In 1879, British Traveller R. W. Felkin witnessed and documented the procedure whereby a chief practitioner and his assistants used surgical methods such as anaesthesia, antisepsis, cauterisation and wound closure, using tools fashioned from natural resources. Although not the first documentation of a caesarian section in history, the complexity of the procedure carried out quite commonly in the Bunyoro Kingdom of Uganda at this time significantly predates modern medicine. This shows that medical intuition and innovation was by no means limited to the influence of the Western World. I am personally thrilled to announce that I am curating an exhibition of print and textile-based works by acclaimed artist Louise Bourgeois that will be scheduled in our museum during the next academic year of fall 2021/spring 2022. Please stay tuned for more details regarding the exhibition titled The Labor of Remembrance. In association, I am pleased to present a special selection of works by Ruth Zuckerman in the Ruth Zuckerman Pavilion, as both artists share unique themes of the familial. Renowned for her fluid and organic sculptures which many times present stylizations of the human figure, Ruth Zuckerman’s work explores universal themes of family and protection, as seen in “Son Worshipper”. The work of Louise Bourgeois explores aspects of the human condition and the familial as well, through depictions of anxiety, fear, helplessness, and extreme vulnerability. The etching “Do Not Abandon Me” by Bourgeois, presents a single female figure watching as her child hovers on the verge of dissolution. If not for the umbilical cord that tethers and ultimately unites the two, desertion would be imminent. “I always had the fear of being separated and abandoned. In dem Buch erzählt er, wie er vom Schweizer Chemiker zum prominenten Entdecker einer der bekanntesten psychedelischen Drogen wurde.⁠ ⁠ Hofmanns legendärer LSD-Trip gilt heute als Entstehungszeitpunkt der modernen Drogenkultur und Heureka-Moment der Wissenschaft. Der trippende Chemiker, der auf LSD und Fahrradsattel in eine farbenfrohe Zukunft fährt, ist die Krippenszene der Acid-Heads. Jedes Jahr am 19. April, dem sogenannten Bicycle Day, wird das Ereignis überall in der Welt mit Paraden, Konzerten, Partys und Umzügen gefeiert. Käthe Kollwitz was a German artist whose artworks often depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism. / . “The boy and the Tiger” - quem quiser saber um pouco mais dos meus pensamentos sobre essa ilustra já fica o alerta de ~textão. Desde que conheci a história do Yonlu fiquei impactada. Quando vi o filme dele em 2018 fiquei falando dele por meses. Pode ser o choque de não ter encarado a morte de perto ainda e de repente ter me deparado com uma história tão triste, de algo que aconteceu relativamente próximo de mim, na minha cidade, em um colégio da mesma rede que o meu, de uma pessoa especialmente jovem e tão talentosa. Esses tempos voltei a ouvir as músicas dele e lembrei que gosto muito do som, pensei que queria produzir algo em cima disso. A minha música preferida do Yonlu é “The Boy and The Tiger”, então quis trabalhar em cima disso. (além disso eu tinha recentemente terminado de ver o documentário “Tiger King” do Netflix e tava bem a fim de inserir elementos de tigre em tudo que eu produzia) A primeira vista podem parecer temáticas completamente diferentes, mas pra mim elas conversam no aspecto selvagem que possuem. A selvageria se mostra em diferentes aspectos das nossas vidas. Na violência policial, na fome, no egoísmo, no racismo, na misoginia, na pobreza, entre muitos outras problemáticas dos dias de hoje. O resultado desse caos moderno culmina muitas vezes na depressão; que leva as pessoas a cometerem um dos atos mais selvagens de todos, o suicídio. Não é fácil falar sobre todas essas coisas que nos rodeiam, na verdade é muito cômodo fingir que elas não existem enquanto conseguimos virar a cara pra elas e nos esconder no conforto das nossas bolhas. Por coincidência estamos entrando no mês de setembro. O setembro amarelo, conhecido como mês da prevenção ao suicidio, é uma proposta que tenta escancarar essa problemática na sociedade. O ideal é que esse tema não fosse um tabu, e que fosse debatido e abordado sempre, e não que ele tivesse destaque apenas durante um mês do ano... pelo menos já é um passo na direção certa. The Drennen Centre at Wesley’s Glen Waverly campus is a state-of-the-art facility replacing the building lost to fire in 2016. It’s named in honour of the College’s 16th Principal Dr Helen Drennen AM, the first female Principal in the history of the College. @wesley_college_melbourne It was officially opened last week by the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC. @vicgovernor It is the new home to the portrait of Dr Helen Drennen AM, oil and earth on linen 122.5cm x 102cm, 2019. Earth gathered from the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School, Kimberleys Special thanks to @varendorff for the loan of the vase in painting the still life. Painting photographed @melbournemuseumphotography Launch photography @thestevieyoung Dr Helen Drennen recently completed a 15 year term as Principal of Wesley College, Melbourne, the first female to have been appointed to the role in the College’s 153 year history. Whilst Principal of Wesley she established the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School together with her Bunuba partners. Throughout her career she has had many educational leadership roles, including Academic Director for the International Baccalaureate (IB) and IB Regional Director for Asia Pacific. She was a member of the International Baccalaureate Board of Governors from 2009 – 2015. Since 2003, when she was appointed to Wesley, she has led many new developments including the establishment of the Wesley College Institute for Innovation in Education in 2005, the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School with her Bunuba partners in 2010, and the re-establishment of boarding at the College in a new contemporary model called Learning in Residence. She is currently a member of the Monash University Council. I CANI DEI GONZAGA Nella Camera degli Sposi, sulla parete della Corte sotto la sedia del marchese Ludovico II Gonzaga è ritratto il suo amato cane Rubino. Lanimale morì il 7 agosto 1467 e laddolorato Gonzaga gli fece costuire una lapide con inciso un epitaffio in latino che iniziava Rvbinvus catvlvs... . I Gonzaga ebbero infatti una vera passione per i cani, sia da caccia che da compagnia, i quadrupedi divennero parte della vita di corte e infatti li troviamo molto spesso rappresentati vicino ai loro padroni in numerosi affreschi che ornano le sale del palazzo e in diversi ritratti.
