4 years ago I was in therapy for Crippling Depression fighting everyday to convince myself that my life was worth living for. 4 years ago I was fully prepared to leave all my loved ones behind before my last graduation. 4 years ago I came to college as a Business major and one fateful night I took a trip that changed everything in this life I had ever known. This past weekend I graduated a Philosophy Major with a concentration in religion and a minor in Psychology; heading into the field of human services with a divine passion for psychedelic medicine. They’re the reason I’m here today to type these very words out. A famous scientist named Stanislav Grof once said, “psychedelics are to psychology what the microscope is to biology or the telescope to astronomy.” We fear what we don’t understand, but when we let our fear become our curiously we create a whole new world entirely. Thank you to all the people who have made the last 4 years of my life a testament to why it was worth it to keep pushing forward. I was commissioned by @edinburghmedicalschool to create this image. It is a reimagining of a Rembrandt painting from 1632 called ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Nicolaes Tulp’ (swipe to see it) a copy of which hangs in their Department of Anatomy. The original shows a group of male medical students and teacher gathered around a cadaver. It was decided to reproduced this image with contemporary women medical students who represent the Edinburgh Seven who were the very first British women medical students 150 years ago. Being women they were at that time not allowed to graduate so were rightly honoured at last year’s posthumous degree ceremony. It was a tough job to shoot in a short period of time but I loved being part of redressing the balance. Its new home is the Sophia Jex-Blake common room in the Chancellor’s Building at Edinburgh BioQuarter. Be sure to check it out next time you are passing. The contemporary medical students are; Simran, Izzie, Sorna, Ella, Mei Yen, Caitlyn, Megan alongside Teaching Fellow in Anatomical Science, Alethea. Liam kindly modelled the cadaver. Es ist als Lehrerin ein bisschen wie als Journalistin: Jedes Jahr gibt es dieselben Themen, immer und immer wieder. Die Kunst ist dann, das Ganze ein bisschen neu zu erzählen. Es irgendwie frischer zu machen, als im Jahr zuvor. Bei den Frauenmagazinen war ein „Jedes-Jahr-grüßt-das-Murmeltier“-Thema zum Beispiel die Cellulite im April. Als Kunstlehrerin sind es jetzt im Oktober die Herbstbasteleien. Ich mag Kastanienmännchen.
