10 years ago, I graduated from San Diego State University with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had a marketing degree, a round trip ticket to Costa Rica, and maybe $1,000 to my name. On our trip, @paulgoodman and I stumbled upon two bracelet vendors named Jorge and Joaquin who sold us 400 string bracelets to take back to California. When Paul’s dad picked us up from LAX, we could not stop talking about the epic Costa Rican surf, but also about the trash bag filled with string that we would not let out of our hands. We had no clue how we would sell these bracelets, but within two weeks we had sold them all and were placing another order with Jorge for 1,000 more. Since that moment, I never questioned our vision, dedication, or commitment to making @puravidabracelets something that everyone could be a part of. Today is our 10th Birthday, and I am so proud to surround myself with the most amazing team in La Jolla, artisans throughout Central America, and millions of customers globally. Its been a very busy month in Portland. One month ago, we reopened @laperlitapdx as a way of providing a place where folks could pick up their coffee order in exchange for a cup of coffee. We did this with the hope that it would save us a few delivery trips around the city while allowing us the opportunity to reconnect with our post-covid coffee community. So far, our experiment has far surpassed our wildest expectations. Turns out, the message, values, and beliefs of Reforma and La Perlita have resonated so strongly with our BIPOC community that the last 2 weeks alone have allowed for us to go through coffee much faster than we had forecasted. [Social Dilemma] Ketika lagi menghadapi sebuah situasi, pernah gak sih muncul pertanyaan “yang bener yang mana sih?” Gak usah soal informasi pandemi ini ya, soal pilihan makanan sehat, ilmu parenting, sampai pilihan karier (dan banyak hal lainnya), kita sering terjebak dengan terlalu banyaknya pilihan dari luar yang pada akhirnya menutup intuisi yang datang dari dalam diri. “Yang bener yang mana sih?” Setelah nonton the social dilemma (Netflix), jadi teringat diskusi di dalam kelas Marketing communication saat kuliah. Semakin kesini kita kayak terjebak di dalam paradox of choice. Kita pikir, dengan banyak pilihan yang ada, kita bebas memilih dan lebih bahagia. Tapi kenyataannya, kita malah seringkali overwhelmed dan pada akhirnya memilih sesuatu berdasarkan yang orang lain pilih. Familiar? Jadi, “Yang bener yang mana sih?” Kebenaran pada akhirnya menjadi blur karena yang benar versi kita adalah informasi yang yang paling sering muncul di timeline kita. Informasi yang kita sukai. Suka belum tentu benar, tapi karena itu yang dilihat setiap hari, pada akhirnya itulah yang menjadi kebenaran dalam versi kita. Orang lain? Tergantung yang dimaksud orang lain ini siapa. Karena toh kita mengikuti orang-orang yang juga kita sukai aja 😆 lagi-lagi terjebak dalam paradox. Paradox of apa ya ini enaknya namanya? As I enter into a new, exciting direction for 2020, I need to exit 2019 with speaking my truth about DimepieceLA. I‘ve felt the need to share with u guys that I never wanted to halt the brand, I actually had plans for it that I was really excited about. I wasn’t able to continue without legalities placed, and couldn’t continue operating the brand under what I believe to be unfair circumstances. I love this brand, it was my baby since the age of 21, and I LOVE our supporters; so in many ways at first, I felt that my life was being forcefully redirected and was not able to choose my end-date with Dimepiece due to things out of my control. I can’t begin to convey this story in the amount of characters allotted here, but what I can amount it all to is this: thank you. Over the course of 12 yrs, we started in a bedroom and went on to make hundreds of thousands of garments, 7 HQ’s, 3 warehouses, over 100 interns, held international trademarks by the age of 25, had the largest streetwear company to exist at the time want to acquire us, and were in all of the mags I read as a teen; all of this independently, no investors. I say this not to boast, but to share the triumphs of our story from humble beginnings and leave young women with the message that you truly CAN start with a vision and create a life you couldn’t imagine, as long as you remain adamant, trust the process and follow it with focused application. These were all positive milestones, but I’ve come to realize it was never about that: It was about the girl waiting in line to spend her last $32 at our pop-up shop. It was about the