Last week I took my mom to the Popgala Noord where we were awarded a Lifetime Achievement award. I specifically thanked our parents for their continuous support. In our formative years we were completely oblivious to 95% of actual life, obsessing over a (then impopular) subgenre of an underground dance music style. We were afforded all the freedom do pursue this by those who came before us. My parents have always believed in me and withthout them none of this would have happened. PS: It is strange to get a lifetime achievement award in your mid thirties. Its also strange to get it because you quit something (more or less). But now Im looking forward to new projects! What do we miss if we’re not willing to evolve? I almost missed out on love. I can’t talk about inclusion and belonging unless I’m willing to be honest about how hard it was for me to embrace my whole self. I spent years convincing myself that I wasn’t gay. I’d had a hard enough time growing up and being taunted for being an “Oreo” (black on the outside, white on the inside), why would I add gayness to my stack of difference? Thankfully, I evolved with the help of my village. People who helped me see that to struggle against who I was would be to waste the precious energy needed to achieve my hopes and dreams. Our wedding took place a day after the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision, thanks to legions who stood up and said love is love. You will not erase us. Our ceremony took place at Princeton University, a school I would not have been able to attend without the brave children who integrated schools across the United States. You will not hold us back. Without the many battles fought for freedom, I would not be here as an openly gay, black female. There is more ground to cover. I’m so glad that I’m not wasting energy hiding who I am, or who I love. The Maasai are known for their bright clothing, ornate beaded jewelry, fierce warriors, and lively music and dance. They are also known for storytelling. The Maasai do not record their history and customs in writing. Instead, they rely on oral storytelling to pass knowledge and information down through generations. At Kakenya’s Dream, we believe keeping our girls connected to their Maasai heritage is important, so we’ve woven it into our curriculum at KCE I and II. Since grandmothers are the proud keepers of Maasai cultural knowledge, we invite them to do story time with our students throughout the school year. In doing so, they keep the tales of Maasai history alive and teach our girls the art of how to become a storyteller. It has become a beautiful way for our community to embrace shared culture and ensure that youth learn and can pass their history down to future generations. We bring you the sad news that John Bryant, former president of Thames and member for over fifty years, died last night. A note from his son Matthew: Thank you to all members of Thames who were part of his times with the club - you brought him friendship, competition, laughter and many, many good evenings of conversation, and occasionally song. If he had an epitaph it might well be: To run with the Hare and Hounds was his pride and his joy, to sport the old saltire and to race like a boy, for when the sun shone on his saltire his joy knew no bounds, so lets all drink good health to the Thames Hare and Hounds. 1. Varsity Match dinner menu with John speaking as Oxford Captain. 1966 Quite simply, John Bryant was one of the great Thames men, giving over 50 years of unstinting service to the club. He joined Thames in 1967 straight from Queen’s College, Oxford. While at Oxford, he competed 3x in the Tortoises-Spartans cross-country race, and once in the 3,000SC varsity at White City. At Thames, he was vice-captain from 1972-73 and then club captain for four seasons from 1973 until 1977, and served as our seventh President from 2010-15. On the competitive front, he was one of our foremost runners during the 1970s and early-1980s when we started to emerge as a competitive force in local and regional competition. In 1976 he was one of the scoring six (who coincidentally had all been involved in the 1966 Varsity Match) when we pulled off an unheralded second place in the Southern Cross-Country Championships at Parliament Hill. Professionally, John was a journalist and worked for The Daily Mail, The Times, The Sunday Correspondent and The European, concluding his career as Editor of The Daily Telegraph. As well as his London Marathon history, he produced a number of books on athletics, including 3:59.4: The Quest to Break the 4 Minute Mile; The Marathon Makers; and Chris Brasher: The man who made The London Marathon. - @thameshh on Instagram
It was such a pleasure meeting 7th grader Omar Germany and his amazing parents Omar Sr. And his lovely wife Lennise Germany with our superintendent Addison Davis today. Omar was recently diagnosed with cancer in March 2020 and he’s an incredible Kid that plays QB and is a huge @UF fan, so of course I had to FaceTime My friends at UF Admissions office to let them know that we’re going to do everything we can to make Sure that this 12 year old with a dream to be a Florida Gator becomes a reality in a few years. They Assured me and Omar and his family that we will Make sure he’s A Gator when he Graduates from High School. Thanks for a fantastic meeting. One of my favorite photos of all time — this might be too personal for my business page, but I think it’s a good reminder for everyone to take time to capture life’s small moments. Even though I’m a professional photographer, I often forget to capture the people who mean the most to me, but one day in June, I suddenly felt this urge to take a picture of my grandparents before they went on their daily walk. It’s become a photo I treasure so much. My grandpa sadly passed away today and it’s memories like this that are what we hold onto after people go — make sure to hold your loved ones close and capture them when you can. August 19, 2020 #worldphotographyday Watching young black men and women ask the question, “Why?” has not been a new phenomenon to me. Frustrations around disenfranchisement, stop and frisk, poverty, police shooting resulting in deaths, have made some African Americans seek ways to channel these frustrations. The result has always taken on different forms, but to me, it has always sought to answer the question, what makes us different? I watched moments in this protest as young black men walked up and down streets confronting columns of police officers asking sometimes, and demanding in other times, a response to the questions, “Why do you hate me? “Why do you support in justice against us?” and in other cases, they have donned posters that evoke a voice of intent when they think that their own voices have gone unheard. Our tools of engagement rise from the fact that it has