🔍 FOCUS SUR // FOCUS ON 🔎 Vincent van Gogh, La Méridienne ou La Sieste (1889-1890): La méridienne fut peinte lors du séjour de Van Gogh à Saint-Rémy de Provence alors quil était interné dans un asile. La composition est reprise dun dessin de Millet pour les Quatre heures de la journée. Vincent justifie sa démarche à son frère Théo : Cest plutôt traduire dans une autre langue, celle des couleurs, les impressions de clair-obscur en blanc et noir. Van Gogh a copié à de nombreuses reprises des oeuvres de Millet quil considérait comme un peintre plus moderne que Manet. Fidèle à la composition originale jusque dans les détails de la nature morte du premier plan, Van Gogh fait pourtant complètement sienne cette scène de repos qui symbolise chez Millet la France rurale des années 1860. Cette retranscription personnelle se fait essentiellement par une construction chromatique fondée sur le contraste des couleurs complémentaires bleu-violet et jaune-orangé. Malgré le caractère apaisant du sujet on y retrouve lintensité unique de lart de Van Gogh. . Vincent van Gogh, The siesta (1889-1890): The siesta was painted while Van Gogh was interned in a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy de Provence. The composition is taken from a drawing by Millet for Four Moments in the Day. To justify his act, Vincent told his brother Theo: I am using another language, that of colours, to translate the impressions of light and dark into black and white. Van Gogh often copied the works of Millet, whom he considered to be a more modern painter than Manet. Remaining faithful to the original composition, even down to the still life details in the foreground, Van Gogh nevertheless imposes his own style upon this restful scene which, for Millet, symbolized rural France of the 1860s. This highly personal retranscription is achieved primarily by means of a chromatic construction based on contrasting complementary colours: blue-violet, yellow-orange. Despite the peaceful nature of the subject, the picture radiates Van Goghs unique artistic intensity. . Back in the 18th century when big parts of the world were undiscovered many explorers traveled the world in search of paradise islands with eternal sunshine and exotic - and erotic - inhabitants. Many painters joined the explorers and documented the encounters with the unknown which at the same time served as an illustration of western civilizational superiority. #WorldRhinoDay2020: Rhinos, it so happens, have carved a long and illustrious existence on the planet and used to be rather numerous, speciose, and widespread once upon a geological period in time. Several diverse species of rhinos have existed through the different stages of their evolutionary history spanning 30-34 million years. The largest and one of the first known rhino species to occur was the Paraceratherium which weighed up to 20 tonnes and stood 5 m. tall at the shoulder. It is known to be the largest land mammal to have ever lived! The origins of rhinos can be traced back to the group of animals called perissodactyls which were odd-toed hoofed animals or ungulates. Interestingly, the perissodactyls also happen to be the ancestors of present day horses, zebras and tapirs! The last of the woolly rhinos which lived alongside modern humans, are believed to have perished as recently as 10,000 years ago, as per the fossil record. According to reports, up until the early 20th century, nearly 500,000 rhinos roamed the grassy savannah habitats in Asia and Africa. Today, between the five extant rhino species - black rhino and white rhino in Africa and the greater one-horned rhino, Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino in Asia - only 27,000-30,000 individuals remain. Rampant poaching for the horn, rapid habitat loss and climate change now threaten to wipe away these last vestiges of the glorious rhino lineage forever.