girl that used our statement tees as a form of communication to her peers because she wasn’t yet comfortable to speak her truth. It was about the guy who took a risk and switched his major to the arts after reading our story. It was the hundreds of people interviewed that wanted to be apart of our vision. That will always be the foundation of Dimepiece; I want to truly THANK EVERY PERSON that has been apart of this era. When I got home that day, I found out that its also commonly known as a Kris plant (my names Krissy!) and it originates from the Philippines (so do I!). We both also thrive in temperatures between 70-85 degrees. Ha, never thought Id introduce myself this way but here I am. 🌿 I adore this plant so much -- I got it tattooed! 🌿 I spent most of my adolescence on the tropical island of Guam. 🏝🌺 🌿 Im an artist to the core. Ive been hinged to a camera since I was 5, double-majored in Graphic Design & Fine Arts, & has operated under an art alias for the last 11 years -- completely immersed in everything from jewelry & 3D design, acrylic/oil/digital painting & illustrations, branding, fashion/lifestyle photography, you name it. If Im not creating something, Im searching for the next thing to create. 🌿 Much of my professional career, however, is less visual & involves helping people achieve their highest potential in their own careers and in life in general - and ensuring that their experience is one that is most positive & meaningful to them. This fuels everything I do. 🌿 I have 2 cats but I get a lot of love from a squad of 4 pups in Vegas when Im in town. 🌿 One life goal is to visit all of the National Parks! Young Mars story (link in bio) is really the story of anyone whos ever worked in a restaurant, and anyone whos ever tried to make it in America as an immigrant. Some things may have changed since, but so much, still, has not. His story is that classic immigrant story, but also one that’s personal to me and to my family. He is the Gong-Gong, the grandfather, I never got to meet. But in the process of writing about him, and talking to my mom, aunt, and uncle about him and about his restaurants, I feel like I do, at least a little bit. I always thought I’m the failed version of asian - my high school report cards were often straight f’s, ditched school almost everyday, didn’t graduate college... The ideal of what is a good (asian) person set me back far. I spent too much time trying to live up the standard. Things changed after I decided to get a divorce from my first husband. All of my friends turned their backs on me because no asian would give their kids a broken family, “how selfish of you!” But look at where I’m at now? • Stereotype, prejudice, racism happen everyday in every race and culture. Not in an evil way, not like what we’ve seen from recent videos of “Karen”, but just the simplest misunderstanding and lack of knowledge about each other. My worldview is formed from parents, relatives, friends, tv, movies, music, textbooks... Growing up, black and brown people were always the bad guys in movies and the good cops were always white. In textbooks, white people did great big things while POC could never surpass them. Until after I got a divorce, became a single mom, needed extra income to survive and became a photographer THEN my worldview was expanded. Traveling around the US, I got to meet many different people. The ones that ended up helping me at unlikely places and time were always the ones that I grew up having the lack of knowledge and, of course, racism against. Late night, in the woods by a train station, standing next to 3 Hispanic taxi drivers, bag full of camera gear? Fear. “I’ll get robbed.” “They’ll rape me.” But we ended up discussing about what life means for an hour and they made sure I got on the right train. Little moments like that happened a lot when I traveled and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to learn. • These days, I’m seeing so much hate. I hope that more people can have the opportunities like I did (still do) to be able to open their eyes, their hearts and their minds. I guess one thing applies to all collectors, no matter what you collect: once you`ve started, you`re literally overrun by the collecting bug. I cant make out an exact date when it all began, but over 1.800 records have piled up over the years. These span a period from 1956 until today (thats what Discogs says) and the collection includes LPs, Maxi Singles, 10 and 7inches, picture and shaped vinyl, and Boxsets. Since I am not into a specific genre, I call it a potpourri of everything.