become normal to watch the destruction of black bodies on social media, without any repercussion to the perpetrators of our demise. To this day we have heard nothing about Breanna Taylor. Our ongoing relationship with the police forces all over this country has been one marred with images of policed dogs, tear gas, rubber bullets the baton, a tight chokehold a knee and in some cases deaths. Please read: We visited a family on one of my first days in Tanzania. The mother of this lady had just died 3 days ago from HIV before I took this picture. The father has been gone for a while. On her back is her young child. She is now left alone to care for her child & 3 siblings. This picture was taken moments before we visited the grave of her mother right behind the house. Tears, screaming, mellow wining from the baby too. Death is something different over there, but it’s still death after all. Являюсь председателем жилищного кооператива «Соседи» (Иркутский тракт, 191) и территориального общественного самоуправления ТОС «Молодёжный» (6 многоквартирных домов, 1 500 жителей). ⠀ Вместе с соседями я: • создал ЖК «Соседи» и привел в порядок свой дом; • организовал ТОС «Молодёжный» для благоустройства микрорайона и взаимодействия с властями; • начал обустройство спортивной площадки в микрорайоне в рамках конкурса «Лучший ТОС»; • организовал жителей и добился установки пешеходного перехода и знаков ограничения скорости на Иркутском тракте, 185; • собрал 2 000 подписей жителей против строительства мусоросортировочного комплекса в конце Иркутского тракта; • поднимал проблему запаха и незаконных стоков с КНС в нашем районе; • организовывал и участвовал в местных и выездных совещаниях по проблемам района с Администрацией города; • добился устранения новой свалки на закрытом полигоне вблизи Новомихайловки; • стал одним из организаторов Томской ассоциации местного самоуправления, в которую вошли более 30 председателей ЖК, ТСЖ и ТОС; • принимаю жителей по различным вопросам каждый понедельник; • организовывал субботники, праздники, открытые тренировки и посадки деревьев; • также в 10-14 годах я проводил одни из самых крупных уличных акций за ЗОЖ в истории Томска и руководил добровольческим движением Брат за Сестру. ⠀ Став депутатом, я планирую: • Представлять и отстаивать интересы жителей округа. • Внедрить проект «Открытая дума», предусматривающий участие жителей Томска в принятии решений Думой. • Развивать местное самоуправление и ЖКХ: помогать жителям выстраивать работу с УК, создавать активные советы домов, ЖК, ТСЖ, ТОС, наводить порядок в домах и дворах. • Создавать комфортную городскую среду и улучшать благоустройство территории округа. • Снизить дефицит городского бюджета: создать комиссию по привлечению инвестиций в город, снизить затраты на обслуживание муниципальной собственности, провести аудит унитарных муниципальных предприятий. - @zabelinmax on Instagram

I am a wife and a mother of 8 children. My mother, who is in her 80’s also lives with us and she is sickly. I also take care of Karanja, James and Alex who I have raised since they were very young boys. We all live here on this small piece of land that we were given by the government. Three of my children managed to finish high school and have moved out, two were not able to finish primary school because of limited finances, while the others are still ongoing with school. I live with most of my children here at home, and we have been trying to get them jobs so they can be independent. . The greatest kindness I have received has been from Flying Kites. They have educated Karanja, James and Alex, and my son, Maara, who was in Flying Kites Academy. For this I am truly grateful. . The biggest challenge I have felt is that I am not able to raise these children as I would have wished to, especially with the limitation of resources. I also cannot quite say I have yet experienced a day where I was truly happy. It is also really difficult for me to see that I am not in a position to help myself, let alone the children. Oftentimes, I receive help from my neighbors, they give me food, lately they have also supported me financially by paying for my medical bills as I have been sickly. My joints are in pain, I also get dizzy. The doctors are yet to find out what is happening to me. . It is really tough for me because I know I am financially unstable. JOHN ROBERT LEWIS (1940-2020) Terrible news hearing about Congressman Lewis passing. The true definition of a hero, especially at a time when we need people like him. The truth is theres never gonna be another person like him. You felt this when you were around him. Was fortunate enough to spend some time with him a few years ago over at San Diego Comic Con where his graphic novel March was released. And saw him lead the the entire convention floor made up of young children, as well as cosplay the same way he was dressed back in the historic 1965 Selma march. He was one of a kind. Wish I couldve spent more time with him but feeling more than fortunate to have graced his presence once in my life. Much love to his family and friends. Sudanese are banned from coming to the U.S. (Yes, I know that Piol is now in South Sudan, but it was part of Sudan until South Sudan officially broke away and created a separate country in 2011). 2. Refugees, seeking asylum, are being detained, arrested, separated from children, caged, interned or secretly shipped off to different states in the dark of the night. If this had been the case when Bol, his cousin Jok and other Lost Boys and Girls were seeking refuge, none of them would now be United States citizens. Yesterday, debated between studio time and time at the neighbors, took my camera next door. “Mama,” I said, “I want to make your portrait.” Mom, head bent toward her lap, read a short story. Dad was on the other side of the table, head also down but in the opposite direction. I tried for a composition of their grey heads angling away from each other. Dad glanced over. I snapped that too. “Dad,” I said, “look at Mom again.” Dad gazed at Mom as I took pictures. “How did I find you?” Mom read on quietly. Today I woke up to some great news in the world when I heard on @npr that the continent of Africa is now free of wild polio, a naturally occurring virus in the environment. During my time as a staff photographer @rotaryinternational I covered assignments on the efforts to eradicate polio in India and Africa. This series of images are from my time in Cote d’Ivoire documenting @WHO officials, the Minister of Family Affairs, technicians monitoring and transporting the polio vaccine from the National Institute of Public Health in Abidjan, health workers going door to door in search of children to immunize, mothers patiently waiting with their children to be vaccinated, lab workers at the Pasteur Institute testing for and storing samples of the wild polio virus.
