Because today marks 4 years since this picture was taken. Because I woke up this morning feeling extra healthy and grateful for the sunshine. Because I want you to remember, even if just for this weekend, that life is so freakin beautiful and precious. Love y’all. . This picture was taken a few months after my kidneys started failing. A few weeks after shingles took over my central nervous system and spread to my brain. A few days after strokes left my body temporarily paralyzed and - though able to hear -unable to move or speak out loud for hours. Ill never forget my husbands face and voice that night, pure panic. Not being able to communicate back to him that I was still alive and loving him felt like a living nightmare. . That year my carefully crafted world came to a screeching halt without my consent. Every day I was losing weight, hair, vision, memory. Concentration, sleep, patience, sanity. . Sometimes the emotions of the RIGHT NOW make you forget that its been worse, and youve survived even your darkest days. Its hard man, but We Just Do. With hope, with humiliation, with honesty. My journey with heart failure is still so young at this stage. I’m 28 years old, and was completely healthy until the end of 2018. I got a chest infection early November which cleared up quickly but then mid December I started getting similar symptoms. I ignored it over the festive period but ended up back on antibiotics again just after Christmas. Skip forward to the 19th Jan and I got my mum to take me to A and E because I could hardly breathe. It took a whole plethora of tests and needles to make the decision that I may have dilated cardiomyopathy or Myocarditis. Docs still can’t give me a reason for this- could be a viral infection but it couldn’t be proved! We tried to get me home on tablet medication but I went down hill again very quickly. Now I’m confirmed active on the urgent transplant list and I’m waiting for a new heart at hospital. - This is Yadira Arroyo, a 14-year veteran of the New York Fire Department and a mother of five sons, who was responding to a call, when they were flagged down by a pedestrian about a theft. Arroyo got out of the vehicle and a man darted into the drivers seat and ran over her. Today is her funeral.
My dad is my favorite person on Facebook. He doesn’t do dad jokes, but occasionally posts dirty, teenage jokes which make me shake my head and giggle. I love his political posts and his ability to engage in civil discourse with people who disagree with him (for the most part 😊) To my knowledge, I am the only person who feels that way about a parent on social media. He is a million times cooler than I gave him credit for growing up. Age and perspective have made me appreciate the tenacity and inner strength it takes to be sober for nearly 40 years, graduate college while working full time and being a dad, staying in incredible physical shape and surviving cancer. The older I get, the more I realize that he is the epitome of what it means to #livestrong and #livekind . He never let his cancer define who he was. He believed in good food, dancing and amazing music like Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Daft Punk. My Brothers legacy will be with us forever and its up to us to continue to make a difference for all of those families fighting the fight. Well, it’s official, after two very long days at the hospital (15+ hours total), I have 4 cancer demons and a blood clot near two of them. Two are above my heart (biopsy Monday), one is dangerously close to a major blood vessel connected to my heart and the other is pushing on a nerve from my T4 vertebra, but not pushing on my spinal cord (thankfully). Radiation starts Monday for the spine, they gave me 3 tiny tattoos to mark the radiation location because it is a bit dodgy getting to them as they are pretty deep inside of me. I’ve had 4 scans, 6 blood draws and an IV full of contrast to locate the demons. My doctors, nurses and surgeons are are all here for me 4 years later and they worked tirelessly the past two days to figure out what’s happening. Needless to say, I am feeling eternally grateful! All of this just before my 49th birthday on Sunday. Whew, emotions were all over the map! Despite the news sounding bad, my docs are confident we caught them all early enough to destroy them! I have been overwhelmed and overjoyed by all of the love and support from all of my dear friends, family members and people I barely know, and for that I am forever grateful and deeply appreciative! I’ve been through some of the heaviest heartache in my life in the past several years, and I had been moving through it really well because of therapy and all of you, and this time I’m going to crush it again because me and the universe have plans!!! Even with everything that has happened in Minneapolis and the pandemic, I know we will get through all of the hatred and destruction, and build ourselves back up through unity, positivity and the kindness of strangers. I have seen it happening and the TV and most of social media is just a pile of digital garbage. ‘Five years ago I was just about to start my second job of the day. I staggered out of my van clutching my chest, with pain every time I breathed. Within seconds you begin to realise whats happening. This was almost my last day. I typically tried to combat the pain by slowing my breath and trying to think strong, but the pain I felt was having a different say. I fell down and tried getting up and fell again.⠀ ⠀ I saw a woman near the arch of the car park, she shouted ‘Ill get some help’, but by this time the strength began to drain and, as the pain in my chest took over, I thought ‘yep, this is it.’ All I remember is darkness and voices, but sometime later I woke in the ambulance still in the car park, with two medics going through the motions.⠀ ⠀ Within an hour at @epsom_sthelier in resus they decided to send me to St. Peters Hospital. They blue lighted me all the way there, where I was given a 50% chance of making the week. The one thing that kept me going was the care I received — it was constant no matter whether I was at Epsom, St Peter’s, or eventually @stgeorgestrust where I had my operation — the NHS staff were absolutely amazing. I was in the best possible place and I could never thank them for what they did for me. I felt safe when so much was at stake and, five years later, this man is a force to be reckoned with.⠀ ⠀ I will never forget every single member of staff who was involved with my care prior to, during and after my triple bypass surgery. Without the NHS, I would never have made it.’⠀ ⠀ This #WorldHeartDay, Rob describes the moment he realised he was having a heart attack, and how #OurNHSPeople supported and cared for him every step of the way. Not only that, but the most common symptoms are all too often brushed off - by us, by our doctors, by both - as stress, indigestion, getting older, you name it. . ✨ So, all month, I will be sharing! ✨ What questions do you have? What do you want to know? It’s always open season for questions to me, but *especially* this month! . OVCA is known as the “silent killer” because it’s symptoms are so easily misdiagnosed as other, more benign concerns. 💔 That’s why I care so much about you knowing your risk, and knowing the symptoms! #earlydetectionsaveslives . Cancer sucks. Every single form of it. It destroys our loved ones. But one cancer that my family has become to hate the most is Uterine Cancer. My mom is heading into her 4th or 5th (there have been so many I can’t keep up!) round of Chemo. Her team of doctors keep switching up the type of chemo because unfortunately there is NO CURE for her type of cancer. This fucking sucks. My mom is a fighter and she has beat cancer before and will fight this no matter what it takes. But! Wouldn’t it be nice if we could raise funds to help doctors find a cure? If you are able to, please donate to a cancer research foundation. There are many! The Mayo Clinic is a good start.
