front left corner of your mat 6-8 inches resisting in the opposite direction with your pelvis 4️⃣ Keep your pelvis back and your left thigh rotated in, place your left hand on your left hip as you draw your right sitting bone under to externally rotate your front right leg 5️⃣ Without losing that, slowly begin to straighten your right leg and move your right fingertips to the outside of your right shin 6️⃣ Stretch you left finger tips towards the sky and from your pelvis into your feet, press down into the earth and extend from your belly through your spine, arms, and head *️⃣ The most common misalignment is not taking your feet far enough apart!
