This was taken in 1999 when Justice Ginsburg met with current and former NJ State Supreme Court justices (my grandfather was one of the formers by this time). Pretty cool to see this photo in today’s NJ Star Ledger with a piece by former NJ Justice Peter Verniero about why we should all honor her. His recollection of her from this event: “She spoke plainly but powerfully. She was not one for engaging in small talk. She was one for engaging in “big talk” — for furthering bedrock principles like equal justice under the law.” I like to think RBG and my grandfather were kindred spirits. In his commencement address at Rutgers Law School in 1981 he said, “In the future, law must reflect greater empathy and understanding for human life. It must reflect a loyalty to and reverence for the common man — an understanding of human dignity and human value — not merely of use value or price... [Canadian Beta Legend] It is with deep regret the Fraternity announces the passing of Beta brother and 17th Prime Minister of Canada, John Turner, British Columbia 49. He was 91. One of Betas 85 Rhodes Scholars and a four-time gold medal winning national athlete in track (see last pic), Chick, as he was known since boyhood, was a prominent lawyer, influential speaker and savvy politician. Dubbed Canadas Kennedy and elected to parliament four times, he also served his beloved country as Register General, Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, Solicitor General, Minister of Justice, Attorney General and Minister of Finance. A delegate to Betas 108th General Convention in 1947, Turner played on six different teams that led to the Gamma Omicron Chapters back-to-back intramural championships during his undergraduate years at UBC. Loyal attendee of alumni events in the seven decades since graduation, no one could argue his love for Beta Theta Pi didn’t run deep. Our hearts are heavy as we announced today the passing of our beloved Mayor Ron Smith. Mayor Smith courageously battled pancreatic cancer for almost two years. He was officially sworn in as the 25th Mayor of Sparks on November 13, 2018. Mayor Smith leaves behind his beloved wife Karen of 40 years, four children and nine grandchildren. The Civil War affected the everyday lives of many people on the Cumberland Plateau. Lots of families lived on farms in isolated places. Many people just wanted to be left alone, but homeowners had to be on the watch for strangers. Marauding confederate or union soldiers would kill people, kidnap teenage boys to make soldiers out of them, steal food and livestock, and destroy crops and burn homes. Julia Marcum was sixteen years old when she lived with her family on a farm near No Business, Tennessee. One evening, her father who was a union sympathizer, hid in the barn when he heard that confederate soldiers were in the area. On her way upstairs to get candles, Julia grabbed an ax to defend herself if necessary. A soldier followed her up the steps. Julia hacked at him with the ax. The soldier stabbed and blinded her in an eye with his bayonet then shot her at close range, hitting and destroying a finger. When her father heard the commotion, he stormed into the house and shot and killed the soldier. When word of the incident reached a unit of confederate soldiers who were stationed nearby, they sent their physician to dress her wounds. Julia healed well enough to teach school for a number of years following the war. Eventually, the war wounds festered to the point that she could no longer work. Julia petitioned congress to grant her a pension since she was unable to teach due to her wounds. In 1884, by a special Act of Congress, Julia Marcum became the only woman to receive a pension for active civil war duty. She received $35 a month. Julia became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization whose members fought on the union side during the war. Because she so bravely defended her family against marauding confederate soldiers, Julia was considered to be a union soldier. Today City Attorney Herrera filed civil lawsuits against 28 known drug dealers in the Tenderloin to combat the open-air drug dealing that is plaguing the neighborhood. San Francisco is experiencing an opioid epidemic, and this year weve already had 81 drug overdose deaths in the Tenderloin alone. The injunctions filed today target specific dealers who come from around the Bay Area to sell hard drugs like cocaine, fentanyl and heroin to San Francisco residents. The lawsuits would prohibit them from entering the Tenderloin. Violations would have civil and criminal consequences. While this step is not a silver bullet to fix this problem entirely, it gives law enforcement officers another tool to keep Tenderloin residents safe. I am a senior industrial and systems engineering student minoring in sustainability and math. I took ISE 491: Consumer Products Sustainability and Engineered Systems over Winter J Term because I wanted to gain first hand experience of solving environmental problems in a developing country. * * Eight engineering students, five cities, one bus and infinite memories. Through our j-term course, we are learning about the issues in sustainability and India’s methods of improvement. At IIT Delhi, we learned about how they divert 93% of their waste sent to landfill through recycling and composting processes. Sustainable initiatives are promoted throughout India and fights to improve air pollution, climate change and overfilling their landfills. We visited Delhi and Agra on our first five days. At the Delhi Museum, we saw artifacts as old as 3000 BCE! We strolled through artisan markets and ate flavorful Indian cuisine. We toured the Agra Fort and watched the sunset at the Taj Mahal. We rode tuk tuks in the chaotic roads and observed the street culture. With it only being day 5 out of 14, we have learned so much about India’s culture and its tackles on sustainability issues. The Australian government has failed to meet important commitments to protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous peoples, Human Rights Watch said today in a submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Australia’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) has been rescheduled from November 2020 to January 25, 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Australian government hasn’t always followed through on its pledges to the UN Human Rights Council,” said Elaine Pearson, Australia director at Human Rights Watch. “During the review, UN member countries should remind the Australian government that it needs to do much better, especially in safeguarding the basic rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous people.” Read more at HRW.org. - @humanrightswatchau on Instagram
