George Polgreen Bridgetower: An African Prodigy in England 1789-1860. An outstanding violinist. Best known for his association with Ludwig van Beethoven, who wrote the piece Kreutzer Sonata just for him to play in 1803 (the full title was Sonata composed for the Mulatto). The composer praised him as “a very capable virtuoso who has a complete command of his instrument”. He was born in Poland to a West Indian father and German mother. He moved to London at an early age and was performing in theaters by the age of ten. The scope of Bridgetowers career in Europe becomes apparent when one sees what was written about him in late eighteenth-century English, French, and Austro-German newspapers, memoirs, and journals. By the age of twelve he was recognised by Londons musical intelligentsia as a respected member of its artistic community. By 1799, he performed in approximately fifty publicised concerts as a soloist or a principal musician. How did Bridgetower overcome some of the obvious racial barriers of his day? (1) He had an entreprenurial father who brought his son to the attention of the English aristocracy; (2) He was so skilful that he gained the unwavering financial support of that aristocracy; (3) For his day he had an above average education - a factor that often facilitated the rise up the social ladder in Georgian England; and (4) He won the support and friendship of George, Prince of Wales, later George IV of England. Bridgetower eventually fell out with Beethoven over the snub of a mutual female friend, he obviously deserves much more attention for the contributions he made to Classical music performance. - @blackmusichistory on Instagram

Dr. Ebenezer Johnson became Buffalo’s first mayor in 1832. He built Johnson’s Cottage on Delaware Avenue in 1834 on 25 acres of land. After his death in 1849, the property was sold to the Buffalo Female Academy around 1851 and served as their first building. The Buffalo Female Academy later changed its name to Buffalo Seminary. Johnson’s Cottage was demolished in 1919 (courtesy of Pat Connors). #cityspotlight #buffalo #365daysofhistory - @historypress on Instagram

The Rock” Segerfeldt himself 🥰 Love you forever, miss you always ❤️ - @segerfeldt on Instagram

My typewriter piece selected for the @tatecollective long list! Typewriter art is the act of drawing with letters and symbols- the foundation of our language and communication- to preserve an artform, machine and technique in a modern world which has forgotten it. A piece inspired by Sheba Chhachhi’s portrait of writer and publisher Urvashi Butalia as a part of the Seven Lives and a Dream series, is naturally suited to a technique born from writing. In our fight for gender equality we have used language as our tool. The typewriters include sections from monumental open letters written by women (Leyla Güven, Indira Jaising, Vasudha Dhagamwar) while the TV plays homage to the protests of the 1972 Mathura rape case. Our women, and other words throughout, are omitted with ? and – as they are still taboo, misunderstood and underrepresented. Six typewriters, a protest and The Dream of continuing to use language and its power to change the world. #typewriterart #typewriter #tate #openletter - @mitoshkaa on Instagram

An old #TBT newspaper clipping of Laurel Hill (aka: Randolph) Mansion. Built in 1767 by Rebecca Rawle, in 1828 it was purchased Dr. Philip Syng Physick, known as the Father of American Surgery. Its no surprise that a prominent doctor would see the advantage of having a country house to escape the repeated outbreaks of disease in colonial Philadelphia that puts our current crisis in perspective. Although decades had passed since the Yellow Fever scourge (that Dr. Physick himself survived), cholera broke out in the city in July 1832. And once again, a privileged class was able to socially distance at their summer homes, many that now comprise the Park Charms. Thankfully, the creation of Fairmount Park saved these houses from the ravages of progress. And fortunately, an early incarnation of the park saved many people from the ravages of cholera. Philadelphia’s death rates were one-quarter those in New York and one-twelfth of Montreal because of comparably clean and available water from the Fairmount Reservoir (Water Works) for drinking, bathing, and cleaning the streets. 💚🌳💚🌿💚🌳💚🌿💚 The park system now allows for more equatable access to the green space that remains a literal lifeline of physical and mental health.
