I’ve been library hopping this whole week long, exploring the rich offerings of the Los Angeles Public Library system. I’ve been to free classes and events hosted by the Central Library and quite a few of the 72 branches spread out across the breadth of our city. Through the library, I’ve joined in a book club, a writing class and a career day. I’ve seen children read aloud to a dog. I’ve learned from a master gardener how to turn the pages my columns are printed on into pots for seedlings. I’ve heard people grapple with systemic racism in a learning circle focused on the New York Times’ 1619 Project. I’ve watched volunteers helping people learn English explicate idioms: dog-tired, cloud nine, kick my butt. I’ve paid my visits while all the library system’s buildings have remained #COVID closed to the public — a physical absence that has hit people hard. But I’ve discovered through my tour that as many (real) doors have closed, other (virtual) ones have opened, greatly extending the library’s reach. Neighbors! It’s happening 💫✨ From @charlotteagenda : A new market and grocery concept called The Exchange at 36th will open this fall in NoDa, within just a minute’s walk from the light rail. The Exchange fills a need in the neighborhood, especially in this corona era — it’ll be an intimate but airy space where you can dash in to pick up milk, bread, and other grocery staples. Owner Kevin Samuel, who’s the chef at Bistro La Bon, says The Exchange will also be a casual hangout with bar and a “watering hole” for locals. The 1,400-square-foot market is Samuel’s first of two projects on 36th Street. Next door to the market is a 3,800-square-foot space that he plans to turn into a restaurant before the end of 2021. He doesn’t have additional details on the concept right now; his focus is on the market, given the current coronavirus climate. Food: The Exchange at 36th will have a pretty simple food menu with grab-and-go sandwiches and some breakfast items, including bagels. Samuel won’t fully flex his culinary skills at the market, but look out for that next year with the restaurant. Grocery items: Expect wooden racks with typical pantry supplies and artisanal goods from local vendors. There will also be fridges for eggs, milk, cheese, and more. It’s important to change what we teach and how we teach but it is also important to change who teaches. I realized recently that I have only ever had 2 black teachers. One during my pre-k years and then my painting teacher during my final year of college. The fact that I spent over 18 years in the American education system from Georgia to New York/ from Pre-K to Grad school and I only ever had two black and brown teachers is shocking! We need more people of color in our education system...particularly black male teachers. Teachers are de facto role models and they stay with us forever. I haven’t been posting much because I have been trying to listen, learn and educate myself on white privilege and systemic racism....basically I have been trying to figure out how to be an anti-racist. I have to confess that I had always misinterpreted the meaning of white-privilege. I thought since my entire family immigrated from Cuba, I had somehow escaped the history of this country and much of its shameful foundation. I now realize that the fairness of my skin actually made it easier to immigrate and for my family to assimilate (a different problem in itself). It gave me innumerable advantages I didn’t even know I was asking for. As a country built on a foundation of slavery, we need to realize that white people (whether rich or poor, immigrants or not) experience privilege. America has a 400 year record of impeding, halting and actually penalizing the accumulation of black generational wealth. The fact that an immigrant family can come to the states with nothing and build wealth in two generations while American descendants of slaves who have built this country still can’t put a down payment on a home underscores just one of the principles inherent in white privilege. My family benefited from the American education system. But like many people, I am now realizing that there was a lot that was missing. Notably a holistic view of history and a diverse faculty and student body. We need to enact giant systemic changes in this country.
