For as long as I’ve lived, I never believed this day would come. Its possibility more a fantasy than real life. But a few days ago, I got news on the identity of my biological grandfather. Using DNA testing and with the assistance of a seasoned genealogist, I now have a name and a face that has eluded my family for half a century. It was always my mother’s wish to find her father. I tried and failed so many times, leading to dead ends. I admit I had always felt indifferent to knowing who my grandfather was. It’s war, I thought. People vanish. So what. But now, with his face peering back at me, as if surfacing from a legend, as if Achilles had a photographic gaze you could return with your own, I am unmoored by a strange yet overpowering sense of pride, joy, and peace. Hello, Arceson Dolan Kellum. You don’t know me and yet I am here because of you. I’m sorry you died in 2005 and we never met—but I smile knowing I shared this earth with you for a little while—and so did your daughter. Now I know where I got my thick-ass eyebrows, my goofy smile, the freckles on my nose (we’re Irish!?) Born in 1947 to farmers in rural Arkansas, you left for war at 17, in that war brought an incredible girl into the world. There is so little about you in the records—looking for you reminds me how easily we are erased, how easily history exhales us back as air, won’t keep any of us long enough to be found. And yet, I found you, grandpa. I’m a writer now. I hope you’re proud of me. Irish, Vietnamese, Southern farmers, immigrants, I come from storytellers on all sides. How silly that I ever doubted my place here, making worlds with words. How silly that we live with wounds that precede our very lives, and that those wounds, in turn, should teach us new ways to heal. I will go south, sir. I will go south. Charles Williams Dec 31 1959 from QPA Queer Photo Archive of @jenniolsonsf For sure this is the best haircut of the week — the newspaper accounts of the time even pause to remark on this classic 1950s ducktail. This handsome hero went by the name Charles Williams while passing as a man: “Through about 25 states and at least four jails.” The newspaper stories of the time give us a sense of what Charles was navigating — reference is made to psychiatric help being suggested, followed by the seemingly forced reply, “I have no desire to be boy.” In one lengthy news story the parents are interviewed and although they are generally sympathetic they express the opinion that, “Barbara is a very mixed up girl… We want her to find herself.” Photos #1 & #2 are the original wire service image (the wire service 8 x 10 combines the two mug shots from the Golden, Colorado Jefferson County Jail), #3 is the November coverage of an initial arrest in which it sounds like Charles will return to their previous identity and then #4 reveals yet another arrest in December which leads us to suspect this is not just a passing phase. It’s not clear that this amazing person would have necessarily identified as butch. Tho we also don’t know they would have identified as trans in our contemporary understanding of that identity either. In the spirit of that wonderful uncertainty, here’s to opening up a space of common ground and shared experience in all our unique gender brilliance.
